Name: Tefaun
Classification: Humanoid/Alternative
Homeworld: Tefau
Coloration: Grayish-Blue
Biology: The Tefaun were a humanoid sentient species with two arms and two legs, possessing the same general height, weight, build, and frame as the average Human, though also displaying mottled, wrinkled gray skin while seeming to lack any visible hair. They had slightly lumpy throats, with a subtly elongated neck and tall, skinny craniums, the sides of their heads almost flush with said necks. They possessed small mouths with sunken lips, as well as creases seemingly running from the sides of their mouths both across their cheeks as well as down the sides of their chins. They also sported large, vertical, exposed nostrils in the middle of their faces, lacking a traditional nose structure, while their eyes bulged from their head, though were still covered in large eyelids, giving them a perpetually squinted appearance. It is very likely the species had a keen sense of smell, while also potentially having poor eyesight in contrast, though this remains unconfirmed.
Lore: The Tefau were a people hailing from Tefau, a world found within the Tefau System, located within the infamous section of the Mid Rim known as “The Slice.” Little is known about this species as very few members of the species were ever observed among the greater galaxy. In fact, only two were ever introduced (as of the initial writing of this article), one briefly becoming the owner of the famous space station known as “The Wheel” and having dealings with the InterGalactic Banking Clan, while the other was a recruiter for the Rebel Alliance. Outside of these instances, nearly nothing is known of this species, so its hard to determine any sort of generalizations from these two pretty different individuals. We can at least say they had been discovered sometime prior to the fall of the Galactic Republic, and with the Slice being a hotspot for early exploration and colonization within the galaxy, first contact may have happened much, much earlier.
Continuity: The Tefaun fall into a relatively interesting category within the Star Wars continuities, being initially designed for “Episode VI: Return of the Jedi” as one of the many aliens among Jabba the Hutt’s Palace, even going to far as to receive a maquette, though they would not actually make it into the final film. And, while that could have been where their story ended, they were actually technically recycled in a few sources, first via photos of their maquette being used “Star Wars Chronicles,” and then again in the “Star Wars Customizable Card Game,” establishing them as a true species within the Star Wars Legends continuity, though primarily through sources of “lesser canon,” making their true existence a bit shaky, especially since they never recurred outside of these. Still, I would consider them canonical to the EU, though they have still not yet appeared or been referenced within the current Star Wars Canon, the closest we’ve gotten is the canonization of the Tefau System.
Unexplored: In this case, I do have to same most of the Tefau’s lore is unexplored, even regarding assumptions made above such as the degrees of their various senses, when they may have first been discovered, and even if Tefau is their actual homeworld (but for that last one, in my opinion, there are more than enough hints to make that claim firmly). That said, we still have to wonder about other worldbuilding traits as well, such as when they first developed sentience and what sort of creature they evolved from, what sort of feats of technologies or philosophies or exports did they achieve, and how do they fit into the greater galactic landscape. Did they have any strong enemies, allies, rivalries, related species, etc., and were they ever members of the Galactic Republic, did they find themselves allied with the CIS, and were they collectively big supporters of the Rebel Alliance (and even New Republic and/or Resistance)? These are just a few of the many questions that could be asked about this species that, if answered, could help cement them as a much more interesting and memorable species among Star Wars’ ever growing collective.
Additional Notes: Personally, I’ve always found this one fascinating, something about that trading card their maquette was featured on, which I believe I possessed as a child, stood out as being almost uncanny, as it appears to be something taken from an OT film despite never actually existing. This was one of a number of species that sent me down rabbit holes that made me interested in Star Wars aliens to begin with! There are some neat BTS stories regarding them (and some of the other RotJ maquette species), and I’m really anticipating their Canon debut. I’ll make sure to come back and update this article with any possible updates when it happens, but for now, we still have some fun tidbits and a neat image to work with, just in case you’re interested in including a member of this species in your next work, whatever that may be!
