Biology: Reesarians are a humanoid species with a number of Human or near-Human traits. They had a nearly identical body shape/build, with the same type and number of limbs, as well as average height, weight, and proportions. This is sort of where the similarities end, however, as the Reesarians are in no way a Human-passing species. The species had maroon skin that was wrinkled and veiny. Because they have only ever been seen wearing heavy clothing, we’re not sure of any other anatomical traits from the neck down.
Reesarians had large heads, with thick, wrinkled necks, and scrunched facial features. They had large foreheads and pronounced brows, with sunken, beady eyes that possessed bright blue sclera. They had small, upturned noses that showed their nasal cavities. Their mouths were small and downturned naturally, with very little pronounced lips. Reesarians had point cheekbones and cleft chins. They also had large, semi-front-facing ears. And they possessed thick, orangish-red hair that was very similar in color to their skin, which seemed to grow in matted strands.
Reesarians were primarily known for their enhanced and attuned senses such as a very sensitive sense of smell, extreme sense of hearing, and impeccable eyesight. Reesarians could see a wide spectrum of light, including the ability to perceive both ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths. This gave Reesarians a number of valuable traits and strengths that other species wished to take advantage of. Reesarians also had the ability to essentially “soul bond” with their partner, an ability possibly related to the Force, which, while still rather mysterious, allowed them to become in sync, sharing mindsets, emotions, and potentially even senses, stimulus, and/or pain.
Lore: Little is currently known about the Reesarians, and it doesn’t seem as though they are currently in a rush to explore them more in-depth, however, we do, at the very least, know that the species hailed from the planet Reesaria, located within the notorious Outer Rim territory known as “The Slice.” Reesarians appear to be a monogamous species, bonding for life with their mates through marriage. It seems that they suffered at the hands of the First Order and potentially even the Empire, with some of them putting their skills to good use, serving as scouts and elite soldiers for the Resistance.
Legends/Canon: The Reesarians and their homeworld are a relatively new species, exclusive to Star Wars Canon and introduced in 2019 and 2022 respectively.
Unexplored: So there’s still quite a bit here that remains to be explored! While we know of their homeworld, we really don’t know what it’s like. What possible environment of evolutionary history could have resulted in their heightened senses? What was the benefit of their extreme bonding abilities, and how did Reesarian families function? There are some other questions we can ask regarding Reesarian biology including: How long did Reesarians live? Did any of their abilities stem from a heightened midichlorian count and attunement to the Force? Did their hair always grow in thick clumps, or is that just the style worn by the individuals we’ve seen so far? And were the Reesarians able to speak and easily pronounce Galactic Basic, and what was their native tongue named/like?
Additional worldbuilding questions we can ask include: When were the Reesarians first discovered by and/or introduced to the greater galaxy, and how quickly did others try to take advantage of them for their own gain? Were the Reesarians ever a part of any major galactic government or faction? What sort of traditions, religions, habits, or social practices did the Reesarians possess that set them apart from other humanoids? What sort of society, politics, philosophies, governments, economies, exports, arts, mindsets, etc. did this species hold? And how was that influenced by the greater galaxy as a whole? Were they ever caught up in major galactic conflicts? And why were there a number among the ranks of the Resistance? Answering many of these questions will give us a much greater understanding of the Reesarians, and will make them leagues more memorable than they are currently.
Additional Notes: I don’t love Reesarians, but I don’t hate them either. Compared to a lot of the Sequel species, I think they’re design is a bit uninspired, but I do enjoy their extended lore and place within the Resistance, and would really like to see that fleshed out further someday. I think the species could easily be brought back in future live action projects, and their design makes them relatively simple to illustrate either within an animated series or comic! I have high hopes for the future of this species, especially within properties like The High Republic, and can’t wait to see what Star Wars does with them next! (In fact, right after I wrote this, the species was featured within “The High Republic: Path of Vengeance,” although we didn’t really gain any additional lore from it.)
