Homeworld: Sikurd
Coloration: Brown & Purple or Red & Blue
Biology: The Sikurdians were a fascinating species anatomically, being technically humanoid in nature, with a bipedal posture, four limbs, and a head, though they were in no way “Human-like.” Sikurdians had two distinctive possible appearances, though everything below the neck was identical in shape and size across both. This species possessed tentacles for limbs, which were segmented, almost ribbed in texture. Sikurdian arms ended in a single point but were very flexible, able to wrap around objects to pick them up, while their leg tentacles appear to end in something seeming to resemble more of a traditional foot. The species’ torsos were rounded and stout, though not stubby enough for the species to be classified as diminutive.
Their heads were where the species’ two variants really differed. One head type was very beast-like, with shaggy brown fur, large white eyes with small black pupils, exposed nostrils, and large mouths filled with razor sharp teeth. The tentacles and body of this variant were purple in coloration. The second possible appearance of the species instead sported light blue tentacles, with a hairless solid red head that was knot-like growths, with two of them appearing to take the place of eyes, as well as a toothless, bill-like mouth, and mottled cheeks. The reason for these distinctions was unknown, whether natural variation, lifecycle stages, subspecies, distinct races, or some other rationale. Sikurdians appeared to be strong and limber, though due to the nature of their bodies, they also may have been a bit clumsy by proxy. They also had the capacity to be Force Sensitive, and were believed to have naturally short tempers.
Lore: Sikurdians hailed from the planet Sikurd found within the Sikurd System of the Outer Rim’s “New Territories,” with their home being one of the general stops along the “Listehol Run” trade route and in the general path of the “Perlemian Trade Route,” making Sikurd a rather important planet within the landscape of the “modern galaxy.” The species themselves seemed to possess a warlike culture, known for spawning at least two major “factions,” the “Sikurdian Pirates,” which were lawless marauders who patrolled primarily within the sector surrounding their homeworld, and the “Sikurdian Privateers,” a more strict, militarized group with at least some political aspirations, but who ultimately still boiled down to just legitimized pirates.
Ever the opportunists, at the start of the “Clone Wars,” the Sikurdian Privateers decided the most effective move they could make would be to ally themselves with the “Corporate Alliance,” one of the factions backing the “Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS)” in opposition to the Galactic Republic. Operating as a subgroup under the command of the influential Koorivar, Magistrate Passel Argente, the Sikurdians would pledge their resources to the war effort, which included soldiers, as well as their naval fleet of Fantail-class Destroyers. The privateers would move the bulk of their forces to the planet Murkhana, the headquarters of the Corporate Alliance, where they would be tasked primarily with planetary defense.
Unfortunately, the Clone Wars would not play out in their favor, with the “Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)” breaking through their lines and orbitally bombarding Murkhana, with the privateers fading into obscurity, potentially all wiped out with the rise of the Galactic Empire as, following Passel Argente’s execution, the Corporate Alliance rapidly restructured in an attempt to gain Imperial favor. In their absence, or possibly their shadow, the much less organized Sikurdian Pirates would grow in power, expanding their operations and making alliances of their own. This included forming a union with both the Tervig and Zygerrian slaving empires to form illegal slave trade routes along their local Listehol Run, as well as another hyperspace lane they laid claim to, the “Shaltin Tunnels.”
It seemed, however, that at least some of these operations were intercepted by the Galactic Empire who, while not opposed the slavery, did not generally approve of organized piracy within or near their jurisdiction, nor did they let alliances between various factions and species such as the Sikurdian-Tervig-Zygerrian union flourish. An Imperial campaign would take place along the Shaltin Tunnels not long after 19 BBY, and the slavers would move their operations further into the independent “Corporate Sector” territories, presumably coming into conflict with the fiefdom’s “Corporate Sector Authority” law enforcement, also known as “CorpSec.”
