“Immortal Devotion: The Spiral” – Chapter 0 (1/1)

A journey is always better with friends.

Time and time again, we’ve seen bands of compatriots take on trials, expeditions, and galactic threats and come out victorious. Gangs, posses, and crews; it’s all the same. From the crews of the Outrider, Ghost, Harbinger, Melos Marauder, or even the legendary Millennium Falcon, these journeys, and the trailblazers that forged them, have stood the test of time, and have gone down in history for the bravery, perseverance, and comradery forged in each of their heroic endeavors. My… our story is like that in many ways. However, my crew and I never received fame, glory, or or any sort of galactic recognition, and our legacy will perhaps be forever lost when the last of us passes on into the great expanse.

We formally assembled three years before the momentous Battle of Yavin, the turning point of the age, and while some of us were around to witness the downfall of the current Empire, many of us did not live to share in the revelries. We weren’t what you would call “heroes.” Or maybe we were? We most definitely were not villains by any stretch of the term, but we did what we thought was best for our crew, and the galaxy came second… for a time. On many of these occasions, our end goals and the betterment of the universe were aligned, but when they weren’t, we still faced any trouble that came our way from anyone and anything head on.

Together.

I miss the crew. I really do.

We’ve shared a bond tested by both callous war and deafening peace. And I believe that bond has remained true. Strained, but never broken. Thinking about these adventures is bringing back as many unpleasant memories as pleasant ones. I have long given up my ability to weep, but I will never forget those countless nights of feeling nothing but utter emptiness and loss. After time, you really do start to go numb, and you long to feel again. I… want to feel again. And maybe retelling the story of my crew, the crew of legendary, immortal Devotion, the place I called my home, will bring back some of those feelings.

Will you join me for one last journey?

(Our time together aboard the Devotion was defined by three very different and dramatic events. This first event or era is what I like to call… The Spiral.)
