Biology: Moggonites were a gremlin-like bipedal sentient mammal species. Standing approximately .5 meters tall on average when fully grown, Moggonites had pudgy builds but were usually still light enough for most Humans to lift off the ground. The species had lumpy skin that was usually pink or pinkish-orange in coloration, their hair generally being black or dark brown. Most of their body was covered in ragged patches of hair, concentrated primarily on the top and back of their head, as well as under their ears. Moggonites were known for their naturally disheveled appearance, often naturally asymmetrical, in a manner that many other species found repulsive.

They appeared to have two-toed feet and stubby legs, with rounded torsos and lumpy chests. Their hands appeared to bear three large fingers, including at least one thumb each, with sharp nails protruding from their fingertips. The species had little in the way of visible chin, instead with a rolled, hairy neck that led directly into their face. Their thin lips were cracked and craggy, with the center portion of their upper lip pointing downward, giving way to what many would describe as a crooked smile. Moggonites also had protruding brows, making their faces very expressive, with bulging white or yellow eyes and beady black pupils. Their ears were also massive, pointing out and away from the sides of their head.

Despite their usual height and weight, Moggonites were a fairly agile species with good balance, seemingly resulting from their upbringing in such harsh environments. They appeared to have good senses, especially when it came to sight and hearing, and their sharp, jagged teeth could also seemingly deal some damage. Moggonites had the capacity to pronounce Galactic Basic, while details regarding their currently unidentified native tongue remain unclear. There is currently no evidence of any Moggonite ever possessing Force Sensitivity, although there may be a more unique reason as to why than we usually see.

Moggonites had the capacity to interbreed with at least one other alien species, producing a distinct hybrid race sometimes considered a separate subspecies entirely, although they were usually just referred to as “Moggonite Hybrids.” The other species in question has never been revealed, although we know it was either a pig or dog-like species given the traits they contribute to the hybrids’ physiology, and there was a high likelihood that it was actually the Bothans, as they were known for being reproductively compatible with a fair number of non-Bothan species. Another possibility is instead the Moggonites’ neighbor species on Arorau, the Blagwahrs, a group of nondescript primitive natives that the Moggonites sometimes associated with.

The dominant traits of these hybrids were their Moggonite genes, however, as they adopted many of the same traits including their often rotund builds, wrinkles, lumps, and general hariness, as well as sporting the same hair color, approximate pigmentation, and mouth, brow, and ear structure. The most noticeable change was their size and stature, with hybrids growing upwards of 3 meters in height, a stark departure from a pureblooded Moggonite’s average frame. They could also appear in a wider variety of colors, including deep orange or reddish-pink. Other additional traits they seemed to adopt included more hair on their face and head, much smaller eyes, and the addition of a snout-like structure that was often attributed to having swine or canine characteristics. Moggonite Hybrids also usually had five-fingered hands, and were incredibly muscular, backing their appearance up with displays of immense strength.

Lore: The Moggonites of Arorua were galaxy-famous for being an unpleasant, untrustworthy, and ungrateful species. Despite this reputation, they were actually a fairly uncommon sight outside of their homeworld, remaining fairly isolated throughout their entire history. The primary exception came to their hybrid offspring, most of which were found offworld and spread out among the furthest reaches of known space. Moggonite Hybrids were not as naturally unsavory as their Moggonite parents, although they still bore some traits and were often seen partaking in criminal activities. Moggonites did not believe in the concept of loyalty, instead letting their greed and desire to benefit themselves drive their every decision, leading to the constant forming and dissolving of alliances.

This mindset was not completely baseless, however, as their homeworld had a storied and troubled history since the earlier days of the civilized universe. Around 27,700 BBY, when the Rakatan Empire drove the early Sith species off of their homeworld of Korriban (later renamed Pesegam and then Moraband), while many fleeing Sith took up residence on Ziost, a smaller but still sizable group of refugees would arrive on Arorua, claiming it as a new Sith colony. They dwelled here for an indeterminable amount of time, although presumed to be millennia, folding the world into the earliest iterations of the Sith Empire until their reach began to diminish.

During this time, Arorua became host to a number of dangerous Sith experiments, changing the very nature of the planet itself. The world was designated a “breeding ground” for various early Sithspawn, creatures, often amalgamations of multiple existing flora and fauna, enhanced and mutated with Dark Side sorcery and alchemy to produce monstrosities that were immense in both size and ferocity. While many of these species were eventually shipped offworld to be utilized as Sith Warbeasts, many were left on the world, abandoned and left to their own twisted devices when the Sith presence was all but removed. It is unclear when the Moggonites developed into a sentient race, but they were never mentioned during any descriptions of the Sith’s time on Arorua, so it was presumably some time after.

