Classification: Alternative/Giant
Homeworld: Orooturoo
Coloration: Pink and Purple
Biology: Orooturooians were a massive, slug-like sentient species found occasionally throughout the Star Wars galaxy. They could grow well over 10 meters in length from head to tail, standing over 3 meters tall while the rest of their bodies trailed off behind them, often completely out of sight. While they possessed no legs, they did have a number of small tentacles that grew from the sides of their body, all the way from the tip of their tail to the top of their head, potentially assisting in locomotion. Orooturooians had thick, mucousy skin that was varying shades of pink or purple, sometimes possessing symmetrical yellow markings on their back and head. Individuals could also have either two or four arms that were tentacle-like and ended in two hooked fingers.
Orooturooians possessed no true neck, with a massive, rounded, bald head. They had incredibly wide mouths with pronounced lips and jaws filled with razor sharp teeth. They had flat, upturned noses and a strong sense of smell. Their wrinkled, extended brow gave way to large eyes that often sported red pupils and black irises and sclera. On the back and side of their head they either sported a few lone, long tentacles or a plethora of short, fleshy knobs, both of which acted like faux hair. Orooturians had voracious appetites and could swallow 2 meter tall creatures whole, meaning they had no problem consuming other sentient species. Orooturooians had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic, and were believed to be a distant relative of the infamous Hutt species.
Lore: Not much has truly been revealed about the Orooturooians. We know they hailed from the planet Orooturoo which was located within the Core Worlds. This planet was a popular hub for travelers and smugglers as it served as the end point for multiple popular trade routes. Orooturooians themselves were known for being influential within the galactic crime landscape, with all known instances being or at the very least associated with crime lords. Their world was ruled by a royal family, including the very influential Orooturooian Princess. This species had strong ties with the Hutt species and their Empire, both politically as well as potentially sharing a common ancestor. Orooturooians had some very taboo cultural practices, at least by galactic standards, including the tradition of females mating with their husbands (regardless of species) by consuming them.
Legends/Canon: The Orooturooians are Canon, however, they do have some differing lore between both Canon and Legends. In Legends we learned about their princess and mating rituals, and while we did know their homeworld was Orooturoo, the species itself went completely unidentified. It wasn’t until Canon that the species officially received their name, although their homeworld has now yet to be confirmed (although we can still imply that it’s probably Orooturoo).
Unexplored: There is quite a bit left to be explored regarding this species, especially within the confines of Star Wars Canon. First and foremost, what amount of their Legends lore still exists within Star Wars Canon, such as their homeworld’s name, relationship to the Hutts, royal family, or strange practices. In addition, it would be great to learn more about their past as a species. Were they always associated with the galactic crime scene? What were their past interactions with the Hutts, and did they view each other favorably or in contempt? How did the Orooturooians fit into the galactic landscape, and were they ever associated with the likes of the Galactic Republic, Empire, or any other major group or faction?
What sort of political structure did the Orooturooians possess, and were they a very plentiful species, or due to their size and penchant for eating each other, were they a fairly scarce species? When were the Orooturooians first introduced to the greater galaxy? And did they create any unique technologies, space-faring vessels, weapons, or the likes? How did Orooturooian architecture develop to accommodate their large bodies, and did their size cause them to be unable to travel to many locations designed for smaller species? Exploring in-depth world building concepts such as their society, culture, economy, suite of unique traditions, languages, religions, philosophies, habits, etc. would be most beneficial. And getting some further illustrations and biological/anatomical information would also be very helpful.
Additional Notes: This is such a fascinating case! It is very rare that a random, one-off, completely unnamed species from within the vast obscurity of Star Wars Legends eventually appears in Canon and actually receives a name for the first time ever. I was blown away when I discovered this, and whether it was Landry Q. Walker or Pablo Hidalgo who chose to have this species reappear (and be named after its homeworld in Legends, no less), they deserve all the praise!
