Name: Delphidian
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Humanoid (Near-Human)/Alternative
Homeworld: Delphidian Cluster
Coloration: Black or Dark Gray
Biology: Delphidians were a humanoid species bearing many of the same general traits as the average Human or Near-Human species, such as two arms, two legs, and one head, with a nearly identical average height, build, weight, and frame as well. That being said, they also had a very distinct, rigid, striated skin texture that was coarse to the touch and pitch black (or occasionally dark gray) in coloration. The aforementioned striation, specifically on their face, appeared to extend outward from their nose, circling the top of their head and meeting at an angled divot in the center of their brow and forehead. Due to originating on multiple worlds within the Delphidian Cluster, each colony had their own distinct features and slight variations in appearance, though we’ve yet to see the range of this variation.
Their evolutionary history remains distinctly unknown, and they had existed for centuries before being discovered by the Galactic Republic only seemingly a few hundred years before the Clone Wars at best. Some in-universe researchers assumed that they are an evolved descendant of long lost Human colonists, while others claim they were actually a bioengineered species, designed to be slaves or fill another designated, societal role. Delphidians primarily spoke a language also known as “Delphidian,” although they were perfectly capable of pronouncing Galactic Basic Standard as well. We do know the species had the capacity to be Force Sensitive.
Lore: Not a whole lot is known about Delphidian society, aside from the fact that they are spread out among distinct colonies across the “Delphidian Cluster,” a nebula within the Mid Rim Territories. Discovered seemingly sometime shortly to or during the High Republic era, they quickly took advantage of the technologies offered to them by the outside galaxy, gaining forms of interstellar travel and establishing trade routes between the different worlds within their cluster. Still, each colony seems to have remained mostly individual from one another, with varying degrees of societal, biological, political differences found on each.
Delphidians tended to keep to themselves as a whole, and apparently not many outside settlers have moved into the Delphidian Cluster as of the rise of the First Order, keeping their communities very traditional and unaware of what goes on out amongst the greater galaxy. Still, some have desired to leave the relative comfort of their small system and have traveled out among the stars, operating as smugglers, spice traders, merchants, and even pirates. Others, such as Jedi Master Jorinda Boffrey, were instead taken by the Jedi Order to live away from her family, as was the case with many species of the galaxy.
Delphidians are also very tight lipped about their own origin as a species, and either choose not to disclose details surrounding it, or simply do not know themselves, with current indications favoring the latter. Of course, Delphidians have the ability to speak Galactic Basic Standard, however, usually choose not to, as most rarely interact with people outside of their own kind. Their native language, Delphidian, was said to have variations (or possibly different accents) among each of their colonies/worlds, though technically remained the same language. Still, despite the ambiguity around their origins, they seemed otherwise friendly to outsiders, and were not the primary reason so few chose to visit their star nursery of origin.
Continuity: The Delphidians exist only within Star Wars Canon, being one of the first new species marketed alongside “Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens” at the very beginning of the Disney-overseen continuity.
Unexplored: Almost everything about the species remains unexplored, with that seemingly at least partially being the intention. We do not have a good example of how any of their colony’s societal and political structures work. We do not even know how many worlds exist within the Delphidian Cluster itself, only that it exists within the Mid Rim near the border of “Wild Space.” Their origins, obviously, have also been left unexplored, and the idea of them being a bioengineered race that popped up centuries ago with no present creator poses a lot of questions. We do not know how many of the colonies have actually developed or received space/hyperspace-capable technology, nor how many Delphidians have already left the cluster to pursue other occupations. Exploration into answers regarding the above concepts, as well as our usual list of general worldbuilding traits, would go a long way in helping this fascinating species further stand out (though I think most people would be okay with a couple of intentional lingering questions).
Additional Notes: I remember early on following their introduction, the Delphidians were regarded as one of the more Star Trek-like Star Wars aliens as far as their design went (at least according to some Trekkies online, a fandom I currently do not belong to). As stated above, they are considered near-Human in nature, and it is very possible that they are biologically similar enough to breed with baseline Humans if the theory that they’re Human descendants are correct, resulting in Human-Delphidian hybrids, which I would be very interested in seeing, although this has yet to be explored. With only a handful of instances having appeared in Canon presently, and most being nothing more than background characters, in addition to their rich and mysterious past, I find this species to be incredibly underutilized and filled with some amazing future storytelling potential! (Just another reason why Sidon Ithano remains such an interesting and cool character.)
