Name: Krantian
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Near-Human
Homeworld: Krant
Coloration: White or Tan
Biology: Krantians were a near-Human species known for having relatively Human-like traits, if not a bit nondescript given their limited depictions. The species appeared to have the same general height, weight, and build of the average Human, with two arms and two legs. Their skin seemed to be a pale tan, almost stark white in locations, which seemed to be rather coarse and almost lumpy in texture. They seemed to potentially have naturally downturned mouths, with thin noses that appeared to sink in on the sides, as well as what looked like sunken, darkened eyes. The species also appeared capable of growing black hair on the tops of their heads as well as potentially their faces. This species had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic Standard, as well as their native tongue of “Krantian,” said to have the ability to generate “ultrasound” speech, whatever that entailed. The species may have been primarily vegetarian or vegan in nature, their diets possibly reflecting the herbivorous nature of their homeworld’s wildlife and the many agricultural colonies they established.
Lore: The Krantians were a species relatively well known throughout certain corners of the galaxy, having been introduced into the greater galaxy some time prior to the “High Republic” era, with their homeworld, the lush planet Krant, colonized primarily by members of the Human and Bothan species, as well as at least a handful of Wookiees. Despite these events, relics and abandoned temples seem to indicate that both ancient Jedi and Sith had taken up residence on the planet for a time, eventually all leaving with presumably few records detailing whatever conflicts may have taken place.
During the middle of the High Republic, it seemed the species was in relatively good standing with the Galactic Republic though were seemingly classified as an independent world, remaining neutral to outside galactic events. At least one family of Krantians attended the infamous “Valo Republic Fair” in 231 BBY, which was attacked by Nihil marauders, resulting in the death of most of the family save for two members. By the time of the “Clone Wars,” the Krantians’ opinions of the Republic had soured, as their homeworld was pulled into the war, serving as a battleground between the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS).
It seems CIS forces had initially arrived in search of the planet’s Wookiee residents, wiping out most of the colony under the command of the Chiss General Sev’rance Tann and setting up their own facilities before the Jedi Order could respond. Jedi General Echuu Shen-Jon would lead the Republic’s response, though the events that transpired that resulted in the Wookiees retaking their territory and the execution of Sev’rance Tann would cause the Jedi Master to briefly fall to the Dark Side of the Force, leading him to abandon the Order entirely in favor of exiling himself among the wilderness of Krant in shame.
The native Krantians watched all of these events and the subsequent bloodshed play out in horror, with many of them traveling to the Republic’s capital, the ecumenopolis of Coruscant, to protest their planets involvement in the war to the Senate and Jedi Order, hoping the Republic would remove their forces entirely. Unfortunately, it seems the war would come to an end before any major action could be taken, and the Galactic Empire rose to power with an immediate sour taste in their mouths regarding the Krantians and their aversion to occupation or control.
All the while, however, the Krantians had slowly been amassing a military of their own, with elite ground units and strong fortifications. These were kept hidden from the Empire for a while, who, after much scouting, eventually dispatched their own forces to inhabit the planet under the leadership of Moff Yittreas. A close figure to Grand Moss Tarkin, Yittreas immediately established his authority by rounding up thousands of Krantians, presumably those previously linked to the Republic protests, and had them publicly executed under the guide of “political treason,” earning the title of the “Butcher of Krant.” While a strategic location within the galaxy, Krant’s true value to the Empire was its abundance of untapped mineral resources both within the planet itself, as well as the two moons and among the various asteroids that orbited closely around it.
The Krantians bided their time, colluding with their closest allies, the Bothans, a longstanding relationship as the Krant System was located within the Mid Rim territory known as “Bothan Space.” Housing Bothan spies such as Utric Sandov, the Krantians eventually officially allied themselves with the Rebel Alliance, ending their self-proclaimed neutrality for the first time in recorded history. And in 0 ABY, the species officially struck back, officially initiating the “Krantian Civil War,” a series of battles which saw the combined forces of the Krantians, Wookiees, Bothans, and Rebellion Infantry slowly drive the Galactic Empire off of Krant, with the help of legendary figures Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa Solo, as well as Jedi Master Echuu Shen-Jon who finally decided to remove himself from exile after witnessing the atrocities taking place around him.
While Krant was retaken relatively quickly, the remaining Imperial forces dug in among the asteroids, establishing a new headquarters on the major asteroid “Geddes” which had been terraformed and renamed “Hanoon” to initially serve as a research and listening outpost for Bothan Space. The conflict continued for years afterwards, resulting in innumerable casualties on both sides, including the sacrifice of the redeemed Jedi Shen-Jon at the hands of Darth Vader who had briefly joined the fray while searching for an unrelated Jedi relic known as the “Vor’Na’Tu” which had been unearthed on Geddes. However, in 6 ABY, the conflict was officially brought to a close when Yittreas was finally located and killed alongside the destruction of his stronghold. As thanks for assistance with their liberation, the Krantians would formally join the New Republic, gaining representation among the Senate and closing the chapter of the six-year-war on Krant (though the conflict was actually believed to have gone on for more like a decade).
