Qubey

Name: Qubey

Humanoid: No

Classification: Rodent/Dwarf

Homeworld: Caliban

Coloration: White, Gray, or Blue

Biology: The Qubey were a short, sentient, mouse-like creature hailing from the planet Caliban. They had many visible similarities to species like the Ewoks and Pooba. Qubeys around a meter in height, having furry features with circular ears and three fingered hands, and possessing a similar body structure. Qubeys had much shorter fur and larger ears than the aforementioned species. Their large, glassy eyes were similar to that of Ewoks, although much more predominant areas on their face where their fur grew in particular patterns, manifesting as circular cheek spots, as well as moustache or beard-like growths. Their fur could be a white, gray, or blue, with their “facial hair” generally being a much lighter coloration than the rest of their bodies.

Qubey lifespans were fairly evident, with shorter hair on the tops of their heads when younger, and darker patterns or spots on their face, while older Qubeys hair began to turn white, and their eyes showed their age much more prominently. They were also well adapted to cold weather, their fur protecting them from the frigid environment of their homeworld. Lastly, being a primitive species, they exclusively spork their own language instead of adopting Galactic Basic, although said language currently does not have a name.

Lore: The Qubeys were a very primitive people, not having any advanced technology, and instead relying on spears as weapons. They dwelled in small villages on their homeworld, the ice planet Caliban. Because they had not developed space-fairing vessels, they could not be found anywhere else throughout the galaxy. They were also much too primitive to be a part of any galactic government, and had no prior interactions with the outside galaxy. That was until the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) occupied Caliban during the Clone Wars. The CIS set up a prison camp on Caliban and had prisoners of war held there that they utilized as slave labor.

One group of the local Qubeys eventually assisted the Republic forces detained on the planet, ambushing the Separatist droids and helping the Clones and Jedi in combat. The Separatists were driven off of the homeworld, and while the Qubeys didn’t officially join the Galactic Republic, they seemingly could be counted on as allies in the future. This was the last time we would hear of the species, and it is assumed they carried on with their isolated lives on Caliban, unaffected by future wars.

Legends/Canon: The Qubeys only exist within the current Canon, being released in a 2020 The Clone Wars-adjacent comic book.

Unexplored: Because the species was rather isolated and shows no signs of integrating themselves into the greater galaxy anytime soon, it would be very difficult to explore their relationships with other species or factions. Instead, the best things to explore would probably just be their culture and traditions. What sort of non-sentient animals might they have evolved from? How recently did they gain sentience/sapience? Exactly how advanced are they based off of their present languages and communication methods, tools and weaponry, villages and architecture, or even complex ethics? Are they superstitious, religious, collectively traditional, or does each group, clan, or tribe have completely different practices? Do groups or villages ever interact with each other (friendly or otherwise), and what do they generally think of offworlders?

Had they ever seen any non-Qubey before the Separatist invasion? Did any ever get to leave Caliban after their first encounter with the Republic? Did the Empire ever visit the planet, and what would have happened if they did? In fact, had other tribes been visited by explorers prior to that one particular group’s relatively minor involvement in the Clone Wars? Lastly, is it possible that they are somehow related to the Ewoks or Pooba (despite being so far removed), or did they just happen to coincidentally develop into incredibly similar species, possibly as a result of convergent evolution?

Additional Notes: As I’ve mentioned multiple times before, their similarities in appearance, dress, and background are uncannily like the Ewoks, just a “snow version.” They’re even more similar to the Poobas like Nubs from the Young Jedi Adventures animated series, who are technically the newest species out of these three. I kind of wish for this species as a whole to be explored further in the future, not necessarily in-depth, but maybe just in passing during the Galactic Civil War or Resistance eras. I think it’s a fun idea and they definitely seem like a “cuter” version of our little Endor friends, at least when looking at their original live action appearance. Whether you consider them derivative, discount, or just plain fun, it’s hard not to find joy in a species design like this. It’s just so very… Star Warsy!
