Name: Altiri
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Near-Human
Homeworld: Altiria (Anaris)
Coloration: Pink, Purple, or Blue
Biology: The Altiri were a near-Human species who shared the same general height, weight, build, and frame as the average Human. Being bipedal humanoids, they had the usual two arms, two legs, and one head, though there were a few noticeable differences between Altiri and Humans as well. Most notably was their pigmentation, with Altiri being variations of deep purple, pink, lavender, or even light blue in coloration, while usually possessing white or silver hair regardless of age, though their hair could also be a naturally purple or even jet black.
The species also had large brown irises that took up the majority of their visible eyes, though white sclera could still be seen around the edges. Altiri seemed to have slightly larger ears than that of the average Human, and also possessed sizeable foreheads. Alongside their native tongue of Altirish, the species was able to clearly pronounce Galactic Basic. They were also capable of being Force Sensitive, and even likely possessed a distinctly strong connection to the Force given what we’ve observed so far.
Lore: The Altiri were one of two sentient species to hail from a planet found within the Unknown Regions, known as “Altiria” to the Altiri, and “Anaris” to the planet’s other local population, the Anarrians. This was due to a perpetual dispute between the species, each of which held equal influence over the planet, and it remains unclear which of these names, if any, was adopted by the outside galaxy to refer to the world. The divide between the two species was spurred on by the fact that they differed in nearly every ideology possible.
The Altiri believed that there was no greater task than to study philosophy, embrace spirituality, and spend one’s entire life bettering themselves. They constantly engaged with various art forms, prioritizing self-expression and individuality, while also expanding their understanding of the outside galaxy. Their thirst for knowledge led to many artistic, sociological, and even scientific discoveries, and though the species remained rather obscure in the grand scheme of the galaxy, they were still considered to be on the upper end of the intelligence scale.
Despite being a species who valued peace and deterred any infighting, they had been locked into an intense war with the Anarrians since their earliest recorded history. In the millennia leading up to 6,000 BBY, both the Altiri and the Anarrians had been nothing more than scattered, wandering tubes of nomads, clashing with each other using primitive means and simple warfare. The years surrounding 6,000 BBY were considered a turning point for the world, as both were said to have moved into the modern age.
Potentially spurred on by influence from the first outside visitors, both races gained access to advanced technologies around this time, each claiming one of their homeworld’s two continents and establishing a centralized government there, that being the “Altirian Republic,” who wanted to help their planet catch up to the rest of the outside galaxy through whatever means necessary, while also attempting to wipe the Anarrians off the face of the map so they could finally achieve complete and total peace.
The Anarrians on the other hand formed a militarized state known as the “Anarrian Empire,” focusing all of their resources into developing weapons and vehicles of war. They believed, above all else, in order and uniformity. They saw art, philosophy, and sciences not specifically related to the advancement of power, to be complete and utter waste and foolishness. Above all else, they prioritized strength and physicality, with their culture and later government revolving around rituals of combat and shows of power. The Anarrians had a rigid hierarchy, and believed they should be the sole rulers of the world, thus, they worked to wipe out the Altiri entirely.
This longstanding effort had caused the Altiri to develop weapons and armies of their own, even forming a rather formidable military, not only to defend their land, but also in an attempt to rid their home from the Anarrians which they viewed as a plague. As the two major governments formed, their conflicts turned from brief skirmishes into small-scale wars, usually either aggressive sieges on the continental coasts, or maritime warfare throughout the massive ocean that separated the two. Unfortunately, though they would occasionally gain or lose ground, the Altiri and the Anarrians would be locked in a stalemate for the next 4,000 years or so.
Over this time, both species would finally develop spacefaring vessels, and, though a few would take to the stars in search of better lives away from the constant warfare, most of these ships would just be used so that the Altiri and their counterparts could claim their planet’s moons as their territory as well. In the final 2,000 years leading up to the collapse of the Galactic Republic, many of the planet’s pristine waters, lush plains, and precious forests had been reduced to a polluted and ardent mess, though it appears the fighting had mostly died down as the two groups prepared for one final clash.
Shortly after the rise of the Galactic Empire, though completely divorced from those events, the two species’ rage would finally come to a head. Abandoning all notions of peace, and refusing any help or guidance from the outside galaxy, the Altiri declared there would be one final, deciding war, promising to annihilate the Anarrians utterly and completely, and their enemies would make the exact same declaration. This battle would be one for the ages, spanning land, sea, and sky, as well as the space surrounding Altiria/Anaris and even their multiple moons.
This war would last for upwards of 40 years, and saw the unleashing of countless atrocities and weapons of mass destruction. No area on the planet save for the remotest of regions and depths of the seas would go untouched, and as the world burned, the population of both species would dwindle. By the time their war had come to an end, just before 25 ABY, both species were on the brink of extinction, with no victor coming out on top. Though the established governments remained, they were shadows of their former selves, and nearly all technological advancements were lost.
