Name: Mohsenian
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Beast (Rodent/Ovine)
Homeworld: Mohsenia
Coloration: White, Tan, & Black
Biology: The Mohsenians were a bipedal humanoid race, known for a few distinctive traits. They seemingly stood slightly shorter than the average Human, possibly enough to be classified as diminutive. They were relatively thin, with two arms and two legs, although many of their features were obscured by a thick layer of coarse, white, insulated wool that gave them resistance to frigid temperatures. Their skin, which was only seen around their face, was tan/cream in coloration and smooth in texture. The species also appeared to have traits lifted from sheep or possibly something like a mole or echidna. They had four or five-clawed hands, said claws being black at the base but fading to white by the tip.
Mohsenians had semi-elongated snouts with downward-turning nostrils and small mouths at the end, with scraggly whiskers in between. The species had small, white teeths on either jaw, with what appeared to be a reddish interior to their mouth. Their eyes were large, glassy, and solid black, with rings of dark skin encircling them. They had no visible ears or aural cavities, which were most likely tucked within their mane of wool. Supposedly the Mohsenians evolved from a burrowing creature, presumably subterranean in nature given their eyes, and still possessed strong digging capabilities with their claws, able to easy bury themselves in soil or snow. They also had a highly acute sense of smell, able to literally distinguish known sicknesses, ailments, and bodily fluids simply by the faintest scents they gave off, making the species incredible healers, medics, and doctors.
Lore: Little is currently known about the Mohsenians, aside from the fact that they hailed from a little known Outer Rim world known as Mohsenia. Housed within what was described as the “New Territories,” Mohsenia was presumably discovered relatively later into the Republic’s expansion, although they had been discovered and integrated into the galaxy by the height of the First Order-Resistance War. At least one Mohsenian was a member of the Resistance, which may have been indicative of their greater allegiance or previous history with the First Order or Galactic Empire. They were also apparently valued in the medical field given their aforementioned sense of smell, but we have yet to see that bit of lore in practice outside of the Resistance’s ranks.
Continuity: The Mohsenians were created specifically for Star Wars Canon, debuting in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
Unexplored: As with many species from the era, there are tidbits of interesting lore here, but not enough to really concretely characterize them yet. That means that we’ll mostly be stuck to asking basic worldbuilding questions about them for the time being, with a few slightly more specific ideas interjected here and there. When exactly where the Mohsenians first discovered, and by whom? What sort of allegiances did they have, and were they ever oppressed by the First Order, Galactic Empire, or even ancient Sith Order, potentially leading to their association with the Resistance, or even the New Republic or Rebel Alliance? Aside from being skilled healthcare workers, were the Mohsenians known for anything else in particular across the galaxy? And what sort of evolution, history, society, economy, government(s), politics, exports, arts, architecture, religions, philosophies, traditions, cultural practices, traditions, anatomical traits, diets, languages, etc. might they have had that would truly set them apart?
Additional Notes: There’s not a lot to say about the Mohsenians at the moment, although I would really like to know what animal(s) may have inspired their finalized design. Hopefully someday I might be able to reach out to Luke D. Fisher and inquire about their origins more! (I published this article before they made their animated debut in the “Tales of the Empire” animated series, which showcased their digging capabilities. Needless to say, I was very excited when one popped up onscreen, in fact, the entire series did a great job of bringing Disney-era live action designs into animation, and I hope they do more of the same in the future!)
