Name: Alzarian

Humanoid: Yes/No

Classification: Reptilian/Alternative

Homeworld: Alzar

Coloration: Green or Yellow

Biology: The Alzarians were a race of odd looking reptilians that have been popping up across the Star Wars universe for quite some time. There were actually two different types of Alzarians, a fairly humanoid variant, and a much more egg-shaped group of individuals. All Alzarians seemed to be naturally greenish-yellow (often described as “pus-colored”) and covered in small scales. They were reptilian in nature, presumably being cold-blooded like many of their sentient reptile peers. They possessed four-fingered hands, disproportionately small feet, and stood approximately 1.6 to 1.8 meters in height. Both types of Alzarians also had wide lipless mouths, large red tongues, massive beady eyes, bushy black eyebrows, and generally rounded features. No Alzarian has been seen with visible nostril or aural cavities either, and in turn, no nose or ear-like structures.

The slimmer type of Alzarian generally had a Human-like build while still possessing the features listed above. Their heads were rounded to the point where they were shaped like a massive ball. The wider Alzarians took on an almost frog-like appearance, while their bodies were roughly shaped like an egg. Unlike their counterparts, they possessed no necks. However, this type of Alzarian sported both a set of large tusks extending from their lower jaw (at least upon reaching maturity) and two small horns on the top of their head. While not necessarily muscular, this type of Alzarian was much more resilient. It has not been confirmed whether this distinction was due to the Alzarians possessing two separate subspecies, or they simply had vastly different body types that also affected the growth of horns and tusks.

Due to the size and shape of their mouths, Alzarians were an unnaturally loud species. Due to the arid climate of their homeworld, the Alzarians were also used to dealing with hot, dry environments and little food. Despite this, we know that they were capable of ingesting massive amounts of sustenance in single sittings. They were also proficient jumpers, lending credence to the theory that they originally evolved from a frog-like creature. We know that Alzarian young grew quite large rather quickly, although the species average lifespan was never revealed. They did have the capacity to pronounce Basic. And according to the ancient Sith, they were capable of being Force Sensitive and may have had a rather high natural Midi-chlorian count.

Lore: The world of Alzar was ruled by a planetary monarchy, with kings being given incredible power and jurisdiction, which would then be passed down to their first born son at the appropriate time. They were also a military state, with a rather large army, despite their somewhat lacking technologies, weapons, and armor. Despite this, they have been conquered over and over throughout the course of history. They learned to fight using intimidation tactics, but seldom was there anything they could do against their many opponents. Whenever possible, the Alzarians would seemingly attempt to remain as a rather isolationist species, although their greed and other desires often seemed to contradict this notion.

Alzar and the Alzarians were actually discovered by the fledgling Galactic Republic some 25,000 years before the Battle of Yavin. They were placed within “Republic Space” and under the Republic’s jurisdiction, although, from what we know they were never given a seat on the Republic Senate. Not currently able to manage all of their allied systems, the Republic actually pulled out Alzar System and subsequent Thanium Sector entirely, eventually losing all records of Alzar and it’s people. A few hundred to potentially a few thousand years later, Alzar was “discovered” for a second time. This second discovery brought with it hordes of Human colonizers attempting to flee from the then rampant Tionese War.

For a time, the Alzarians and their new Human neighbors lived in peace, the colonizers even submitting to the current monarchy and abiding by the planetary laws while also creating their own cities and settlements. For seemingly thousands of years this would be the standard on Alzar, at least until the Mandalorians invaded and killed most of the planet’s current Human inhabitants. Following their bloody occupation, the planet would be the site of a massive war between the Mandalorians and Darth Revan’s Empire. This Sith would eventually prove victorious, and the Alzarians would be subjected to their rule for the following years.

During the Jedi Civil War, the Alzarians would serve as pawns, and in some instances, slaves to their Sith oppressors. The Sith’s very own Dark Council would even observe the Alzarians to see if they could be useful to the Sith’s expansion, Darth Ravage deeming the species weak and utterly useless while Darth Nox saw value in the species as a whole and thought many great Sith could arise from among their ranks if they spent enough time being indoctrinated. Ultimately Nox would abandon any aspirations he had regarding the Alzarians in an attempt to prevent dissention between members of the already tenuous Dark Council, and the Alzarians would continue to exist stagnant on their homeworld.