Those who lived on the planet regressed back to essentially the bronze age, cut off from their brethren on the moons, who fared little better. There was little hospitable land left, the world so damaged that it was even seemingly passed over by the Yuuzhan Vong during their conquest of the entire galaxy. The Altiri were in ruins, and as the last remaining remnants of their once great, peaceful, and artistic society crumbled around them, they could only wallow in their poor choices and senseless aggression. Though it wasn’t out of the question for the species to persevere, it is difficult to say whether they would even have the will or unity to do so following this event.
Still, those few Altiri who had gotten out in time seemed to lead rather full lives across the galaxy, taking their love for expressionism and spirituality to wherever they ended up. It was common to see Altiri dressed in ornate clothing, and they usually had various gemstones secured to their foreheads for reasons currently not known, though presumably religious practices or possibly a way to enhance their connection to the Force. At least one Altiri by the name of Lene Kostana would even go on to become a rather well known Jedi Master during the final days of the Order, making many more than aware of her species as a whole.
Continuity: The Altiri are a pretty interesting case as they did exist within the EU and had somewhat fleshed out lore, though they were never pictured. Then, like the Hassarians, when they made the jump into Canon they were finally illustrated for the first time, making most of their lore non-Canon while their visual appearance non-Legends. Still, what we’ve seen so far regarding them canonically has not contradicted anything within the EU so far, so we can only hope that they presumably intend to keep them fairly faithful to what was first originally established back in pre-Disney 2010.
Unexplored: In Canon, nearly everything outside of their appearance and the fact that they had been discovered some time prior to the High Republic era remains a complete mystery and open book for future lore expansions. That being said, as mentioned above, there’s nothing to say their established EU lore can’t or won’t exist within Canon, so we’re first going to ask some questions considering that is the case, as well as some queries about what may or may not be within continuity at the end. First and foremost, when did the Altiri (and the Anarrians) develop sentience, what sort of creatures might they have evolved from, and was it possible the two denizens of their planet shared a common ancestor?
How long did it take them to develop into nomadic tribes, did they evolve on separate continents, or the same one, with one group setting sail later on, and were the two enemies from the get-go, or did they initially just view each other with curiosity or even favor before developing their distinct and clashing philosophies? Why did the Altiri form a fascination with art, expression, and self-discovery? Did it stem from some sort of survival instinct, is it possible they simply had a natural propensity for these things, or was there some other cause, potentially originating from offworld visitors?
At what point exactly did the Altiri unify, when did the Altirian Republic truly begin to take shape, and what spurred on their desire for such an institution? Were the Altiri ever instigators in their early war against the Anarrians, or were they always the victims at first, formed to militarize only for the sake of their own survival? How strong was their fighting force, and did they ever seek assistance from outside parties, including militias, corporations, or even the Galactic Republic? Did they even know what was going on throughout the galaxy over the years, or were they so far removed from everything else that they were unaware of events like the rise of the Nihil, Stark Hyperspace conflict, Clone Wars, fall of the Republic, Galactic Civil War, etc.?
What happened during those final two millennia before the all out war that subsumed their world? How many Altiri managed to spread out among the stars before the near-extinction even of their home planet? What did the final decades-long conflict look like, how many lives were lost, and just how far back did the two species set themselves by the time it was all over? Was there a chance for either species’ survival, and even moreso, could they finally make peace as they attempted to preserve what was left of their shared home, or was there no chance of salvaging any possible goodwill? What did the greater galaxy think of this event, if they were even aware of it? Did the Empire know and simply leave them to their own devices, successfully hoping to kill two birds with one stone? And what did offworlders even refer to their planet as?
With just their Canon story in mind, what aspects could and should remain? Do the Annarians even exist, or are the Altiri on their own this time around? Would this mean they would finally have the peaceful, artistic lifestyle they had initially sought after, or would the nature that was slowly revealed throughout the EU still rear its ugly head, leading them to come into conflict with some other species or group later on down the line? How many Altiri can be found throughout the Canon galaxy? Were they any more or less known given the direction the galaxy took this time around? And is their fate any brighter than the bleak “ending” we’ve seen play out in the past?
Additional Notes: This species is a fascinating one, and were excitingly, finally pictured almost 14 years to the day after they were first mentioned, which was just shortly before I initially wrote this article! Long known species finally receiving vital pieces of their existence, such as an illustration, name, homeworld, backstory, etc., is honestly one of the main reasons I decided to chronicle species like I do on this site, so I consider occasions like this both validation and reasons to celebrate. It seems as though the species will be appearing even more in the future as we learn more about Lene Kostana’s early life, so as that info begins to roll in as well, I will continue to amend and update this article!

Is this species compatible with humans?

Unfortunately we don’t yet have enough info to have a definitive answer to this question, though generally in Canon if a species is fairly similar to Humans in appearance they can produce hybrid offspring! So unconfirmed but relatively likely!
