Hassarian

Name: Hassarian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Beast (Camelidae)

Homeworld: Hassaria System

Coloration: Pink

Biology: Hassairns are a bipedal llama-like species found throughout the Star Wars galaxy. They were generally humanoid, possessing two legs and two arms, although they were incredibly thin or “willowy,” with overall wiry frames. Hassarians were covered in a thick layer of fur that was described as being vibrantly “lilac” in coloration, although certain portions could also contain various splashes of blue, especially at the tips of their fur. Hassarians had long, five-fingered hands with blue or black pointed fingernails.

They possessed elongated, almost equine-shaped heads, with longer fur on their chin and top of their head than anywhere else on their body. Hassarians had flat nostril openings located at the tip of their snout. They also had rounded mouths with sharp, often snaggled white teeth. Hassarian eyes could possess bright blue irises, although it’s unclear whether these irises could also be other colors or not. They had long ears that hung out and down along their head, not ever extending straight up even when a Hassarian was suspended upside-down. Hassarians responded well to the healing effects of Bacta, although they were considered a relatively weak species overall. They also had the capacity to pronounce Galactic Basic.

Lore: Little is still known about the Hassarian people, although we are still learning more and more about them in current media. From what we have learned recently, the Hassarians were already well known in the galaxy by the height of the High Republic era, possessing an infamous rivalry with another species known as the Skembo, going as far as to engage in bloody conflicts with them. They were considered members of the Galactic Republic at this time, although their actions were seemingly tolerated very little and some of not all of the species eventually grew disillusioned with the Galactic Government.

By the start of the Clone Wars, the Hassarians were heavily associated with the Separatist Movement, even producing one of their great military leaders. Hassarian radicals would lead a multifront campaign against the Republic as well as the Skembo (who may or may not have also still been members of the Republic) during the war, although by the time of the ride of the Galactic Empire, many Hassarians had fallen on hard times, with some becoming criminals, while others became indebted to groups such as the Hutt Empire. While we know they hailed from the Hassaria System, we have yet to learn the name of their homeworld within it.

Legends/Canon: The Hassarians did originate within Star Wars Legends, but only in name. This is also where we learned that they came from the Hassaria System. However, they were eventually introduced into Canon via media within The High Republic, first only receiving a description within a novel, although after 26 years, we have now officially been given our first illustrations within a comic book. Given this attention, and the inclusion of all the establishing lore above, I expect they will continue to be fleshed out in the coming months/years. (The Hassaria System still remains uncanonized).

Unexplored: While they are finally getting some lore, there is still left to be known about this lilac species. There are a few general questions we need answered about them, such as where they originated from, what caused their conflict with the Skembo, why they joined the Separatists, and what happened to them under the oppressive reign of the Empire. However, we also just need more info about general concepts such as their evolutionary origins, history, galactic contributions, alliances, government, economy, society, cultural practices, philosophies and religions, technologies and exports, arts and traditions, habits, languages, unique anatomical and biological traits, and involvement regarding major galactic events or eras as well.

Additional Notes: I think the out-of-universe origins of this species are just so cool, and I hope other obscure Legends species can eventually get the same treatment within The High Republic, or any other Canon media to be honest! The design remains fairly unique, species associated with the CIS are instantly fascinating, and if the progression of their appearances continue, we could even see them in an animated series or potentially live action project in the foreseeable future!
