Glymphid

Last Updated: 12/4/2023

Name: Glymphid

Humanoid: No

Classification: Reptilian

Homeworld: Ploo II

Coloration: Gray, Blue, Green, Tan, & Yellow

Biology: The Glymphids were slender reptilian species that we know very little about. Their exact height is unconfirmed, but we know they stood somewhat shorter than the average adult human. They had long, thin bodies and usually had tan skin on their underbellies as well as darker green or blue colored back and appendages (although at least one was completely purple). In addition, they were also covered in mottled yellow spots, making them a rather colorful species. They had very short legs with three toed feet, but contrastingly long arms that dragged on the ground when hanging limp. Their large hands possessed five-fingered hands, with their fingertips doubling as suction cups. They also had two large “nodules” located in their lower stomach that were visible due to their thin frame, although the purpose of these was never defined.

There were upwards of four short, black spikes extended from either side of their torso. They also had a double-finned crest extending from the front of their neck. This crest could vary in size, but also possessed multiple small black points. Their neck and head were incredibly long, only widening to accommodate their large, red, reptilian eyes. Between these eyes were two long slits, running from there snout all the way to their brow. These openings could seemingly be widened or closed, and either served as their ear canals or a second set of nostrils. Their primary set of nostrils were located at the end of their snout, and many of their long, gnarled teeth protruded from the thin lips on their sides of their snout.

Lore: Nothing has ever really been revealed about the Glymphid across both Legends and Canon. They weren’t necessarily an uncivilized species, as they were in some capacity integrated into the greater galactic landscape and seemed to be fairly well adjusted. However, they were known for being irrationally violent and often sly, as well as rarely feeling the need to wear clothing.

Legends/Canon: The Glymphids are Canon, but did originate in pre-Canon material.

Unexplored: One of the first things that needs to be explored is the Glymphid’s biology. What variation of colors could they be, and was there a difference in color or other external anatomy between genders? Could they speak Basic with their oddly shaped mouths? What did they eat, and did they have a high metabolism? And what is the purpose of the nodules in their lower torso? Reproduction, digestion, additional sensory organs? There is a lot that could still be better explained.

As for their lore, society, and culture, there is a lot of free space to honestly take it in any direction. How advanced or primitive is their civilization on Ploo II? Do they have any unique or strange cultural norms, practices, traditions, or religions? Were they ever involved in any wars, civil or galactic? Did they take any political sides during any of the major eras? When did they first gain sentience and when were the first discovered? And are they well spread out and integrated throughout the galaxy, or have they been more standoffish and remained consolidated on their homeworld?

Additional Notes: I definitely think this is an underrated species in Star Wars, and I definitely hope to see more of them appear in the future! The inspirations from Gharial are definitely noticeable, and the design is just overall very memorable. They would make a great spy or trickster-like character in a Star Wars story, so please consider them for a role in your next Star Wars fan work! Spread their name and reputation (as goofy as their name and homeworld may sound).