Other sects of the Sikurdian Pirates had apparently traveled all the way from the Outer Rim to the Inner Rim, as far as the “Lower Flora Cloud,” where they too seemed to come into conflict with the Galactic Empire, as well as civilian vessels passing through. It is unclear what became of all of these pirates after the fall of the Empire, it’s just as easy to believe they ran rampant as it is to hope the New Republic put a greater effort on stopping all slaving-related activities. We also do not know they state of Sikurd of the native population, only hearing of those who left their homeworld to pursue lives of crime. The one thing we do know, however, if that the species had created a signature weapon known as the “Sikurdian Battle-Axe,” a large-yet-simple design that was easy for Sikurdian tentacles to wield, but may have been difficult for non-Sikurdians to utilize. They also seemed to always don unique outfits that consisted only of a rounded piece of armor covering their torsos with a large circular belt-like protrusion sticking up from the waist.
Continuity: The Sikurdians exist in both the Canon and Legends continuities, originating within the latter. Unlike most species, there’s currently a pretty even split concerning which aspects of their lore comes from each, with their physical appearance, homeworld, ties to slavery, conflicts in CorpSec territory, and their distinct battle axes coming from Legends, while their involvement with the Clone Wars, movement into the Inner Rim, and everything to do with the privateers being exclusive to Canon. The only shared elements were that the species hailed from the Sikurd System, and that they were commonly linked to piracy.
Unexplored: Given the continuity-exclusive lore situation we’ve got going on here, it’s kind of a mixed bag when asking what can, can’t, should, and shouldn’t be explored with the Sikurdians. The main question I guess to ponder is, could and should all that was established within the Star Wars Expanded Universe make the jump into Canon, their appearance(s) included? And on that note, which of the reasons of variance might be true for their drastically different head designs? Is it possible the lumpy red and blue individual wasn’t a true Sikurdian after all? What sort of creature could they possibly have evolved from? When did they develop sentience, when were they first discovered, and by whom?
Were most members of the species just your generic galactic citizens, dwelling on Sikurd and/or spread out among the galaxy? Or did the majority of the species comprise the various Sikurdian Pirate groups by the “modern age” of the galaxy? Was it true they had a naturally fiery temperament? And did this make them great warriors with powerful armies or infamous mercenaries, or were they possibly just know for being a little crankier and more volatile than those around them? What were the origins of the Sikurdian Battle-Axes, were there special methods or materials or rituals involved in their creation, and were there variances in appearance or did they all look essentially identical? What were the true reaches of their pirate factions, how many were their numbers, and how expansive were the privateers at their prime? What did the factions think of each other, of the non-pirate Sikurdians, and what did the populations think of their marauding brethren? Is it possible they enslaved members of their own species?
How long did their slaving union last? And how did their escapades within the Corporate Sector go? Was there a time where their numbers dwindled, whether due to intervention from the New Republic, CorpSec, or even an adjacent faction such as the Trianii? Or did the Empire deal a blow to their general populous, occupying Sikurd for both their relationship to pirates, potential for growing an empire of their own, or involvement with enemies of the Republic during the Clone Wars? And finally, did they possess any distinctions regarding our list of general worldbuilding traits that would better make them stand out, such as their history, architecture, technologies, arts, philosophies, developments, civilizations, alliances, politics, governments, religions, economy, exports, diets, languages, habits, practices, traditions, etc.?
Additional Notes: This is definitely a unique one, I actually had the member used for the thumbnail image featured on my unidentified species series on Twitter for a bit before it was pointed out to me that sources like Wookieepedia treated them as a member of the Sikurdian species originating from the very early days of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. I have actually not yet found true confirmation that they are 100% a Sikurdian, I believe it may have been a “duck test” situation, but given the nearly identical features from the neck down, I don’t particularly disagree either, so for now I’ll go along in treating them as one in the same, which I think only adds even more uniqueness to an already unique species. With their inclusion within Star Wars Canon, I only hope they get additional expansion eventually, including a Canon depiction that interprets this relic of an alien design. It’s very hard to imagine a design like that be involved in so many dark moments within the galaxy’s history, but I guess that’s the beauty of Star Wars’ nature as a multimedia franchise!
