Name: Nuffin

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human/Alternative

Homeworld: Unknown

Coloration: Pale Pink and Red

Biology: Nuffins were a bipedal humanoid sentient species with somewhat Human-like traits. It seems they possessed the same general build and frame as the standard Human, with a pale pink skin tone. Where the primarily differed visually, however, was with their heads, with Nuffins possessing almost balloon-like craniums. While lacking any visible nose or nostrils, they had Human-like ears situated low on the sides of their heads, with small mouths about even with their ears, and beady high-set eyes that appeared to be glassy black in coloration. They also had a series reddish tube-like growths on their heads, the ends fading into their faces, three on either side and wrapping around the backs of their heads and connecting at the back before running down their spine. Stacked vertically on the sides, these “tubes” appeared to be some sort of organ or vein, though it’s possible they may have I steaks been hair. Nuffins spoke a language known as Nuffese, though it’s unclear if they could also pronounce languages such as Basic or Huttese. It was said that Nuffins a gentle species by nature, making them prime targets for various nefarious individuals.

Lore: The Nuffins were discovered and introduced onto the greater galaxy some time prior to 5 BBY, having earned themselves a reputation among the galaxy as being clean freaks, but also gentle, pleasant beings. They were also known for developing at least one sort of spacecraft, large shoe-shaped cargo freighters simply nicknamed “Nuffin Freighters,” which they seemed to solely manufacture and sometimes operate. It would seem these freighters were commonly targeted by pirates due to their aforementioned reputation as being essentially pacifists. At least one of these freighters were captured by the Orooturooian crime boss Princess Nampi, who had the entire Nuffin crew executed save for one member whom she enslaved. This prisoner was used to lure in other pirate factions, where, after boarding the craft, they would then be ambushed in return. This setup would continue to transpire until Nampi’s death in 5 BBY, though what happened to her Nuffin slave afterwards remains unknown.

Continuity: The Nuffins currently remain exclusive to Star Wars Legends.

Unexplored: There’s honestly very little we currently know about the Nuffins. Being a one-off species from the relatively old Jabba comic run, they never got fleshed out much beyond that. However, there are enough tidbits here to pose some questions that, if answered, may lead to this species becoming much more memorable. For starters, where did the Nuffins come from, what was the name of their homeworld, system, and sector? What was this planet, moon, or other celestial object like, when did the species develop sentience, what sort of creature might they have evolved from, and what factors caused them to end up the way they are today? Was their cleanliness and gentleness due to hailing from a stark, predator-less or overall animal-less environment? And were they true pacifists, or more so just slow to anger and conflict? Nampi had “Pulse Rockets” installed on her stolen freighter, but was this an original feature the Nuffins used as well?

How well known were Nuffins across the galaxy? Were they ever members of any major galactic faction such as the Galactic Republic? Did they have any important alliances with outside corporations that assisted in their production of their freighters, or did they do absolutely everything “in-house?” Why did they choose freighting of all things, did their economy and governments hinge upon the industry, and what percentage of their population was actually involved? Was it common to find them enslaved by various criminal organizations, or were they more likely to just be killed, or was it even possible pirates took their stuff and left them alive, knowing the probably wouldn’t fight back and would just be easy marks again in the future? Exploring the above questions, as well as any of the usual worldbuilding traits I talk about in other articles that I have no mentioned here, plus receiving more illustrations/depictions that give us a better understanding of their anatomy/biology, would all serve towards making this more than just a one-off Star Wars alien, of which there are already so many.

Additional Notes: It’s definitely a unique design, I’ll give them that. Features close to almost being “cute,” though just weird enough that they end up being more uncanny and alien, which I image would be a bit more gross if they were ever to be featured in a live action or realistic-adjacent medium. Sad they never got expanded much beyond their small involvement in the Jabba run, but they did get named, which is better than a lot of the other distinct species featured in those comics. I would absolutely not mind seeing them pop up randomly in a Canon property eventually, though I do hope what little lore that was established surrounding them in the EU remains, as the whole peaceful, tidy species who went into the freighting industry for who-knows-what reason is actually pretty fun and could be goofy little gag mentioned every once in a while, and having a running “thing” surrounding them in the universe would, in turn, make them a lot more memorable as mentioned above.