Krant itself was described as a beautiful world, covered primarily in thick forests with mountains peaking through the canopies, though there were at least some oceans sporting their own island civilizations. The trees on Krant were said to be particularly unique, with massive leaves coming in a wide variety of vibrant colors and possessing a reflective property that made them almost seemed to glow at dawn and dusk. The planet itself only had two seasons, analogous essentially to spring and fall, with foliage shedding their leaves and then growing them back almost immediately, the climate remaining temperate and pleasant. Fauna on Krant was also unique, with almost no major predator species or carnivorous animals to be found. Instead the planet was home to birds, herbivorous mammals, and all manner of unique insects. The Krantian songbirds in particular were said to produce loud yet beautiful melodies, potentially possessing the same “ultrasonic” capabilities as the Krantians. It is said their songs fill the skies every night, lulling the natives to sleep while instead keeping outsiders awake with their incessant calls.
Krant society had prospered up until the waning days of the Republic, building massive settlements across the planet while still leaving much of its wildlife untouched. While not possessing a true capital city, their two largest population centers, Theenes and Peche, were actually established so close together that only a series of bridges across chasm separated them, giving off the impression that they actually comprised one super settlement. These bridges would be briefly destroyed during the Civil War, separating both populations which each now served as a fortress, though it seems as though it was only a matter of time before they were reconnected following the removal of the Galactic Empire. Other villages dotted the landscape surrounding these settlements, and a third larger community known as Le’Roche was also established on one of the larger islands, server as an operating base for the Rebel Alliance for a time. All of these communities placed a great focus on farming and agriculture, with Krantians seeming to possess a desire to re-cultivate the land they had built upon. It also seems that it was fairly uncommon for Krant natives to travel offworld, though it did happen at least from time-to-time.
Continuity: Krantians are really only Canon in name only, though they have yet to be visually depicted or even described canonically, and we only know they come from the Krant System, with the planet Krant from Legends not being formally established yet. All of their lore outside of their brief inclusion within “The High Republic” also currently comes exclusively from the Star Wars EU for the time being.
Unexplored: Within Legends the species’ history was relatively fleshed out, though their actual characterization left a bit more to be desired. However, canonically they’re essentially a blank slate, so we’ll approach this section with both continuities in mind. If we’re taking what was previously established in mind, we then need to ask stuff like, when did the Krantians first develop sentience and what sort of Krant fauna did they evolve from? When were they first discovered, was it by the Jedi and/or Sith, and what did they do on Krant and its surrounding moons/asteroids before all up and vanishing? Why had the Krantians remained neutral for so long, had they ever joined in major galactic powers or factions in the past, and when did their relationship with the Bothans first begin?
Moving forward a bit, it would be nice to iron out the timeline of their occupation and the Krantian Civil War as there are some discrepancies regarding when it began, ended, and how long it lasted, as well as when exactly the Galactic Empire formally arrived. It would also be nice to know what happened to the species and world following their alliance with the New Republic, both in relation to the Canon and Legends trajectories of the newly established government. Did they ever decided to remove themselves once again, or did they stick with the New Republic in facing future rising threats? And did they ever colonize Gennes or any of their other moons or asteroids post-Empire, or were they content all remaining on Krant?
On a more personal level, what were some Krantian ideologies? Did they have any religions, major customs, practices, traditions, or philosophies? Did they actually possess vegetarian diets, why did they pursue agriculture so much, did they mine their own world and asteroids for resources or were they unaware of or uncaring regarding the minerals overall, and what did their “ultrasound” abilities actually entail? Could they scream loudly enough to stun their enemies, or could they just project their voices over long distances, or something else entirely? Additionally, what did the species actually look like? Our depictions, even within the EU, are very limited and hard to make out, both in original pixel form as well as having been run through a CRT filter. So having a clean depiction, especially within a Canon source, would be very beneficial. And finally, what aspects of their lore could and should make the jump into Canon, and what should maybe be left to their original tale to make way for a fresh take or interpretation?
Additional Notes: Been wanting to write about this one for a while! It was pretty recently made well known that the species had actually been depicted, non-Galactic Battlegrounds players such as myself were generally unaware as no image had ever really been uploaded online in places such as Wookieepedia, presumably due to the low quality. We were able to track down the developers resources and locate the original avatar assets, which I will include below, though even they don’t give us much of a better look (in fact I’d say they’re even worse as it’s hard to interpret what their final appearances was intended to look like). Still, it was fun being part of the project that made their appearance more widely known, and I’m happy to have all of their lore officially consolidated in one place, we can now only hope, given their canonization within “The High Republic,” that future appearances for the species, including a decent illustration, are right around the corner!
