Biology: Poobas are a small, bear-like species introduced into the Star Wars universe fairly recently. They stood between .8 and 1 meter tall on average, with a stocky build and the same number of limbs as the average humanoid. They possessed rounded feet, with dark pads on the bottom indicating four toes, one sole, and one heel per foot, although these were ill-defined in the foot’s overall structure. They also possessed four stubby fingers per hand, each of which lacked visible fingernails of claws. Nearly the entire body of a Pooba was covered in a thick layer of blue fur. The fur varied in shade, growing darkest around their feet and ears, while lightening on their face and turning white around their nose.
Poobas had large rounded heads with enormous features. Their bulbous eyes featured white sclera, blue irises, and black pupils. Their massive ears were pink and fleshy on the inside while furry on the outside, seemingly giving them an enhanced sense of hearing. Their noses were small and purplish-pink. And their mouths were wide, with young Poobas only possessing four teeth, two one top and two on bottom, all widespread and potentially a type of canine tooth. The species was said to have strong senses of smell and hearing, especially sensitive to high-pitched sounds. It is unclear whether or not Poobas can pronounce Galactic Basic, but their native raspy, growling language was known as “Poobian.” The only known Pooba instance we have seen so far has been Force Sensitive, but we cannot yet say for sure whether or not they are the baseline or an outlier.
Lore: We have yet to learn really anything about the Poobas as of yet, aside from the fact that they were discovered by the Galactic Republic sometime during or prior to the High Republic Era, they do wear full clothing, and they share a strong resemblance to another species known as the Qubey.
Legends/Canon: The Poobas are technically a species exclusive to Canon thanks to the Jedi character Nubs. However, their only appearance so far (and potentially ever) is in the “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” series created essentially for toddlers. I don’t expect a lot of lore or continuity to come from the show, nor do I see the characters being carried over to other media, which is why I am skeptical regarding the Pooba’s overall inclusion within Canon. Still, we can’t deny that they do fall within official continuity, so regardless of if any other projects decide to use the species, that does have to count for something.
Unexplored: Since we know so little about this species, it would be best to simply explore the world building basics for now. I frequently list them in nearly every article on this site, but they include things like a species’ homeworld, level of development, politics, history, traditions, and other traits like that. We can technically dive into a few more in-depth questions such as whether or not all Poobas are Force Sensitive, or whether Nubs is just an outlier. However, I would like to reserve a lot of these questions until “Young Jedi Adventures” has finished airing in its entirety. In truth, I really don’t plan on watching the show, but I’m sure some fans will and they can relay any additional lore to me!
Additional Notes: This species definitely exists, and while I don’t think it’s the most creative design in the world, I do like the color gradient and I think it will be very appealing to children. I can see this species becoming a fan favorite among the youngest generation of fans, or even potential fans whose parents or caretakers simply put the show on to entertain. That means that we could have a generation of Star Wars enthusiasts who claim the Poobas as one of their favorite species due to nostalgia, which makes the documentation of them now all-the-more important! Ultimately, this species exists in a very weird place, and I still wonder why Nubs didn’t just end up being an Ewok or Qubey (aside from the color limitations I suppose). But I am interested to see the future of the Poobas, and if they will end up becoming a common species within Canon, or if they will simply be lost to obscurity after the show reaches its conclusion.
