Current or Previously Unidentified Species 1-50

SPECIES: Yokaa

DAY 1 UPDATES: After years, the species who started this all finally got identified in the 2024 Comprehensive Encyclopedia, revealed to be the “Yokaa,” potentially a backwards nod to Ka’lone’s only dialogue in “The Rise of Skywalker,” the word “Okay!”

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 2 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: Querm Rybet

DAY 3 UPDATES: Highly anticipated, the “frog people” species was finally, and interestingly, revealed to be members of the “Querm Rybet” in the 2024 Comprehensive Encyclopedia. This name is actually pretty fascinating, as the Rybet were one of the most well-known sentient frog species from the EU (right), so it’s possible this is simply some sort of subspecies, though the term “Querm” is also suspect, being similar to the species name, “Quermian,” a genetically engineered offshoot of the Xexto species (left) created by the notorious Arkanians, at least in Legends. So this begs the question, could the same be said for this instance as well? We still haven’t seen standard Rybet in Canon so we’re not sure just how similar their current iteration is in appearance to the originals, but I wonder why they would need a genetically engineered variant, potentially just an experiment done for fun? Definitely something to think about until we receive more concrete answers!

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 4 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 5 UPDATES: This species reappeared briefly in the background of an episode of Skeleton Crew, making them notable enough to allow me to make a Wookieepedia page for them: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Glowen_Faquidde! (The notability policy was later amended to allow for the creation of species pages for ANY live action alien, not just those who appeared two or more times.)

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 6 UPDATES: We’ve since located the original model, which gives us a slightly clearer look at the species!

Also created both the Canon (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Chon_Actrion%27s_species) and Legends (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Chon_Actrion%27s_species/Legends) Wook pages for this one.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 7 UPDATES: There’s still an ongoing dispute over whether the species, in fact, named the “Balnab” or not. It has been framed in a way where this seems to be true, but lore-wise, it still just doesn’t make sense, as only a handful of members of this species were stranded on the planet Balnab after a crash landing. This is why sites like Wookieepedia have been hesitant to solidify this, instead acting as if just this one group of castaways are the Balnab, and not the entire race overall, which I believe is wise until they’re further referenced in something else someday.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 8 UPDATES: Just noticed my lack of punctuation at the end of the post… anyway, they appeared once again in a couple episodes of Skeleton Crew, but no further information as it stands.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 9 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 10 UPDATES: The “Scrapjaw” species continues to make regular appearances across Star Wars media, even making their way into “The Mandalorian and Child” children’s picture book. With this level of prevalence, I still believe it’s only a matter of time until this species receives an official name/classification!

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 11 UPDATES: Didn’t create the Wookieepedia article for this species so I won’t link it here, but I was responsible for restoring it with notability updates via a couple of votes.

SPECIES: Sibettan

DAY 12 UPDATES: This is one I was honestly not expecting them to revisit again, however, in the 2024 Comprehensive Encyclopedia, Loo Re Anno was revealed to belong to a species known as the “Sibettans!”

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 13 UPDATES: Jake Lunt Davies said he believed Luke D. Fisher designed this species, however, I have yet to find any confirmation of this.

We also got a Topps card for a member of the species who briefly appeared in “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” although not much additional info was gleaned…

SPECIES: Thuggatoris

DAY 14 UPDATES: Interacted with the actor who wore this suit, who revealed he had nicknamed the character “Phal’afel” while on set (which is why it’s included here, despite not being the official name).

The Topps “Obi-Wan Kenobi” trading card collection “Creatures & Aliens” gave us a bit of new info about this character, most importantly, his actual name: Tredgar Volk!

And finally, in the 2024 Comprehensive Encyclopedia, all of the theories surrounding Volk possibly being an established species were put to rest when he was identified as belonging to an entirely new alien race, the “Thuggatoris!”

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 15 UPDATES: It is worth noting that their homeworld was stated to be “Sarrish” in Star Wars Legends, though that doesn’t give us many clues as to their official name in Canon, as the world has only been mentioned in passing canonically and has yet to be re-linked to this character/design… additionally, while the Legends Wookieepedia page for this species already existed, I was given the privilege of making the Canon one, found here: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Veedaaz_Awmetth%27s_species. (Also, there are claims this species was originally based on concept art for Palpatine, though I have yet to come across it yet.)

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 16 UPDATE: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 17 UPDATES: Interestingly, the species has reappeared in “Tales of Villainy: A Very Nihil Interlude,” a short comic from “Star Wars Adventures (2020) 14.” Across both appearances they were illustrated by
Nick Brokenshire, meaning as long as he continues to work on Star Wars comics, there’s an increased chance that they’ll eventually gain enough notability to be identified!

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 18 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 19 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 20 UPDATES: So, I do have to make a correction to make, although the tweet I made announcing this correction sparked some additional confusion, as well as a couple of answers. For starters, this species was NOT cut from The Rise of Skywalker, just the specific characters above. During the flashback scene where Ochi of Bestoon confronts Rey’s parents, two individuals belonging to this species can be seen in the background.

