Name: Qubey
Classification: Humanoid/Beastoid (Rodentoid)/Diminutive
Homeworld: Caliban
Coloration: White, Gray, or Blue
Biology: The Qubey were short, sentient, mouse-like humanoid creatures hailing from the planet Caliban. They had many visible similarities to species like the Ewoks. Qubeys stood around a meter in height when fully grown, having rounded bodies and furry features with two-toed feet and three-fingered hands. They had gray skin that was only exposed around their appendages, noses, lips, and the insides of their ears. On top, they possessed a layer of fur that could be white, gray, or blue in coloration. Their large, glassy eyes were also similar to that of Ewoks, if not a bit larger. They also had mottled dark gray or blue spots on the fur of their cheeks, as well as sometimes possessing dark tufts of hair on the tops of their heads, and males additionally had the capacity to grow longer hair that resembled moustaches and beards, this hair usually being tan or white.
One of their most distinguishable traits were their large, circular ears, seemingly granting them enhanced hearing. They were also well adapted to cold weather environment, their fur protecting them from the frigid snowy landscapes of their homeworld. Being a primitive, isolated species, they exclusively spoke an unknown language consisting of long whoops, howls, and screams, being surprisingly loud for their small sizes. The species’ lifespans remained unclear, but it does seem the long hair on their faces and tops of their heads could turn white with age.
Lore: The Qubeys were a primitive people, not possessing advanced technology by the start of the Clone Wars, and instead relying on rudimentary tools, as well as handmade spears as weapons. They dwelled in small villages on their homeworld, the icy mountainous planet Caliban, surviving among the desolate wastes of the world. Because they had not developed space-fairing vessels, they could not be found anywhere else throughout the galaxy, and their population may have been on the smaller side given the small sizes of their individual communities. They had no prior contact with the galaxy until the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) occupied Caliban during the first year of the Clone Wars. The CIS quickly set up a prison camp on Caliban and had prisoners of war held there that they utilized as slave labor.
Seeing what they perceived as an injustice, one group of the local Qubeys eventually assisted the Galactic Republic forces detained on the planet, ambushing the Separatist droids sentries and helping both the Clones and Jedi in their combat against them. The Separatists forces were promptly driven off of the homeworld, and while the Qubeys didn’t officially join the Galactic Republic following this encounter, it does seem that they formed their first outside relationships and could be counted on as allies of the Republic in the future (unfortunately a Republic which would collapse and be reformed into the Galactic Empire within three years of this event). This was the last time we would hear of the species, and it is assumed they carried on with their isolated lives on Caliban, unaffected by future galactic events wars, but whose truly to say until more tales involving them come to be.
Continuity: The Qubeys only exist within the current Star Wars Canon, being released in a 2020 The Clone Wars-adjacent comic book issue.
Unexplored: Because this species was rather isolated and shows no signs of integrating themselves into the greater galaxy anytime soon, it would be very difficult to explore their relationships with other species or factions outside of what we’ve observed. Instead, the best things to explore would probably just be their culture and traditions. What sort of non-sentient animal might they have evolved from? How recently did they gain sentience/sapience? Exactly how advanced are they based off of their present languages and communication methods, tools and weaponry, villages and architecture, or even complex ethics? Are they superstitious, religious, collectively traditional, or does each group, clan, or tribe have completely different practices? Do groups or villages ever interact with each other (friendly or otherwise), and what do they generally think of offworlders?
Had they actually ever seen any non-Qubey before the Separatist invasion? Did any ever get to leave Caliban after their first encounter with the Republic? Did the Empire ever visit the planet, and what would have happened if they did? In fact, had other tribes been visited by explorers prior to that one particular group’s relatively minor involvement in the Clone Wars? Lastly, is it possible that they are somehow related to the Ewoks (despite being so far removed), or did they just happen to coincidentally develop into incredibly similar species, possibly as a result of convergent evolution? I’d love to get a bit more on this species, the connections to the Ewoks just seem to be too precise to be a coincidence, but I’d even just take further depictions in different art styles and mediums!
Additional Notes: As I’ve mentioned multiple times already, their similarities in appearance, dress, and background are uncannily like the Ewoks, just a “snow regional variant.” In the original version of this article I’d compared them to the Pooba, the species Nubs from Young Jedi Adventures is, but having seen the adult version of the species since then, I now retract that comparison. I kind of wish for this species as a whole to be explored further in the future, not necessarily in-depth, but maybe just in passing during the Galactic Civil War or Resistance eras. I think it’s a fun idea and they definitely seem like an almost “cuter” version of our creepy (according to some) little Endorian friends. Whether you consider them derivative, discount, superior, or just plain uniquely fun, it’s hard not to find joy in a species design like this. It’s just so very… Star Warsy!
