Warthog

Last Updated: 2/24/2024

Name: Warthog

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Beast (Suidae)

Homeworld: Unknown

Coloration: Red and Black

Biology: Warthogs were a bipedal sentient species whose heads resembled that of real world, well… warthogs. They were fairly humanoid in shape, standing around the same height as the average Human, if not slightly taller given the size of their head, with the same general build and features, including two legs, two arms, and five-fingered hands. Where the species primarily differed from Humans was their aforementioned Suidae-esque faces. Their skulls were elongated and their skin black or blackish-brown, taking on a sort of wrinkled, leathery consistency. We can assume the rest of their bodies also appeared the same, although we cannot confirm that as of yet.

Wrinkled eyelids engulfed their small, solid black eyes. Their pronounced brows gave way to a sharp ridge running down the middle of their face that ended in a forward-facing, pig-like snout. Below said snout was tucked a wide but barely visible mouth that lacked much in the way of pronounced lips. The species also possessed six, distinct, white tusks across their face, situated in a large, curved set protruding from the top of their mouth, another smaller pair slightly higher up on their snout, and the final two smallest extending from where their cheeks met their jaw. The flesh around each tusk also grew noticeably redder in coloration. They also had scraggly grayish hairs that grew the thickest on the top of their heads, but could also found around their eyebrow area as well as just above their nose. It is unclear whether or not the species could pronounce Galactic Basic, however, they could produce a squealing noise.

Lore: We currently know nothing about the Warthogs, including whether or not “Warthog” is even their true species name or not. Currently the only instance we’ve ever currently seen of the species served as a pilot for Pirate King Gorian Shard for sometime during the New Republic’s reign, although we have yet to see any throughout the galaxy prior to this era.

Continuity: The Warthogs currently only exist within Star Wars Canon.

Unexplored: Very few species are more deserving of the answer “everything” for this section of an article than this one. We’re not going to get into any specifics for now, and instead just cover the basics of what is needed to help make them a more viable race for use within the Star Wars universe. Questions to pose to help with this endeavor include: Where did the Warthogs originate from, what was the name of their homeworld, what sort of species did they evolve from, what on their home planet caused them to evolve in such a manner, and what did they refer to themselves as (as presumably it wasn’t Warthog)? On that note, is Warthog 100% their official species name, or just an in-universe nickname or even just behind-the-scenes production name used for temporary means? When was the species first discovered, and why have we seen so few of them out among the galaxy up until this point?

What sort of intergalactic allegiances did they have, and was their history one of peace, or one riddled with conflict and civil wars? How advanced were they by the collapse of the Republic, and were they members of the Republic and represented within the Senate, or did they remain neutral, relatively undiscovered, or even allied with the CIS or other anti-Republic factions? Were they ever affected by any other major wars or intergalactic groups? And was it possible more of them were allied with the Pirate Nation (or other pirate factions or conglomerates), or was Gorian Shard’s late helmsman an isolated case among his people? Exploring the answers to these questions, as well as other general worldbuilding concepts such as the species political system and governments, architecture and arts, societies and civilizations, reputations and influences, economy and exports, languages and diets, religions and philosophies, and traditions, habits, or cultural practices, will help us develop a truly special species here!

Additional Notes: This is such an interesting case, and I actually held off on writing this article for quite some time as I’d rather not have to go through and change things if their name ends up not actually being Warthog, which I still have a sneaking suspicion may end up happening. Still, I’ve waited for quite a while with no news or indication that we’ll be getting any anytime soon, so I thought why not go ahead and create the framework for an article anyway. Although the design is pretty basic, there’s something fairly fun and campy about it that makes me want to see more of them in the future! (I also like the possible implication that the clone pilot “Warthog” derived his name and helmet design, not from a vicious and wild beast, but from a race of dudes with funny heads.)