These two individuals have slightly tweaked costumes compared to the ones seen above but presumably utilize the same masks. Their names were Bosvarga and Cerensco, twins who were hired and later killed by Ochi. The individuals above are tentatively referred to as Ommo Twilto and Dered Karno, technically never making it into the Episode IX, although because these promo images made it into a Canon Dictionary and Encyclopedia, they are still considered their own separate characters. In fact, author Adam Christopher theorizes that they may have been intended to have appeared at the festival on Pasaana at the beginning of the film.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 21 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 22 UPDATES: Here’s the Wook article I made for this one: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Allium%27s_species.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 23 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 24 UPDATES: A pinkish member of this species appears in “Return of the Jedi – Lando #1,” one of many recurring species Easter Eggs in the crowd shots of this issue that is seemingly colored at random!

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 25 UPDATES: Later located a ton of additional Dryden Vos concepts from various artists which can be seen better in the Quoted tweet/thread, most coming from the very early stages of his inception.

Another member of this species, Naare, appears as a recurring character in “LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures.” I didn’t put the pieces together until much later, even though Pablo Hidalgo himself referenced it, so I did actually feature Naare in a separate post on Day 340, though I now consider them to be the same.

I plan on eventually creating a much longer thread regarding this species in the same vein as some of my other deep dives I do for prominent unidentified species every 25 days! Not sure when I’ll get around to it, but I would like to maintain the same level of informational quality that I try to uphold now, I just never expected to do so much research this early on into the series! (Additionally, this was another Wookieepedia article that I did not originally create but did manage to restore after it had been trash compacted due to notability policy changes, so feel free to check it out.)

SPECIES: Khamarill

DAY 26 UPDATES: In the 2024 Comprehensive Encyclopedia, this species was revealed to be the “Khamarill” from “Emkhamarill,” a species name that was actually predicted by Whiphid (aka Dr. Kevin) over on Alien Anthology! The species, planet, and language are all loose anagrams of Mark Hamill’s name, who voiced and I believe did the mocap for Dobbu Scay in “Episode VIII: The Last Jedi!”

They’ve also been described as being amphibious in nature, which I definitely wouldn’t have been able to tell just by looking at them?

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 27 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 28 UPDATES: A somewhat similar species appears in “War of the Bounty Hunters #1,” which I featured on Day 782, though they were created by a totally different author and illustrator, so I cannot confidently say the similarities are intentional.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 29 UPDATES: I didn’t have the resources I do now (over two years later) when making this post, so I didn’t get to read over the entire comic beforehand. That said, this species has pretty wildly varying appearances, so I’ll show the third member below. We also know their current “homeworld” is Yorn Skot, specifically the floating platforms surrounding it, though they were obviously colonists, so we still do not know where they originally hailed from.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 30 UPDATES: I spoke with Jake Lunt Davies who confirmed the first instance of the species seen in TROS was based, at least in part, on one of his designs, which he shared about on Instagram. Something interesting to note is that the costume departments almost always adapt JLD’s designs 1:1 into live action, so this seems like an odd case of excess changes. When asked if his design might have been merged with another from a separate artist, he said he wasn’t sure and couldn’t remember everything about the process, however, it was definitely possible that this could have been a case of a “double credit” or that Neal Scanlan and team may have made last minute adjustments to make the costume screen-ready in time for filming.

SPECIES: Idalowd

DAY 31 UPDATES: Located concept art that confirmed this species was designed by Ivan Manzella.

The 2024 Comprehensive Encyclopedia officially identified this species as the Idalowd, and gave us our best full-body look so far!

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 32 UPDATES: Going to try and collect additional images of this one eventually, it’s just a surprisingly hard issue to find free previews of on Google, which is often how I get my stuff (wish I had done it prior to the original post because now the screenshot is just excessively long compared to the others). Neat to think that this is one of the first unidentified species in Canon though!

SPECIE: (still unidentified)

DAY 33 UPDATES: Confirmed by Jake Lunt Davies (@JakeLuntDavies) in the comments to be one of his, as seen below:

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 34 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 35 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: Tarlafar

DAY 36 UPDATES: Character’s name has been revealed to be Wamoth, and their concept artist has been confirmed to be Ivan Manzella as seen below (left). We also got another high quality image recently (right) that is hyper-realistically eerie, but also gives us one of our better looks at the species so far! (I can’t seem to get the quality quite right on this page for the moment, but it’s still fairly clear on my end.)

And we finally got a name for the species! The day after they made their animated debut within The Bad Batch, the official Episode Guide on Starwars.com for TBB Season 3 “Identity Crisis” revealed in the trivia that this species is known as the “Tarlafar!” (A Tarlafar Jedi also briefly appeared in “The Acolyte” shortly after they were named, which I thought was a fun inclusion!)

