Classification: Fungi/Amorphous
Homeworld: Unknown (Agaris)
Coloration: Varied
Biology: Agarians were a sentient fungi species that varied widely in appearance but generally seemed to be small in stature. It would be foolhardy to attempt to describe this species in any sort of detailed manner as no two Agarians looked alike. They often took the appearance of any number of known mushrooms or fungi, some being umbrella-shaped while others were conical. They possessed any number of limbs in any number of configurations, meaning that they could not be classified as solely bipedal, quadrupedal, or any other standardized mode of locomotion. The species also varied widely in coloration, although presumably took on more earthen colors such as tan, brown, or red. Their average height was equally hard to gauge, although, from what we can tell, they seemed to be on the shorter side, presumably even capable of being held in the palm of the average Human’s hand.
While they did possess “heads,” Agarians did not have traditional faces, and thus lacked any sort of true eyes, ears, noses, or mouths. The species was considered blind, with no way to actually see, although they could still navigate their surroundings through their senses of smell and hearing, with some of the crevices on their bodies serving as nostrils and aural cavities. They could also detect a number of other acute sensory factors, such as air flow, changes in temperature, and even subtle vibrations. The species did not feed in a traditional sense, and only required periodic exposure to sunlight to survive. The species did not drink nor breath, and could survive in almost any climate, non-subterranean environment, or even the “vacuum” of space. Because they did not have conventional mouths, they were incapable of speaking Galactic Basic. Instead, they communicated via a complex language of squelching and huffing sounds that could be understood and mimicked by other species.
While most individual Agarians seemed to have a favored default appearance, they all had the capability to change the shape of their body to a currently unknown degree. They could absorb or grow limbs, change the overall structure of their frame, and increase their size at will, making them an incredibly adaptable species. Unfortunately, the species was weak to fire, and could be wiped out by concentrated flames. It’s possible the Agarians were effectively immortal when it came to their natural lives, or at the very least, they were seemingly capable of living for millennia. The species could reproduce by expelling seedlings, although said seedlings were extremely volatile and could be used as makeshift bombs to fend off threats as well, along with the ability to expel clouds of sleep-inducing spores that could affect most other species. Somehow the species was able to launch themselves into space, forming into large seed pod clusters that they seemed to have some directional control over, searching out and crash landing on worlds that they viewed as additional suitable homes.
Lore: The Agarians are a mysterious and ancient species, originating from somewhere in Wild Space or even further from the Core, very likely from a galaxy other than the one we know. They arrived on the seldom-explored planet of Agaris at least a few thousand years prior to the collapse of the Galactic Republic, during what many would describe as the “Old Republic” era, although if they had been discovered back then, they were not well documented nor made public knowledge. It wasn’t until the reign of the Galactic Empire that the species was formally discovered by a family of researchers, the famous Grafs, who had dedicated their life to exploring Wild Space and researching the various secrets it housed. Coming across this mysterious and distinct species, they were the ones to give them the name “Agarian” after the planet they were found on, although we know this was not their true home.
Unfortunately, the Galactic Empire had also established a presence on Agaris by this time, mining the world for its natural resources and purging the world of its Agarian population through the form of Imperial Incinerator Troopers. Thanks to the Grafs, the threat was, at least, partially stopped, and the Agarians gained an ally who excitedly desired to communicate with them and learn of their secrets. While the Graf family could not remain on Agaris for too long, they documented many fascinating discoveries and served as a positive example of what the outside galaxy could look like. Fortunately, the Agarians continued to thrive on Agaris during this period, and it was also learned that they made many dedicated efforts to spread their presence across the known galaxy, colonizing many suitable worlds. This meant that the Agarian population was quite possibly much larger than originally thought, and there could be countless secret colonies found on various other planets, known or unknown.
Continuity: Despite their bizarre nature and colorless illustration, the Agarians are actually exclusive to Star Wars Canon, coming from the “Adventures in Wild Space” series which was a canonical treasure trove for a site like this!
Unexplored: This is one of a number of species who may be best left with an air of mystery surrounding them, although I suppose we can still ask a few questions with answers that would help us better characterize this species so that we can feature them in our own works someday! There are so many intentional questions left open regarding their origins, but where might the Agarians have come from, were they from inside or outside of the known galaxy, was Agaris their first or primary colony in the main galaxy, and how many other worlds might they have already reached within the thousands of years of vaguely recorded history? How often might the species have interacted with non-Agarians, did various individuals or worlds know of their existence but just not who they were, where they came from, or what to call them? Is it possible they had various different names across different corners of the galaxy, and what did the Agarians refer to themselves as?
What did the species think of the outside galaxy, including the various travelers they came across as well as the Galactic Empire? Did they pay attention to the ongoings of the galactic landscape, and how might they have processed information? Although they were viewed as traditionally primitive, what was their level of awareness? We know they were at least sentient, but were they simply driven by core desires, or could they be some of the most complex thinkers in the galaxy with goals we couldn’t even begin to comprehend? What brought them to the known galaxy in the first place, and why did they continue to spread out and colonize worlds? Was it instinct, the desire to explore, possibly an act of fleeing from something or someone, or even an attempt to conquer and consume all of existence? And how were they even able to make it into space in the first place? Were they able to rocket themselves into the atmosphere via some sort of combined explosion, or did they just latch on to any possible outgoing vessels? There are so many concepts that might be better left open-ended, although I wouldn’t mind getting some concrete lore as well!
Additional Notes: This is such a fascinating species we have right here. I’ll be honest, it took me wayyy too long to realize this wasn’t just another obscure EU species from the 80s when I first discovered them. But I was pleasantly surprised to learn more, and every new tidbit revealed made me love the species even more! This is definitely one of the harder articles I’ve had to write as their such an abstract concept, but it was a blast nonetheless, I love both their “name” and design(s), and hope to see more of them some way, somehow, someday soon!
