Aeosian

Name: Aeosian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Amphibious

Homeworld: Aeos Prime

Coloration: Green and Blue

Biology: The Aeosians were a tall, slender species who were aquatic in nature. On average they stood approximately 1.8 to 2 meters in height, although they were very light and thin, most of their body consisting of pure muscle. This is due in part to their amphibious lifestyle, with the Aeosians being able to breathe both underwater and on land. Both their arms and legs were elongated, their hands possessing four fingers, and their feet having four, long webbed toes that were flipper-like in shape. This allowed the Aeosians to be very streamlined and proficient swimmers. Their coloration also allowed them to blend in with the water of their homeworld, usually a gradient of blues and greens, with the lightest green on their stomach and chest, and the darkest blue being located on their fins.

On their bodies, the Aeosians had a number of distinct fins. There is a fin on the side of each of their ankles, the back of each of their calves, one on the top of their head that was considered to be their “dorsal fin.”. They also had short fin-like ridges running from their mouth up and along their cheeks, and two sets of similar fins on each side of their neck, potentially covering a set of gills. On top of their tall necks was an elongated head which feature the aforementioned dorsal and cheek fins, small noses and mouths with an overlapping upper lip, large eyes with purple irises, earless aural cavities on the side, and four small barbs on their chins. While male Aeosians possessed larger frames, both males and females had large chest/breast areas and incredibly slender torsos. Aeosians also had the capacity to pronounce Basic, although they also had a native tongue consisting of clicking and “bubbling” noises.

Lore: Hailing from the ocean world of Aeos, also known by many as Aeos Prime, the Aeosians were a race of noble warriors. Arranged into small tribes scattered across Aeos Prime, they were very few in numbers as far as sentient species were usually concerned. Given Aeos Prime’s uncharted nature, they also very rarely encountered offworlders and never left their planet as they had no access to space faring vessels, nor the desire to leave in the first place. The Aeosians had, however, been granted access to some advanced technologies in the past, and while they still lived rather primitive, tribal lifestyles, advanced technologies such as custom vibro-spears and energy field generators had also been integrated into their way of life.

The Aeosians had a strong connection to the sea, and gathered their food there, with a diet seemingly consisting primarily of fish. They also tamed the local winged Krakavora which they used as quick mounts both below and above the surface of Aeos Prime’s oceans. They had developed a very ornate style of dress, with elaborate golden headdresses, jewelry, weaponry, and suits of armor. They wore very minimal clothing, which assisted their ability to swim, however, it is worth noting that both male and female Aeosians wore thick breastplates which exposed their midriffs. Aeosians may have also had a strong connection to the Force, as they had village “healers” who were apparently quite proficient at their jobs.

While hostile towards offworlders, the Aeosians were visited by the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War, who had traveled to the world to establish a base as they thought it was uninhabited. It is believed that the Empire may have invaded not long after, potentially resulting in large-scale Aeosian suffering. Much later on the Aeosians were attacked by the First Order, leaving many wounded from at least one clan wounded and without a healer, turning them against all outsiders. When the Resistance arrived, they were met with hesitancy and hostility, although after speaking with the current matriarchal queen, an alliance was even struck, medicines were traded for safe passage, and tensions were softened. Ultimately, the Aeosians would receive aid from the Resistance in return for letting them use Aeos Prime as a temporary staging area, and the two groups would remain mutual allies until the end of the war.

Legends/Canon: The Aeosians are exclusive to Star Wars Canon, and were created specifically for the Canon animated series “Resistance.” Interestingly, they do have a Legends counterpart known as the “Mere” who share a lot of visible and lore similarities and were, in fact, designed by the same person, Amy Beth Christenson. She has stated that she created the Aeosians to mirror the Mere from Legends, but they are not intended to be the same species, despite the Mere not yet making their way into Canon.

Unexplored: There’s both a lot to be explored with the Aeosians, as well as very little. Much of their life was spent in solitude, so we know they don’t have any other ties to galactic factions and they don’t export anything offworld. However, it would still be nice to know who visited them in the past and granted them access to the basis for the advanced tech that they have in the present? How many tribes are spread across Aeos Prime, and are they all ruled by one queen or do they have different monarchies? How much of the planet was affected by the Galactic Civil War, and what was their first meeting with the Rebellion like? If the Mere are ever made Canon, what connection or relationship would they have with the Aeosians? And finally, what other unique traditions, customs, religions, or beliefs do they hold that set them apart from other similar species?

Additional Notes: Being one of the few original creatures created for Star Wars Resistance, and potentially the only one that got extensive exploration as a species, the Aeosians are in a unique spot, and I think they mostly rise to the occasion. To me, their design is almost more Mass Effect-ish than Star Wars-y, but I feel like that’s probably just due to the cell shaded animation style. Still, I do like them and really dig their background/connection to the Mere. Hope to see more of them soon!