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 37 UPDATES: Made a mistake with this post, as the third image of the individual in the prison jumpsuit does not actually seem to be a member of the same species. Same general character model I believe, but while this species is blue, that one is definitively gray, and as such, will be receiving their own entry in the series eventually. As of late 2024, this species made a brief “reappearance,” thanks to the “Star Wars Unlimited” TCG card “Independent Senator,” which I discovered while playing the game with my cousin over Christmas!

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 38 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 39 UPDATES: After speaking to another Wookieepedia editor, I went back to review the scene from Obi-Wan Kenobi which I mentioned back in the “Notes” of this entry (which was posted almost a year and a half before writing this update) and I’m not as confident that the same face prop was used in this scene after all, though I’m still leaning towards the fact that it’s true.

This creature does have three eyes, a bulbous, pale, round head, and coverings, just like the others. However, the tone does seem darker, which could just be the lighting, and they’re taller, though that doesn’t say much when it comes to these head-exclusive props. Because of how similar they are, I will not be creating a separate post for this individual, however, it has definitely been casted into additional doubt, and a lack of confirming features such as their OG “nun” outfit, or even just the dark lines above and below their eyes, make it dubious enough that we can’t confirm it’s the same practical costume/prop (and subsequently species) for inclusion as an appearance on sites like the Wook. Hopefully we’ll eventually get some confirmation one way or the other in some BTS material!

SPECIES: Vollick

DAY 40 UPDATES: Cavan Scott revealed on Bluesky that this is actually a Vollick, a species originating from Legends in 2004’s “Republic #60.” Additionally, as a note going forward, Darth Krall’s true name when he was a Jedi was Radaki, so for future entries I will be straying away from using titles in posts if actual names have already been been revealed.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 41 UPDATES: Oddly enough, this species was mentioned by the “Keeper of the Holocron,” Leland Chee, who included them in a graphic of various sentient “Elephantines” across Star Wars, intended to showcase that the Ortolan, Max Rebo, and Neel from “Skeleton Crew” belonged to two distinct but similar species. Unfortunately, nothing else came out of this for this particular species, and no identification or hints were dropped.

SPECIES: Buktari

DAY 42 UPDATES: Jake Lunt Davies helped me find an additional behind-the-scenes look at the costume! I also came across another piece of his concept art for the species that gives us a slightly closer look than the one I included within the initial tweet!

And finally, it turns out Leland Chee had dropped the name of this species in the comment section of a JLD Instagram post, identified as the Buktari. Additionally, it was uncovered that two members of this species can be seen in TFA, Hoogenz and Anoonda, and based on additional notes Chee dropped when asked about them, it seems the picture I included in the upper left of the initial post that I referred to as Hoogenz, as, in fact, the latter individual.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 43 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 44 UPDATES: This species shares a base model with another alien seen throughout Resistance, though given the differences, we’re not sure if they’re intended to be the same or if this was more of a cost-cutting measure. I personally classify them as different for the time being, and so featured the other species for Day 658 of the series.

SPECIES: Alcedian

DAY 45 UPDATE: Two additional members of the species were revealed to appear in the The High Republic junior novel “Escape from Valo,” and not long after the “secret” species was finally given a name: the Alcedians (thanks to a starwars.com databank entry)!

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 46 UPDATES: N/A

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 47 UPDATES: The species reappeared briefly in Andor, making them notable enough for me to make them a quick Wookieepedia page as well: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Unidentified_species_(Takodana)!

SPECIES: Nobilllian

DAY 48 UPDATES: This species has now been officially, canonically identified as the “Nobilllians” (with 3 L’s). This is thanks to the species being featured in a portion of the VR experience “Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge” final expansion “Last Call.” As stated in the following article, the species was named after Lucasfilm Publicity member Lillian Noble, who had a hand in the creation and prominence of the character Neeva, seen in the image below: https://www.ilmimmersive.com/news/beyond-the-spires-designing-the-bounty-of-boggs-triff/.

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 49 UPDATES: Didn’t do a great job of gathering diverse images of this species, something you’ll notice I did a lot early on into this unidentified species series, so I’ll include a look at some other color variations below!

SPECIES: (still unidentified)

DAY 50 UPDATES: Christian Alzmann and the ever reliable Jake Lunt Davies provided some additional insight regarding the design mentality behind Maz, as well as helping to identify concept artists, sharing background info on the character’s inception, and pointing out that it was definitely Luke D Fisher whose final design made the cut.

In regards to this piece of art, Davies had this to say:

Similarly, JLD also claimed this piece of art:

In addition, he spoke on Luke D Fisher’s behalf regarding the similarities between these designs:

And finally, to wrap up JLD’s immensely helpful contributions, he has also recently been uploading additional pieces of Maz Kanata concept art, which I will try to add here when I can!

Also due to a retcon, I was technically able to make a Legends species page for this one on Wookieepedia, as odd as that seems: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Unidentified_round-headed_species.
