Akurian (Snow Demon)

Last Updated: 09/06/2025

Name: Akurian or Snow Demons

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Beastite (Simian)

Homeworld: Akuria II

Coloration: White and Tan

Biology: This little known yeti-like species occasionally appeared within the Star Wars universe, bearing a number of similarities to other large, beastly races such as the Wookiees. The Akurians were incredibly muscular, sporting long limbs and standing anywhere from 2.2 to 2.6 meters in height. Much of their body was covered in a thick layer of insulating fur, although their faces were actually hairless. Akurians stood with a slouched posture, and had large tufts of hair on their shoulders, chest, and around their waist. They were also known for their massive hands and incredible grip strength.

Their faces were flat and smooth, being pink or tan in coloration, and featuring very pronounced brows. They had small, black, upturned noses, with a crease running down the middle of their face and leading to their low hanging mouths. These mouths bore large teeth, and were flanked by a large upper lip and a handful of thick whiskers, as well as a long beard underneath. They also had a naturally growing mohawk-like crest of hair that extended from their forehead to the back of their neck. Akurians also had small, beady eyes surrounded by large eyelids. And while they could understand it, they were incapable of pronouncing Galactic Basic, instead communicating via grunts and yells.

Lore: When first discovered (presumably during or shortly prior to the rise of the Empire), the Akurians were still a rather primitive race. They had developed very basic tools and weapons, constructed rudimentary homes, and were starting to form their own language. They also wore specialized belts, although they required no other clothing. Akurians spent much of their time hunting or building, and were well adapted to quickly traverse their frigid homeworld of Akuria II. There were also very few creatures that they weren’t able to overcome, potentially making them Akuria II’s apex predator.

During the Galactic Civil War, the Empire established a presence on Akuria II, driving the Akurians into hiding. They also refused to call them by their name and acknowledge their right to the planet, instead coining them as “Snow Stompers” or more derogatorily, the “Snow Demons.” The Imperials were scared of the Akurians, but didn’t see them as much of a threat as they were not united, nor did they have the tools to pose any real threat to the established Garrison. The Akurians hated the Empire as well as being referred to as “Demons,” and attempted to Rebel but rarely made any sort of impact.

Eventually the Rebel Alliance arrived to rid the world of the Empire, and the Akurians quickly allied themselves with them. Under the leadership of the powerful Akurian “Fafnir,” these Snow Stompers would gather together and attack the Empire in force, eventually driving the survivors from the world altogether. Out of respect, the Rebellion also retreated from Akuria II to leave the Akurians in peace. Although the Akurians still considered their newfound friends to be allies, and remained on friendly terms with them going forward. With new technologies, the Akurians would also begin to progress very fast as a species, although to what extent we never did learn.

Continuity: The Akurians are currently exclusive to early media in Star Wars Legends.

Unexplored: While we saw pretty much everything there is to see regarding the Akurians during the Galactic Civil War, there is a lot left up in the air regarding their past and future. When did they first gain sentience? What level of technical progression did they reach prior to their occupation? Had they ever been introduced to the outside galaxy prior to that point? And what came after? Did they become members of the New Republic? Were they eternally left in peace? How quickly did they advance following their occupation? And what were their overall perspectives and understandings regarding the whole thing? (That is, of course, if any of their story is actually ever adapted into Canon. They could wind up being an entirely blank slate.)

Additional Notes: There’s a fun little concept here, but in the grand scheme of things, there aren’t many unique ideas, plots, or designs here. They may have done it first, but other pieces of media/species have done it better. This just means it’s time to modernize these “Snow Stompers” and give them new life in Canon. With a little tweaking, their design could become quickly memorable, with some tragic but inspiring lore to boot!