This means that, by the time the Moggonites had begun to establish any sort of communities or civilizations, they were already forced to survive against countless horrors patrolling the rain forests that covered the majority of their homeworld. This made the species gruff, tough, and self-reliant by birth, learning how to outwit the Sithspawn that had since made themselves part of the planet’s native fauna, such as the Silan, a fleshy abomination covered in tentacles and toothy maws, as well as the much more common Squollyhawlks, massive snake-like insectoids bearing false humanoid faces on their foreheads and impressive bodily camouflage used to draw sentients in before tearing them to shreds using their large mandibles and jaw.

Despite the odds, the Moggonites would persevere, developing primitive civilizations throughout the planet’s jungles and even taming some of the smaller wildlife, utilizing smaller featherless avian-like creatures as mounts. The species became fairly proficient hunters, despite their small stature, using bow and arrows as well as melee weapons to forage and survive. Eventually, a second species on the planet would also develop sentience, known as the Blagwahrs, who took up residence among the planet’s few mountains. Little is known about this second race outside of the fact that they were considered even more primitive than the Moggonites during the modern age of the galaxy, and that they had grown to worship the Sith, their influence left behind on the planet, and the entities they had spawned. The Moggonites knew of their existence, although we have never learned how much the two species interacted or what their views on eachother were.

At some point prior to the end of the Old Republic era, the Galactic Republic came across this world nestled within the Outer Rim, and shortly thereafter the Moggonites began to sparsely integrate into the greater galaxy. They quickly gained their negative reputation, unable to accept concepts like benevolence or generosity, and going above and beyond to make themselves as repulsive as possible. This is when the Moggonite Hybrids also began to first appear, taking up residence on planets like Tatooine. Shortly before the Clone Wars, the Jedi Order had a run-in with the Moggonites (and Sithspawn) on Arorua when the famed Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi visited the world. Despite attempting to help a local, they were eventually betrayed and ambushed by other members of the species. It is unclear if they ever faced any sort of retaliation or disciplinary action from either the Jedi or Republic for this event.

Legends/Canon: The Moggonites originated in Legends, where all of the above lore comes from, although they have been mentioned once (in name only, of course) within Canon. Canonically, the only things we know about them is that they had been discovered at least by some time between the events of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones although probably much earlier, and that they retained their general abhorrent nature. While much of their lore above could be canonized, there are some dates and elements related to Arorua’s relation to the Sith that would need to be changed to accommodate some updated lore.

Unexplored: There’s already a fair bit of lore here, despite their relatively few appearances throughout the EU (with hybrids quite possibly appearing more than the full-on members of their species). They’re also readily available for exploration in a different direction within Canon, so for this section we’ll ask a few questions regarding possible changes to their lore, before asking others that take what’s been established into consideration. Receiving answers to the following questions would help better characterize the species overall, as well as serve as a jumping point for establishing individual Moggonite or Moggonite Hybrid species within your own works.

So for starters, what exactly of their lore could, should, and will be transferred from the EU into Canon, and how much is better left behind? Do they still have indirect or direct ties with the Sith? Do they still canonically hold as severe of a reputation among the entire galaxy, and are they still as secluded as we’ve previously observed? Were they ever involved in any major conflicts, and would we see them ally with factions such as the Nihil, Republic, CIS, New Republic, etc.? Are Moggonite Hybrids still commonplace, if a concept at all, and what would be the other species that they could breed with?

Moving on to questions assuming that most, if not all of their established lore remains intact (and based off of the previous question), were the species they were compatible with the Bothans (which may or may not even be a species in Canon), the Blagwahrs or something else? Is it possible the Moggonites ever encountered the Sith, when did they first develop sentience, and is it possible that the Sith may have actually had a hand in their development as a species (whether through sorcery or just advancements or knowledge)? What were their thoughts on the Sith? Were there loyalists among the Mogganites, possibly even Mogganite Sith Lords popping up throughout history, did they maybe only hold a passing curiosity regarding Arorua’s previous inhabitants, or did they despise them for plaguing their planet with terrors that cursed their existence from the start?

When were the Mogganites first discovered, and how long did it take for them to gain a poor reputation? Did they develop any intense rivalries or grudges with other specific species? And did they ever go to war? How unified were they across their homeworld, and what was the ratio of members on Arorua versus those dwelling offworld? What sort of relationships did they have with their neighbor race, the Blahwahrs? Were they ever punished by the Republic for their treatment of the Jedi duo? And would the Empire later arrive to put them in their place if not? Exploring the answers to all of these questions, as well as the many general worldbuilding traits we usually discuss including additional concepts such as their economies, politics, advancements, religions, philosophies, habits, traditions, diets, languages, etc. will give this species the edge they need to be truly memorable (as will knowing exactly what they look like within Canon)!

Additional Notes: This species has been on my radar for forever, but I’m glad I finally took the time to look more into their lore as it’s surprisingly unique and fascinating. I wish we had received a tad more direct history surrounding the species, but I’m glad we now have the chance to rediscover everything and more in Canon. I also kind of enjoy how this species has a reason for being dislikable (at least to an extent), and aren’t just nasty for the sake of being nasty like the Huralok or the Galderians!
