Humanoid: No
Classification: Humanoid/Reptiloid/Diminutive
Homeworld: Unknown
Coloration: Green or Yellow
Biology: Sugi were short, shriveled humanoid beings standing no more than a meter tall when fully grown. They possessed green or yellow skin that was mottled and wrinkled. They had two-toed feet, spindly legs, and long, thin arms with wrinkled, five-fingered hands. Their necks were disproportionately thick, they had a small but pronounced chin, a mouth with thin lips, and two enormous, bulbous, sunken in eyes that usually took on a pink or magenta hue, with a distinctive “pupil pattern” consisting of one small circle in the middle surrounded by six additional circles, all faint and almost given the appearance of compound eyes from afar. They also possessed one large ridge on the top of their head, and two curved ridges on the sides that looped back around their cranium, almost resembling large ears, though it appeared their actual aural cavities were small holes on the sides of their heads.
Most Sugi could not speak Galactic Basic Standard (although there were seemingly a few exceptions). Their eyes and lungs could also not handle the atmosphere of most planets, and so they were forced to wear special goggles and a breathing apparatus (which also seemingly connected to their ears), similar to species like the Kel Dor. Unlike the Kel Dor, however, the Sugi also outfitted themselves with large, bionic exoskeletons, giving them an almost insectoid “abdomen” as well as four large legs and a deadly stinger. This was done for mobility, as well as just to make the species come off as more intimidating. Because of this, many people, including the Galactic Empire, misclassified the Sugi as an insectoid race, although biologically they were not, much more closely resembling reptilians.
Lore: Little is known about the Sugi, who generally seemed to keep their personal lives to themselves, only talking business when encountered. As such, we do not currently know where they hailed from, and it seems the mystery an ambiguity surrounding them may have been as much an in-universe concept as an out-of-universe one. We do at least know that the Sugi had a reputation for being some of the galaxy’s greatest weapons/arms manufacturers and dealers. They were known for their high prices just as much as they were known for their corruption, though corruption that only benefitted themselves and their own kind, as they were also distinguished by their otherwise unbiased attitudes, never picking sides of conflicts when it came to clientele. Their economy seemed hinged on the sale of weaponry, which appears to be why so many outfitted themselves with such intimidating bionic paraphernalia. It was either a tactic to demonstrate their wares, or to pressure clients not to betray them, when underneath, they were all just little folks trying to do what they could to get by in the galaxy.
Continuity: The Sugi only exist in the current Star Wars Canon. They were set to air in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7 Utapau Kyler Crystal arc, however, after that arc was abandoned, they instead appeared in the novel Tarkin (and later Jedi: Battle Scars).
Unexplored: There’s actually a lot left open and unexplored here that could be incredibly interesting to see fleshed out someday. We don’t know how the species got into the arms race in the first place, how they acquired the resources and technology to construct such strange bionic suits alongside their wares, and whether they did so all on their own or had assistance from some outside factor or source. We also just haven’t seen them do a lot so far in Canon, although they have a fairly prominent role in the galaxy’s economical, or at least black market, landscape. This can be blamed on the appearance that would have made them much more prominent among the fanbase being scrapped, though it should not prevent them from continuing to reappear with their initial concepts recycled.
We know they’ve interacted with the likes of the Galactic Republic, the CIS, and the Empire at some point, but we don’t know who else they have talked to or where else they’ve been, which opens up a plethora of potential stories and settings. Did they ever pick a side in the war in the past that caused their businesses to falter? Were they ever attacked or looted by pirates or the Empire who wanted their goods without paying the price? What happened to them during the First Order-Resistance era or beyond? And what is their homeworld like, what was it called, where was it located, and what caused the species to evolve the way they did? What traditions might the species have had, did they have any sort of tech-based religions, capitalistic philosophies, centralized governments, populations that did not support the arms industry? These are just a few sample questions to kickstart further ideas as there’s so much here that has yet to be explored
Additional Notes: The Sugi have both a really cool design as well as an immense well of untapped potential. Its a real shame they never got the spotlight like was intended, I just know how the fandom treats armored/masked species like this, and this one goes a step above with the exo-suit, so they would have no doubt been adored. Glad to see they weren’t completely abandoned as a concept as mentioned in the “Continuity” section above, there are definitely cut species who have suffered worse fates. I do believe we’ll definitely get to see more of them in future Canon works, but in the meantime, I definitely recommend putting the Sugi into your next Star Wars fan project! I mean, who doesn’t need weapons in a Star Wars story, am I right?
