Campi

Name: Campi

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human/Alternative

Homeworld: Unknown

Coloration: Purple

Biology: The Campis were a near-Human species who were nearly visually identical to their Human counterparts, save for a few visible difference. Firstly, their skin was bright purple in coloration, also possessing black hair and yellow or red irises in their eyes. They stood slightly taller than the average Human, with elongated torsos, often being on the leaner side. Their facial features were otherwise nearly identical, despite sometimes having slightly pointed ears. Their primary distinct trait was their third arm, a smaller limb, otherwise identical to their primary two, extending out from the middle of the right side of their torso. This arm had all the utility as their other two, just not the same reach, though it still made them one of the only known 3-armed humanoids in the galaxy. Campis had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic Standard with no issue.

Lore: The Campis were a species discovered sometime prior to the formation of the New Republic, known for being a species deeply rooted in tradition. Their people were referred collectively as the “Campi Tribe,” and it seems there may not have been many among their population, at least not by the fall of the Galactic Empire. They had long history, with their relics becoming legendary among collectors and treasure hunters, fetching a pretty price among criminal organizations, though also still of great significance to the Campis themselves who sought to bring some of those in circulation across the galaxy back home. Small cylindrical totems known as “burnclay formations,” sporting various faces and patterns engraved across or molded onto them, were of particular significance. Many of the most ornate overlaid formations were designed to honor the Campis’ pantheon of deities, though a cruder variety seemingly proved to be even more uncommon.

One of the former deity formations, the “Totem of Marthxi,” of which only one seemingly existed, had ended up in the hands of the crime boss of the Quarter Clan, Sabi Sabo Acidy. Somehow, the New Republic had managed to broker a deal, with Acidy returning the totem to members of the Campi Tribe, in return for favor from the New Republic, and in turn, the Campis would receive support from the new galactic government as well. The Campis sent two emissaries, some of their finest, known as Lady Xiering and her partner Stingxi. Though trained warriors, their ornate purple and gold garb and high-end blasters were supposedly ceremonial, presenting themselves as regal representatives of a traditional people who wanted to preserve a part of their history through peace and negotiations. The duo partnered with the legendary Han Solo, as well as the New Republic’s “Department of Artifacts and Archival Goods Retrieval (D.A.A.G.R)” agent Dr. Chelli Lona Aphra, who was working with the group against her will, to visit the Quarter Clan’s HQ on the planet Felucia and retrieve the artifact.

The pair of Campis reiterated to the New Republic agents the importance or retrieving this object, stating that according to their Elders, the Totem of Marthxi was forged by the gods of their sun, granting their people sustenance, peace, and most of all, luck. They had long since lost these supposed blessings, and were eager to reinstate the relic, though should the legends be believed, its luck element seems to have kept its owners over the years both blessed and protected, causing them to never want to depart with the item. This exchange truly was considered a once in a lifetime occurrence, and all parties involved hoped it would go off without a hitch. At least, that’s what everyone was led to believe, though in reality, each had a trick up their sleeve.

During the exchange, the massive, eel-like Sabi Sabo Acidy ate one of his underlings, before it was covertly revealed that the totem he was offering was a forgery. The two Human participants then snooped around and found the real one, though Han Solo also showcased a second fake which he had brought in case Dr. Aphra tried to take it for herself. Then, once the first subterfuge was revealed, the two esteemed Campis showed their true colors, revealing they had every intention of betraying their people, using the luck of the totem to get away and sell it, so that they could spend the rest of their days as lovers traversing the galaxy in peace. Fortunately, they stole the second fake before showcasing their true prowess with their blasters and fleeing, leaving Solo, Aphra, and Acidy with the real one. The group then flipped a coin to decide who would get to keep it, the New Republic emissaries eventually leaving with the totem to return it to the Campi Tribe proper, the outcome of the altercation a surprisingly positive one as the Campi got their relic, the Quarter Clan seemingly came out unpunished, and the New Republic attachés returning unharmed.

Continuity: The Campis are a species exclusive to the current Star Wars Canon.

Unexplored: There’s a lot that remains unexplored regarding the Campis, including, surprisingly, their homeworld, which, while referenced in their debut issue, was never outright identified. So I would definitely start with, where exactly do the Campis come from? How large is their “current” population and why are they stilled referred to as a singular tribe? When did they first develop sentience, what did they evolve from/why did they evolve in such a way to have three arms arranged in such a unique matter, when were they first discovered, and how long have their relics been circulating the galaxy? Why are these relics so sought after, what makes the Campis so popular among historians and collectors, and what do the Campis think of this treatment? What is their level of progression in relation to other species of the New Republic, and did they have any prior alliances with groups like the Galactic Republic or encounters with the Empire?

What caused the two emissaries sent to be held in such high regard, and how did the general population and their leadership deal with such a betrayal? Was their reputation among the New Republic tarnished, or did it only grow stronger with time (until the new government’s defeat at the hands of the First Order)? Were there many other Campis out and about in the galaxy, or were most still found on their homeworld, leading to the duo’s desire for freedom to potentially be more justified in some way? We know they had some sort of military structure, but how big and/or powerful was it, and did they have any distinct weaponry and spacecraft or even just strategic insight? Were they ever involved in any major conflicts, and did they have any well known enemies, potentially leading to their galactic popularity (or infamy).

Something I must also ask when it comes to species with a variety of deities is, how many, if any of these deities are real? Its more common than some think for local gods to exist within the Star Wars universe, and do or did the sun gods or Marthxi truly bless the Campi Tribe? Did the totems have special power, and does the one that eventually ended up in the hands of Han Solo and Dr. Aphra actually have the power of luck on its side? Had the Campi people been suffering for centuries, maybe millennia, and their future was just now looking up as their relic was returned to them? Finally, its never bad to bring up our usual list of worldbuilding traits to be explored, including stuff like their languages, diets, anatomical abnormalities that maybe we cannot observe, traditions, religions, distinct habits, exports, governments, cultures, cities and architectures, and many other similar concepts that would be beneficial to see fleshed out someday!

Additional Notes: It took me longer than I’d care to admit to notice the third arm when first diving into “Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent #3,” though when I finally did, I got pretty excited. What I thought was just another generic colored Human species turned out to be a generic Human species with a unique trait we’ve hardly ever seen among a thousand pictured + named species and twenty times as many pictured + unnamed (I have not researched every unpictured but named alien to see if any others are described in novels and the like). So yeah, not bad, and I do hope we see more of them soon, which I feel the comic may be setting up for. Maybe the species is more important to the New Republic (and galaxy at large) than we currently think, and maybe we’ll even see them in an upcoming series or something, though I’m not sure how you could do this particular third arm in live action without it coming off as cheap or uncanny… I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
