Name: Moogan
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Reptillian/Near-Human
Homeworld: Mooga
Coloration: Green
Biology: Moogans are tall and lanky humanoids with green, possibly scaly (or at least mottled) skin, elongated necks, faces with very prominent cheek bones, and bald heads with large foreheads. They stand at least a head taller than an average, adult human and their entire bodies are noticeably thin. It also doesn’t appear that they can gain much excess weight. Their blood was distinctively green, their eyes were yellow, and they had sharp, fang-like teeth. They also had only four fingers and four toes. Like most similar species, they were capable of speaking Basic.
Lore: We know that Moogan society and their economy mainly revolves around the production and sale of teas and tea leaves locally grown on Mooga. They also had a tendency to be corrupt and self centered, more concerned with their own profit than the safety of others. Their species as a whole relied heavily on the spice trade and smugglers, and Mooga was located incredibly close to Kessel. They were a rather rich species, and enjoyed fine foods and especially fine clothing, often opting to wear head dresses, jewelry, robes, tunics, and sandals that exposed their green, four-toed feet. They remained independent during the Clone Wars, although they had many unfortunate run-ins with the Republic and Jedi. They also seem to have some form of relationship with the Gotal species, usually either employing them as workers, or possibly owning them as slaves. This has yet to be explained any further.
Legends/Canon: For the moment, Moogan lore has remained consistent between Legends and the current Canon.
Unexplored: Because of their relatively short time featured on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, there is definitely still a lot to be explored with this species. I think their anatomy and biology would be something especially fun to delve into deeper. Could they be shorter or even taller than what we’ve seen so far? What do female Moogans look like? What about their home planet of Mooga made them evolve this way? Were there any other colors they could possibly be? There’s a whole lot of possibilities here.
People also usually associate the way they dress and their mannerisms to traditional depictions of Egyptian culture. To develop their culture or society, the “ancient Egyptians in space” route could be taken, which would be equally unique and uninspired. Anyway, once the groundwork has been laid for what their culture, civilizations, society, politics, relationships, history, and even biology fully were, you can then begin truly crafting an interesting character based off of pre-existing species characterization. Mooga being so close to Kessel is definitely an idea you’ll want to explore as well if you dive more into their general lore in whatever you might be working on.
Additional Notes: I really like this species as a whole, and have dived deeper into their planet and society in my own Star Wars fan novel series, but since there’s no real Canon expansion for them at the moment, you’re essentially free to take these guys whichever direction you desire, whether fan or official author. Make it fun, make it memorable, and make it intriguing! Potential abounds with these lanky, crooked, and seemingly lavished individuals!
