Candovantan

Last Updated: 09/09/2025

Name: Candovantan (Candovant)

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Alternative

Homeworld: Candovant

Coloration: Tan, Brown, Red, and/or Pink

Biology: The Candovantans were an odd looking humanoid species with features that are difficult to completely discern. They stood approximately the same height as the average Human, if not slightly taller, with the same general weight, frame, and build. They had two arms and two legs, with five digits on each of their hands. Candovantans were a hairless species, with smooth flesh that was varying shades of purple, brown, and tan in coloration.

The species had tall necks which were dark in coloration and fairly wrinkled. Their heads were bulbous, sporting a pinkish lower face and jaw, tan upper jaw, nose, and brow, while the top of their head was around the same dark purplish-brown as their necks. Their brows were wrinkled and pronounced, leading down to a prominent nose ridge with large nostrils situated on either side. Their mouths were small, with a crease running up the center of their lip, as well as a recessed chin. Candovantan eyes were large, glassy, and solid black, allowing the species to perceive the ultraviolet spectrum. They were also seemingly capable of pronouncing Galactic Basic.

Lore: The Candovantans, also occasionally referred to simply as Candovants, were a well-known species native to the planet Candovant, a world nestled within the Colonies Region and in close proximity to their neighboring world, Abednedo. As early back as the tail end of the High Republic era, the Candovantans had garnered a reputation as a powerful species within the Galactic Republic, holding a prominent role within the Republic Senate. This was seemingly, in part, due to their homeworld’s location at the junction of two of the galaxy’s most prominent hyperspace lanes, the “Hydian Way” and the “Corellian Run.”

Unfortunately, the Candovantans faced much discrimination after the Republic fell and the Galactic Empire came to power. It is believed they remained a part of the Imperial Senate for an indeterminable amount of time, however, their homeworld was decimated when it was selected (sometime presumably years prior) as a target for Operation: Cinder following the Emperor’s temporary demise. The orbital bombardment proved only partially successful, as much of the planet’s surface was ravaged but the world itself was not destroyed and the species carried on. Following this tragedy, their hate for the Imperial Remnant only grew, and they became one of the first species to join the New Republic, once again gaining immense political sway.

The New Republic Candovantan Senator, an individual by the name of Zygli Bruss, held great power among their people and was seemingly fairly respected among the new Senate. Bruss almost met their end when they were a victim of the notorious “Napkin Bombing,” a terrorist attack launched by the Amaxine Warriors meant to distract the New Republic from the First Order’s emergence. Fortunately, they were only injured during this event, carried away to make a quick recovery. Unfortunately, Bruss perished less than a year later when the entire Hosnian System was destroyed by Starkiller Base. From that point on, it became even more common to see Candovantans among the ranks of the budding Resistance.

Continuity: The Candovantans are exclusive to the current Star Wars Canon, they and their homeworld being some of the first elements introduced.

Unexplored: It’s nice to have a newer species where we’ve seen glimpses of their existence all throughout the established Canon eras. The species hasn’t appeared a lot, but we have enough lore to broadly fill in a lot of the gaps. Still, I think we can ask a few questions that would help us understand this species more in depth! For starters, when did the Candovantans first develop sentience, what creatures might they have evolved from and why did they evolve in the manner they did, and when were they first discovered? Is it possibly they were first visited by Republic explorers, and how long ago did they join the Republic? Why exactly did they hold so much influence, and was it due to Candovant’s location, some sort of unique or abundant export or service, or simply because they were confident, assertive, knowledgeable, or involved with various events, factions, or other species?

How did the Candovantans react when the Empire rose to power, and how did the Empire view them, not only as a non-Human species, but a conventionally odd looking one? Did they face much discrimination, and how long were they a part of the Imperial Senate? What was the exact degree of devastation they incurred during Operation Cinder, and what percentage of their population and civilization survived? How long did it take for them to at least partially recover, and what extent of their involvement within the New Republic? Additionally, how did they fare during the First Order-Resistance War, and what did they do after they were fully free following the Emperor’s final defeat at the Battle of Exegol? Alongside these questions, it would also be nice to see general worldbuilding concepts like their history, society, economy, government, philosophies, religions, traditions, habits, diets, languages, advancements, etc. at any given era fleshed out in much more detail!

Additional Notes: I was initially put off by just how this species looks, and assumed for quite some time that they were a relatively obscure race that had just randomly appeared in the background of projects like The Force Awakens and Andor. Fortunately, they far exceeded my expectations when I finally got around to doing some research on them, and I quickly found myself a huge fan of the established Candovantan lore so far. I definitely have a feeling that we’ll be seeing a lot more of this species in the coming years, and I can’t wait to come back and update this article when that eventually happens!
