Moogan

Last Updated: 04/08/2026

Name: Moogan

Classification: Humanoid (Near-Human)/Reptiloid

Homeworld: Mooga

Coloration: Green

Biology: Moogans are tall and lanky humanoids with green, possibly scaly (or at least mottled) skin, elongated necks, faces with very prominent double cheek bones, and bald heads with large foreheads. They stand at least a head taller than an average, adult human, probably around or just over 2 meters in heigh, and their bodies are noticeably thin and lanky, lacking any visible hair. Their blood was distinctively green, while their eyes featured yellow irises, and they possessed sharp, almost vampiric canine teeth. They also had only four digits on each of their extremities, as well as knobbly knees and elbows. Like most similar species, they were capable of speaking Galactic Basic Standard. It is unclear what the species’ average baseline Midi-chlorian count was, but it seems they were somewhat clumsy due to their size.

Lore: We know that Moogan society and their economy mainly revolves around the production and sale of teas and tea leaves locally grown on their homeworld, the planet Mooga, found within the galaxy’s Mid Rim Territories. They also seemed had a natural tendency to be selfish and self-centered, usually more concerned with their own profit and wellbeing than the safety of others, Moogan or otherwise. Their species as a whole relied heavily on criminal indutries such as the spice market and smugglers, with Mooga was located incredibly close to the Pyke-owned Kessel, considered by some to be the spice capital of the galaxy. They were a rather wealthy species collectively, and enjoyed fine foods and especially fine clothing, often opting to wear head dresses, jewelry, robes, tunics, and sandals. They remained independent during the Clone Wars, although they had many unfortunate run-ins with the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order. They also seem to have some form of relationship with the Gotal species, usually either employing them as workers, or possibly owning them as slaves, though this has yet to be explained any further at the moment.

Continuity: For the moment, Moogan lore has remained consistent between Star Wars Legends and the current Canon, existing within both continuities thanks to the “The Clone Wars” animated series.

Unexplored: Because of their relatively short time featured in Star Wars media so far, there is definitely still a lot to be explored with this species. I think their anatomy and biology would be something especially fun to delve into deeper. Could they be shorter or even taller than what we’ve seen so far? What do female Moogans look like? What about their home planet of Mooga made them evolve way they did, and what sort of creature did they evolve from? Were there any other colors they could possibly be? Do they have any other traits commonly associated with reptilians such as cold blood, smelling through their nose, shedding body parts, etc.? There’s a whole lot of possibilities here.

The fandom also usually associates the way the Moogans dress and some of their established mannerisms to traditional depictions of ancient Egyptian culture. To develop their culture or society further in-universe, the “ancient Egyptians in space” route could be taken, which I feel would be equal parts unique and uninspired. Though I’m open to hearing any potential alternatives until if an when an actual, fleshed out Moogan population, preferably on Mooga, is showcased. Anyway, once the groundwork has been laid for what their culture, civilizations, society, politics, relationships, history, and even biology fully were and are, you can then begin truly crafting interesting characters based off of pre-existing species characterizations, quirks, experiences, etc. Mooga being so close to Kessel is definitely an idea that should be explored further as well, in case you dive more into their general lore in whatever project you might be working on!

Additional Notes: I really like this species as a whole, and have dived deeper into their planet and society in my own Star Wars fan novel series (part of which has been uploaded to the site), but since there’s no real Canon expansion for them at the moment outside of some brief appearances in Star Wars comics, you’re essentially free to take these guys whichever direction you desire, whether as a fan or official author. Make it fun, make it memorable, and make it intriguing! Potential abounds with these lanky, crooked, and seemingly lavished individuals who commonly dressed like stereotypical pharaohs!
