Symeong

Last Updated: 04/15/2026

Name: Symeong

Classification: Humanoid/Beastoid (Simianoid)

Homeworld: Unknowm

Coloration: White, Yellow, Tan, and/or Brown

Biology: The Symeongs are humanoid, bipedal, ape-like beings with two arms, two legs, and one head. In fact, they are nearly completely identical to real-life chimpanzees, aside from their height (standing somewhere between 1.5 and 1.8 meters on average), pointed ears, and full sentience/sapience. They are generally pale tan or pink in coloration, although most of their skin (aside from their faces, feet, and five-fingered hands), was obscured by a thin layer of darker fur, usually brown. (Some Symeongs have been observed as almost completely hairless, aside from a mohawk-like growth of hair on their head, although it is unclear whether this was a shaven style or natural variation.) Though we’ve never seen their eyes, we know they had pinkish lips, wide noses, and the aforementioned pointed ears, which extended straight out from the sides of their heads. The Symeongs spoke an ape-like language, though they could also pronounce Galactic Basic Standard.

Society: Nearly nothing is known about the Symeongs. A handful were known to have been servants of the Sith, housed on Exegol by the time of galaxy’s “modern age,” though often treated as little more than slaves. It was possible for these Symeongs to achieve the rank of “Sith Alchemist,” although the details regarding their servitude and allegiances otherwise remains unclear. The species had been discovered and integrated into the galaxy by at least 4 ABY, although we do not know how long the Sith Eternal allied ones had been around and in-service. Symeongs generally went by single names with no surnames, such as Dathan or Albrekh.

Continuity: Symeongs are a species exclusive to Star Wars Canon, debuting in “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.”

Unexplored: The idea of an alien species in Canon allied with the Sith to some capacity (as well as the First/Final Order I suppose) is fairly unique, although the idea may have been a bit more fleshed out in drafts for TROS. It could still definitely be explored further in future media, so let’s pose a few questions that, if answered, would help us better understand the Symeongs as a collective species a bit better. What sort of creature did this species evolve from? Are they an advanced civilization or generally still pretty primitive as of the primary eras? What is their home world called, and what is like? Do their anatomical traits offer them any sort of unique advantages such as enhanced eyesight, hearing, or climbing? When were they first discovered, and by whom? Was it the Sith long ago, and if not, how did they come to be associated with the dark order, with some of their members being transported to the highly secretive Sith Temple of Exegol? And of course, it would be generally beneficial to explore our usual list of basic worldbuilding traits that I feature in the majority of my articles (i.e. society, galactic relations, politics, traditions, philosophies, religions, languages, diets, habits, so on and so forth)!

Additional Notes: I’ve been on record as saying I think this species is pretty boring and visually uninspired, and their current lack of lore does not help. If you really want a simian sentient in your story, there are so many other, more interesting (in my opinion) monkey-like aliens you could add (try the Iakaru or the Lurmen or heck, even the Ongidae). That said, this species does have potential to be explored, and I suppose that’s the only way they’ll actually get something that would make them interesting. A bit of a paradox I suppose, but if you, whether a fan or official creator, can craft one properly, they might just turn out to be both a bit more unique and memorable than what we’ve got to work with right now. It’s just going to take a little extra elbow grease (and possibly a slight artistic enhancement, like Calum Alexander Watt’s production illustration featured below!).

  1. I’ve sorta expanded on their lore. So basically, they’re from the farthest off moon of a gas giant called Alza. They share their name with the traditional name of their homeworld, though to the rest of the galaxy it’s known as Alza 36. They share their gas giant with many other moons, including the world of Canyon, home to, and I’m not even kidding (according to my cannon), legitimate catboys, and catgirls. like, the nyaa meme shit. Anyway, Alza 36 is a swampy moon, similar to Dagobah, with patches of more open peat bogs towards the equator. A myriad of dangerous animals inhabits it. The moon’s distance from everything else and thick atmosphere creates low-light conditions, which is the reason why Albrekh wears the goggles he does. They evolved poor eyesight, and he uses the cybernetic goggles to help him see. Many Symeongs are blacksmiths or ceramicists, their steady hands coming from their arboreal origin. The ears on a Symeong serve more purposes than just funneling in sound: they can sense changes in air pressure, temperature, small movements within the air, and even the static electricity in the air. Albrekh, like many traditional Symeong smiths, possesses the ability to tell the temperature of metal by the sound it makes when it’s struck. Introverted and generally eerie, the species prefer to live alone or with a romantic partner. Part of what makes them eerie is their feeding habits. They partially fill the role of vultures on their homeworld, eating dead carcasses (bone and all, hence the powerful chimp-like jaws) of the various large predators living in the swamps. They also eat plant roots and other tough, fibrous plants. They live primitively by choice, not wanting anything to do with the politics elsewhere, for the most part, building their huts out of clay and mud and building them alongside large trees. Despite their seemingly feral and primitive lifestyle, they’re relatively peaceful. They can speak basic, but many prefer not to due to their unsettling voices. Their native language, Sy’Mongoa, is made up of hoots, grunts, and rumbling sounds, and as such, they sound very raspy and frightening when speaking basic (listen to “Spoonful” by Howlin Wolf to get an idea of what they sound like). Their society is made up of large familial clans, usually building their huts around certain rivers or ponds, though they’re very spaced out because they don’t like company, even with other Symeongs. Albrekh was from a particularly famed clan of blacksmiths, and he was the rebellious, troublesome child. He eventually found his way to Exegol, fascinated by ancient Sith Alchemy despite a limited connection to the force, and while there he got himself cybernetic enhancements upon his eyes. A few Symeong were present in the clone wars, including one particularly feisty one from the same clan as Albrekh who assisted the Ryloth rebellion after the Republic left. The Symeongs are amongst the most flexible and nimble species in the galaxy, such as Ardennians, Togruta, Jackolan (my oc species), and Gungans.
