Name: Pan-preneur
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Amphibious
Homeworld: Sonn Vilmari
Coloration: Orange and Blue
Biology: The Pan-preneurs were an amphibious, fish-like species hailing from the ocean-covered planet of Sonn Vilmari. The species was bipedal and humanoid, seeming to stand slightly taller than a Human, around the same height as the average Mon Calamari. The species has two legs, as well as two arms, their hands possessing four spindly fingers each. The species had slick, hairless skin that was ridged in texture, described as being dark orange in coloration and covered in mottled blue spots.
Pan-preneur heads were large and complex, being tall with various ridges, lobes, and other symmetrical growths sprouting from all sides. They had small mouths that seemed to naturally rest open, their upper lip overlapping their bottom. Just above their mouths, they had two exposed nostrils but little in the way of a nose structure. Pan-preneur eyes bulged significantly out of their heads, with large, vertical pupils surrounded by pronounced sclera. It is unclear how or if the species could even blink. They had no visible ears or aural cavities, although the ridged flaps extending from the back portion of their cheeks/jaws presumably housed their gills.
Pan-preneurs had the capacity to breath both under and above water with no known limitations. Like many similar species, the size and shape of their eyes presumably granted them increased vision within the dark, murky depths of their homeworld. Their similar appearance to that of the Mon Calamari isn’t coincidental, and it’s said they shared a distant ancestry, also apparently related to a number of other non-specified aquatic species spread across the galaxy as well. It’s unclear whether this meant they were an offshoot of the Mon Calamari that had long since separated or (more likely) one of many once-subspecies descended from a common ancestor, potentially including the Quarren as well. Pan-preneurs seemingly had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic, although we know nothing about their primary language.
Lore: Sadly very little was ever revealed about this species, aside from the aforementioned distant ties to the Mon Calamarians and any number of other similar races. We know their homeworld, Sonn Vilmari, was covered in an ocean environment, and was additionally located within the Outer Rim. Specifically, it was nestled within the seldom visited “Colundra Sector,” meaning they were neighbors with the much more prominent species, the Xexto, who themselves were also the genetic basis for the Quermians. Unfortunately, there are no documented interactions between the Xexto and Pan-preneurs (or the only other known sentient race found within the sector, the Kashoonara). The species had been discovered and introduced into the greater galaxy by the Galactic Civil War era, although, given we’ve only ever seen one instance, it’s hard to infer anything else about the species as a whole at this time.
Continuity: The Pan-preneurs remain an obscure product of only one random source within the EU, and thus, cannot currently be considered Canon.
Unexplored: Given how, when, and where they came from, this species remains understandably unexplored. Still, what tidbits we did receive regarding their deeper history and lore were relatively fascinating, so the following are a few questions that, if answered, would help flesh out the intrigue surrounding the concepts introduced, and thus, make this species much more memorable and usable. Starting, as always, with inquiries surrounding their origins. Where did the Pan-preneurs come from? How exactly were they linked to the Mon Calamari, are they an offshoot or possibly distant cousin species, and what other amphibious aliens (known or unknown) might they have been related to as well? Is it possible they’re the greatest representation of the common ancestor or missing link, and if not, how did their specific subsect arrive on Sonn Vilmari?
When were the species first discovered (or rediscovered) by the outside galaxy, how long had they been introduced to and accepted by offworlders, and what was the ratio of Pan-preneurs outside of Sonn Vilmari versus those who remained at any given point in their history? On that note, what exactly was Sonn Vilmari like and how might it have differed or compared to other similar oceanic worlds? Did the species ever form any meaningful political or social relationships with the Mon Calamari, Quarren, or other aquatic species, or did their distant history mean nothing to them in the modern day? What sort of alliances might the Pan-preneurs have formed over the years, and were they ever members of the Galactic Republic and represented on the Senate? How did they fair during various volatile eras, either Canon or within the EU, such as the First Galactic Civil War, Clone Wars, High Republic, Old Republic, Yuuzhan Vong Invasion, Cold War/First Order-Resistance Conflict, Second Galactic Civil War, etc.? And finally, what were the finer details regarding some of their basic worldbuilding elements such as economy, society, politics, culture, exports, advancements, religions, philosophies, traditions, diets, architecture, and more?
Additional Notes: I totally thought the featured image above (and only illustration we received of the species throughout the EU’s primary lifespan) was just a strangely drawn Mon Calamari when I first saw it, but was pleasantly surprised to see the similarities weren’t left as coincidence. Still, there isn’t much to set this species apart from the 1,000+ other named + pictured sentient species (probably a tenth of which who are amphibious), and the design here seems overly complicated or at least hard to fully comprehend and appreciate in the style it was depicted. So if this species ever reappears in a visual medium, I hope they give us a much clearer redesign that makes them truly distinct, while (should this tidbit of lore remain) still harken back to their ancient ties with the Mon Calamari!