Eventually the Republic would arrive to liberate the Alzarians during the New Sith Wars, finally freeing the Alzarians from the terrors that had suppressed them for the past age. This would prompt the Alzarians to officially join the Galactic Republic out of gratitude, and they would enter another age of relative prosperity, still kept under the watchful eye of the Republic who were wary of the Sith’s prior influence on Alzar. During this time, the Alzarians would come to be known by the rest of the galaxy, while not usually traveling off of their homeworld. This was believed to be due to habit and an innate fear of the other forces constantly lurking in the galaxy.

These fears would come to fruition at the start of the Clone Wars, when the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) would invade the Alzar System and occupy the Alzarians homeworld once again. While it is unclear if any battles ever took place here, they remained within Separatist space for the entire three-year span of the war. The Republic would never again return to liberate the Alzarians, a tyrannical Empire was now sitting in its place ready to quickly devour Alzar. After subjugating the weary Alzarians, they would maintain an iron grip on the Alzar System for the remainder of the Galactic Civil War, simultaneously oppressing the remaining denizens while also protecting them from other groups who desired to take advantage of the dwindling species.

The Alzarians would be involved with some shenanigans concerning R2-D2, C-3PO, the Ewoks, and the Rebel Alliance, but would not actually join the alliance or fight back against the Empire during this time. This did offer them an opportunity to start rebuilding, but that was short lived as directly following the collapse of the Galactic Empire, the Alzarians would once again be invaded, this time by the bloodthirsty Stenax people who wanted nothing more than to kill and destroy. The lives of many Alzarians would be lost during the widespread Stenax Massacre, threatening the stability of their entire world and inviting the Imperial Remnant to step in and offer “salvation.”

Under the rule of the greedy Warlord Zsinj, the Alzar would become the staging area for his own growing Empire. This would be to his benefit, as he could claim many of the stolen Imperial weapons, vehicles, and resources used by the Stenax during their invasion. The Alzarians, now on the brink of collapse, would lose almost all hope of ever gaining autonomy, even after the New Republic had swept in and once again liberated them from those who would seek to oppress them. Not wanting to deal with any more outside factions, the Alzarians would refuse to join the New Republic and instead remain neutral during the coming years.

As always, this sentiment was in vain and before they would have a chance to recover, the Yuuzhan Vong would invade the known galaxy and end the lives of even more Alzarians, separating them from the rest of the galaxy and ensuring no help would come any time soon. From what we know, the Alzarians were not completely conquered during this time, putting up a surprising final stand against these scary new enemies. However, in the end, it was for naught, as the now broken and spent species would quickly be usurped by Darth Krayt’s New Galactic Empire. Their final known status in the Star Wars Legends timeline being nothing more than the husk of a once proud species, dwelling under the oppressive rule of the new Sith Order.

As you can see, their extensive history in Star Wars Legends was full of tragedy, however their Canon story has the potential to be much different. We know they were an identified species by the time of the High Republic, but aside from that, not much else has been revealed about their lore so far. One Alzarian was a member of the Nihil, meaning they did individually ally themselves with outside factions, something that we didn’t see during Star Wars Legends.

Continuity: Existing for quite some time in Star Wars Legends, the Alzarians were finally added to Canon thanks to novels within The High Republic multimedia initiative!

Unexplored: In Legends, I think they already have the Alzarians lore more or less pretty thought out. However, in Canon they are ripe for exploration. Their history will need to be changed or adjusted, as many of the events above are not or cannot be made Canon. That means exploring new events if their tragic backstory is to be maintained. Or just straight up giving them a new trajectory that isn’t quite as bleakly repetitive.

Was their homeworld still named Alzar, and was it ravaged by the Nihil and/or a member(s) of the Galactic Republic? Were the Alzarians still isolationists, or much more similar to the average spacefaring species? Where were they at technologically? And what were some details regarding their government, society, economy, customs, traditions, religions, diets, and other cultural practices which weren’t fleshed out very well in Legends? Finally, exploring them further artistically and updating their appearance (whether still illustrated or in live action) would be very beneficial to their identity within the current Star Wars Canon.

Additional Notes: Visually, I don’t think the Alzarians are all that much to behold. However, lore-wise, while doing research into this species, I was honestly kind of blown away with how tragic this seemingly almost one-off species truly was behind the scenes. To me, they almost feel like the reverse Swokes Swokes, unable to ever defend themselves and slowly losing both their hope and identity. I’m excited we got a bit of them in the High Republic, but while it has not yet really been referenced, I kind of don’t want to see that depressing identity go away, given its gravitas and relative uniqueness. Hopefully they’ll be handled well, and we’ll get a better look at what the Alzarians have to offer the future of the Star Wars universe!
