Biology: Ghulars were a humanoid sentient species observed within the Canon Star Wars universe. They possessed the same general frame, height, build, and weight as the average Human, even possessing a lot of the same bodily features such as the number of fingers. However, there were some clearly noticeable differences as well, including their pigmentation, which was always bright pink in coloration, their skin smooth and shiny.
Theirs heads were also vastly different, with segmented chins, four downward facing barbs extending from the bottoms of their cheeks, cheek ridges that gave way to four nostril holes (stacked two on two), lack of a proper nose, small mouths, large rounded ears, ridged foreheads and pronounced, highlighted brows, solid white eyes, and only a single mohawk-like strip of hair on their head that varied widely in color, appear in shades including but not limited to yellow, orange, red, and green. Ghulars were known for their peak physical strength and musculature. They also had the capacity to pronounce Galactic Basic, albeit with a broken speech pattern.
Lore: We know next to nothing about the Ghulars aside from the fact that a seeming majority of the species had been enslaved by the tyrannical Qhuloskians sometime prior to or during the early Galactic Civil War era. This was because the Ghulars were valued for their physical prowess and devotion, and may not have resisted much when initially subjugated given their restricted understanding of the galaxy. During this time of captivity, they were made to don special custom suits and worked in the many “Farium” mines on Qhulosk.
Ghulars seemed to have a limited understanding of their situation overall, not displaying the highest levels of baseline intelligence for a sentient species, but also aware enough to realize when they were in trouble. As the Qhuloskians began to be wiped out by the Galactic Empire, the Ghulars changed hands from one master to another, being kept as slaves by the Empire due to their already established experience mining Farium. By this point, the Ghular population seemed to be dwindling, and they wished for nothing more than freedom, which would come occasionally but not often, at least before the end of the war it would seem. During the conflict on Farium, the Ghluar did seem to take up arms against both warring oppressors, however, their efforts seemed mostly in vain.
Legends/Canon: The Ghulars are exclusive to Star Wars Canon.
Unexplored: There is quite the list of concepts that still need to be explored regarding the Ghulars. Because of how little we know, we should probably stick to establishing the basics for now. Learning more about things such as their homeworld (and it’s name), origins, history, evolutions, civilizations, architecture, culture, society, government and politics, philosophies, religions, traditions, habits and practices, exports and economy, aesthetic and manner of dress, languages, level of awareness, alliances and relationships, involvement in wars and other major galactic events, and whereabouts during established Star Wars eras would all be incredibly beneficial in further cementing this species within Canon. Getting some further illustrations or other looks at this species (as well as additional anatomical, physiological, or biological details) would also be fantastic!
Additional Notes: There’s nothing super noteworthy here at the moment, although I do really like the design of the Ghular’s head. They aren’t just your average near-Human, but also aren’t bizarre or overdesigned, which is pretty nice and refreshing. Since they are Canon I hope to see more of them soon, and learn a bit more about their history, perspectives, and how they arrived at the situation they currently found themselves in during the reign of the Empire!
