Biituian

Name: Biituian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human

Homeworld: Biitu

Coloration: Green

Biology: The Biituians were a near-Human species who we’ve seen very little of in the Star Wars galaxy so far. Being bipedal and humanoid, Biituians had the same general shape and build as the average adult Human, although they usually seemed to be on the lean side. Biituians had two arms and two legs, each with four-fingered hands and four-toed feet respectively. One of the species’ most distinctive traits was their olive green skin, which was smooth and almost completely hairless. All Biituians were bald, and did not grow facial hair either, save for brown eyebrows and eyelashes.

Their heads featured pronounced jaws, with small, flat ears, and eyes that had white sclera and seemingly solid, pupil-less irises that were blue or black in coloration (although at least a few did seem to have blue irises AND black pupils). Biituians were capable of speaking Galactic Basic, although it was usually in a broken manner, and they seemingly preferred to communicate in their own native tongue also known as Biituian, which was spoken very quickly. Biituians appeared to usually live on a herbivorous diet, most consisting of fruits, vegetables, and breads, and they were a very fit species, possessing little visible body fat. While not outwardly muscular, they were naturally strong and agile, and were surprisingly good diggers.

Lore: It would seem Biituians rarely, if ever, left their homeworld of Biitu, and apparently found no reason logical to. Biitu itself was a lush world covered in forests and fields, perfect for agriculture, as well as just being a nice, quiet place to settle down. Biituians lived in small farming villages spread across the planet’s surface and seemed to only have a loose connection to the other civilizations, with no apparent global or regional government or representation among intergalactic governments. The species was not generally hostile to offworlders, although for much of their history it seems there was very little reason for anyone to stop by Biitu outside of settling or hiding out.

The Biituians were a peaceful people, with no desire for war or conflict, whether internal or otherwise. Their villages were quiet and close knit, full of cylindrical abodes made of stone and clay, various fruit and vegetable fields, and a noticeable number of small windmills. Biituians themselves lived mostly carefree lives, wearing loose-fitting, often revealing clothing on the daily. Generally said clothing was simple, almost always dull orange, yellow, tan, or brown in coloration, and they almost always wore some sort of head covering. The way they dressed generally wasn’t gaudy, although there were often a number of pieces to their garments such as belts, sashes, wristbands, leg wrapping, and partial shoes.

The one exception to their usually plain look were the jewelry pieces that some members of the species adorned. Both men and women could sometimes be seen showcasing golden chain necklaces housing large, brilliant gems of various colors. This is because Biitu was actually home to a number of valuable gems and ores, many of which were found near or on the planet’s surface. Some of these ores were especially unique in the fact that they could be processed and utilized as an efficient source of fuel. Fortunately, these fuel ores were generally overlooked by the greater galaxy, saving the Biituians from the onslaught of corrupt mining corporations and guilds. However, certain issues would arrive that would interrupt the otherwise tranquil lives of many of Biitu’s inhabitants.

Biitu was one of the “Cassandran Worlds” found within the Outer Rim, falling within Galactic Republic controlled space for some time although there is no evidence they were involved enough with the Republic to hold any representation or influence on the Republic Senate. During the Clone Wars Biitu would be introduced to quite possibly it’s very first external conflict, when the Grand Army of the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems both established presences on the world, with the CIS seemingly being the first group to recognize the untapped resource mining potential of the planet, and thus, it’s strategic importance.

Fortunately, the Battle for Biitu during the Clone Wars was mostly contained and short lived, with only a small portion of the population seemingly affected, and those who were appeared to develop a fondness for both the Jedi and the GAR thanks to their efforts, despite not approving of the war overall. Half a decade later these sentiments would be shaken as a contingent of Imperial forces invaded another portion of the world, under the command of the notorious Admiral Screed and accompanied by a fascinating sentient mechanized creature from another universe known as the “Great Heep.”

This invasion, and the unique circumstances that surrounded it, actually did significant damage to a portion of the planet’s environment and atmosphere, the Great Heep’s “moisture eater” changed the planet’s weather and consumed much of the aerial water, while it’s droid workforce helped it mine the planet and consume it’s resources, all while the Imperial soldiers oppressed the locals near the main site of the Great Heep’s invasion. Fortunately, thanks to the misadventures of the droid R2-D2 ad C-3PO, as well as members of the “Baobab Merchant Fleet,” this invasion was short lived, the Imperials were driven back, and the all-consuming Abominor was ended once and for all.

From what we know, Biituian life went mostly back to normal following this event, although the damage had been done and some of the effects of the Great Heep would have definitely been lasting. Still, the species persevered and began to recover, at least until around two decades later when the entire planet came under control of an Imperial Remnant faction, in partnership with the “Pentastar Alignment.” This was seemingly the most thorough invasion and subjugation of the planet, and the once-peaceful farmworld became a longstanding holdout for the dwindling Imperial forces. For around eight years, circa 12 ABY, this would remain true, until the world was finally liberated by the New Republic, at least as far as we’re aware.

Continuity: Existence of the Biituians have yet to be confirmed in Star Wars Canon, currently being relegated to the Expanded Universe.

Unexplored: This is one of those species that, while somewhat fleshed out in Legends, a lot of lore was implied instead of outright told given the sources they appeared in, and, of course, not being Canon means they’re a blank slate if they should ever make the transition from continuities. With that being said, we’ll start by asking a few questions under the assumption that their Legends lore is faithfully adapted, then cover a few standard worldbuilding concepts that need to be established first canonically.

Specific questions include: When were the Biituians and their homeworld first discovered, and how did they first react to meeting offworlders? Were they involved in any major intergalactic events prior to the Clone Wars? And were they ever involved with Republic politics or the Senate in any way, or is it possible they had an external representative assigned to them? What happened to the Biituians during their eight years of occupation by the Imperial Remnant, and were they still recovering from the damage done to Biitu by the Great Heep? Why were the Remnant finally driven away, was it due to direct involvement by the New Republic, the Baobab Merchant Fleet again, or some other factor, and did the Biituians ever decide to fight back in any substantial way? Were they made members of the New Republic afterwards or did they remain in a mostly neutral state, and what happened to them in the eras afterwards?

Diving into a few more less “historical” questions, how long were Biituian lifespans? Were they able to mate with other Human or near-Human species to create hybrid offspring, and wait traits would carry over? Why did Biituians always wear head coverings? What sorts of crops did they grow, and did they ever consume meat and/or hunt the various local animals? How large was the full population of Biitu? How did they acquire the various gems and ores included in their jewelry, and what was the name of the native fuel ore that so many sought after? And of course, when first establishing them in Canon, we need to solidify their origins, evolution, history, allyships, civilizations, politics and community governmental structure, economic systems, philosophies and religions, technical developments, arts and music, cultural practices, habits, and unique traditions.

Additional Notes: The Biituians are somewhat unique for a near-Human species of this caliber, and they had some interesting if sparse lore in the EU. It was really cool to see a species once exclusive to the “Droids” animated series get revisited in The Clone Wars-related media many years later, although the short comic they reappeared in is incredibly elusive and I have only currently found mention of it. Still, the Biituians seem like the perfect candidates for a species who is randomly mentioned in a novel or something (I was hoping they would appear within The High Republic, maybe even as Jedi representative during that era, but alas, that time has come and gone). Still, I definitely want to see a canonical mention of them someday, and now maybe the ever-expanding New Republic era would be the perfect place to feature them, given all that’s been established before!
