Segredo

Last Updated: 12/6/2023

Name: Segredo

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Beast (Feline)

Homeworld: Unknown

Coloration: Purple, Blue, Cream, and/or White

Biology: Segredo were small, purple or blue feline-esque people. They had three-toed paws, stifle knee joints, and four fingered hands. They stood slightly shorter than most humanoid beings, although that may just be from the angle their inverted knees were constantly bent. They had massive ears protruding seamlessly from their heads, and a distinctive furry chin. Their mouths and noses were rather small, but their eyes were large, angled upward from their nose at a 45 degree angle. Said eyes were blue, aside from their small black pupils. Unlike most feline species, they also sported a pair of thin, black antenna from the top of their head.

The Segredo’s main distinguishable features was the fact that they possessed immense, seemingly “psychic” or “magick” abilities. They, nor the Jedi, ever relate these powers specifically to the Force, so it is unclear if it is somehow linked to high midi-chlorian counts, or just a unique natural ability all of it’s own. This natural trait allows the Segredo to cloak themselves at will, blocking others around them from perceiving their existence. This power is so extreme that they can even project it onto other beings as well, making whole groups of people seemingly vanish. The duration and range of this ability has never seen a limit, so it is unclear just how strong or vast these powers may be.

Lore: Nearly nothing is known about the Segredo history or society. They existed long before many species, and usually used their cloaking abilities to keep their people a secret. Unfortunately, they couldn’t fully protect themselves in the end as they were an incredibly benevolent people and hated being selfish. Their willingness to help other species who were afraid or dying ultimately played a role in their downfall, and by the beginning of the Clone Wars, supposedly only a single Segredo remained. She too had seemingly died out by the time the Empire rose to power, quite possibly adding their people to the ever-growing list of extinct sentient species across the galaxy. However, given the fact that they can literally exist in an invisible state, it’s also very possible that this is just what they wanted to lead the galaxy to believe for the sake of their own survival.

Legends/Canon: Segredo only exist within the current Canon, and have made only two major appearances, one set during the Clone Wars and another set prior during the High Republic.

Unexplored: Quite literally everything in regards to this ancient and relatively powerful species remains unknown. They were definitely a secretive and close knit race, and it seems they were never many in numbers, possibly being more of a nomadic group than an entire planetary species, at least for some time. It is also unclear whether their strange and unique abilities are linked to midi-chlorians and the Force or not, but Jedi Grand Master Yoda seems to hint that it is not Force-related in any way.

As for their general society, culture, civilization, politics, or even planetary economy or influence, we still know next to nothing as well. What world did they hail from? When were they first discovered? Were they ever brought into the folds of the Republic? Why were they so concerned with the wellbeing of others, and did it have anything to do with how they might have always been treated by the outside galaxy? Who might have oppressed them, or sought them out for their unique “value?” Did they really go extinct, or was it a ruse to reset their hidden nature? And what was the greater species up to a as a whole during various major galactic events or eras? Exploring these questions, as well as the other various worldbuilding concepts we often discuss in these articles, will help truly bring this fascinating species to the forefront of the fandom’s awareness!

Additional Notes: I really enjoy how this feline species sets itself apart, both design-wise, as well as lore-wise. Their is still an air of mystery surrounding their very unique abilities, and the fact that this isn’t some obscure EU species makes them all the more fascinating. That being said, the recent edition of another Segredo kid named Drewen to the High Republic was really exciting! Their greenish, more bat-like appearance on the cover of “The Monster of Temple Peak #1” is a but confusing, and definitely mislead me into thinking we were going to see a brand new species at first, but the fact that they found a new way to utilize their invisibility powers is incredibly fun!
