Name: Wroonian
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Near-Human
Homeworld: Wroona
Coloration: Blue or Gray
Biology: The Wroonians were a species said to be nearly identical to that of Humans, with only a handful of surface level differences. They shared the same bodily build and anatomy, but were slightly shorter than Humans on average, often maxing out at around 1.6 meters. Their pigmentation was varying shades of light blue, with even components like their fingernails and lips being blue. Some also had sweeping, very distinct, much darker blue lines and patterns scattered across their body.
While they had black pupils, Wroonians also had red or yellow irises. It was most common for them to have pitch-black hair with a noticeable sheen. The Wroonians had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic, although they also had a native tongue officially known as “Wroonian.” Their lifespan was said to be approximately the same as the average Human. They are also most closely related to Pantorans, and it is believed that they can produce children with both Pantorans as well as Humans (and potentially other compatible Humanoid species).
Lore: The Wroonians had a galactic reputation for being rich and carefree. Their homeworld of Wroona was known for its glistening oceans and luxurious beaches, and the Wroonians maintained a prosperous economy throughout many of the different galactic eras. There were many iconic Wroonian socialites, and they placed a large emphasis on simply enjoying life and having fun. While the Wroonians did develop starships, they primarily focused their efforts into creating water-faring vessels like battleships, boasting a rather powerful aquatic naval force. Their largest forms of planetary income, however, came from the tourism industry and the export of various luxury goods.
While not officially a part of an organized religion, the Wroonians were known for being a very spiritual species. They believed in having a strong connection with nature, and more specifically the sea. They also placed a heavy priority on traveling and seeing as much of the galaxy as you could before death. They believed in wearing comfortable clothing, however, they were often still seen in the most luxurious and ornate gowns and suits. Tattoos were also popular among the Wroonians. Due to how often they traveled, Wroonians were known for being great storytellers, often preaching of their various escapades and never afraid to brag on themselves.
The Wroonians were long time members of the Galactic Republic, and held an influential seat on the Senate. This lasted all the way up until the Clone Wars, where they were usurped by Separatist space, although they remained closely allied with the Republic. They also spread out in large groups during this time, developing colonies on different worlds such as Saleucami. In turn, many Republic species such as Rodian, Twi’leks, and of course, Humans, would develop small fulltime colonies on Wroona, separate from the usual tourists. The Wroonians were generally known as welcoming and hospitable, so no real issue arose from this “counter-colonization.”
When the Empire Rose to power, they maintained a seat on the Imperial Senate, and they were still considered their allies on paper. However, aside from very few of the Wroonian elite, most of the planet’s population were in direct, often public opposition to the Empire. The Wroonian Navy was fully prepared to combat the Empire and remove Palpatine from power for his traitorous actions, however a ful Imperial occupation was enacted before this could happen, and an Imperial Garrison was established on the world due to its strategically advantageous location. The new Imperial Governor also established the Imperial shipyard known as the “Wroona Stardock.” While many Wroonians would quickly join the Rebellion, Wroona was not officially liberated until a Rebel raid in 2 ABY.
Continuity: The Wroonians are Canon in name, however, they’ve always held a rather bizarre place in Star Wars continuity. Originally, George Lucas’ very own character Baron Papanoida from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was a Wroonian Senator, an inclusion which would normally mean a species was instantly Canon. However, prior to Disney’s acquisition of Star Wars during an episode of The Clone Wars animated series, it was retconned that Papanoida and a handful of other known Wroonians were actually a new species known as the Pantorans. This didn’t mean the Wroonians were up and erased, and it was actually said that they were simply similar to the Pantorans in-universe. However, all the lore above is still relegated to Legends, the name “Wroonian” only canonized due to a little known but discontinued Canon Magazine known as “Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon,” and and then referenced but still not explored in the novel “Shadow of the Sith.”
The character Phaedra who first appeared in the 2022 “Han Solo & Chewbacca” comic run was later identified in the Canon Comprehensive Encyclopedia as a Wroonian, however, in the 2025 “Jedi Knights” comic run that came out less than a year after this bit of lore was established, this is contradicted by Qui-Gon Jinn referring to the character as possibly being a Quaraxian instead… the comic’s author confirmed that this was not just speculation but intended to be fact, and that members of the Story Group had not gone against this revelation, meaning the Wroonian connection was seemingly quickly retconned or was more likely simply a mistaken identification from the encyclopedia, sadly a somewhat persisting error from an otherwise great piece of supplementary Star Wars media, as we see with other characters like Kirak Infil’a and Cyrus Vuundir being falsely ID’d as Humans.
Unexplored: As you’ve probably seen if you’ve read any number of my other species entries, with a species like this, canonically they are fully open for any sort of exploration as we know nothing about them aside from their name and the name of their homeworld. However, given the fact that they have a lot of unique established lore already created, bits and pieces are often pulled from Legends and used in Canon. So, for the sake of this section, let’s base our questions off of what we’ve already been told, something that may definitely help if you’re creating a Wroonian character for a fan work/fiction.
The questions include, but are not limited to: What is the exact relation between the Wroonians and the Pantorans? Did one develop from the other, and were they capable of reproducing together (as well as with Humans)? If Baron Papanoida was not representing the Wroonians in the Senate, then who was their Senator during the Clone Wars? What did they think of being a part of the Republic as a whole? What sort of luxury products did they primarily export? And how many tourists usually visited Wroona at any given time? Did the planet maintain its natural beauty, and what exactly did it look like (as we don’t have any real illustrations)?
What was the ratio of Wroonians who were in favor of the Galactic Empire compared to those opposed? What was the size of their navy, and what were their ships like? Was the navy developed only to defend the planet, or were their warring nations on Wroona, each with their own distinct naval force? How many Wroonians actually joined up with the Rebellion? How long did the Wroona Stardock remain in operation? And what was the Battle of Roona like, how long did it last, and who all was involved? Did the Wroonians become a part of the New Republic, and what was the future of their species like? These are a lot of questions that, if answered, would help flesh out the Wroonians and set them even further apart from the Pantorans.
Additional Notes: While not the most visually striking species, their production backstory is quite unique (extremely reminiscent of the Rattataki becoming the Nightsisters/female Dathomirian Zabraks). They also have a fairly distinct backstory that I do hope is transferred faithfully over to Canon. Many people may not even know that the Wroonians are Canon due to the obscure nature of their initial reference, and I hope it is further acknowledged by Star Wars in the future, especially within a visual medium!
