Name: Imzig
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Near-Human
Homeworld: Couronne
Coloration: Tan and Blue
Biology: The Imzigs were a Near-Human species that were seen occasionally throughout the Star Wars galaxy. They were considered an “offshoot” of baseline Humans, although they did sport more physical distinctions of other Human offshoots. Most noticeably, they had prominent facial bones. This gave them elongated craniums and receding hairlines, large boney foreheads, extended brows, and large eyelids. They could also have curly brown hair, among potentially other colors and textures natural to Humans, and they lacked eyebrows. They also had slightly enlarged ears and noses. In addition to these facial features, Imzigs also had pale skin with a blue hue and sporadic darker blue patches. But aside from this, they shared the same general height, build, and anatomy as that of average Humans, as well as being able to naturally pronounce Galactic Basic.
Lore: Little was ever revealed about the Imzigs. We were only told that they were native to the planet Couronne located within the Expansion Region. They were a rich, reclusive species ruled by a High King who possessed an elite security force known as the “High King’s Guard.” Shortly prior to or during the Galactic Civil War era, Couronne’s political unrest rose to a breaking point, resulting in a violent coup that dethroned the current High King and turned the planet’s entire political system on its head. Some of the High King’s Guard managed to escape and spread out across the galaxy, going into hiding by assuming other similar professions such as Cloud City’s Wing Guard Security Force. Aside from that, however, very little was ever known about this secluded, Human-adjacent species.
Legends/Canon: Despite technically existing in live action, being created specifically for “Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back,” the Imzigs were cut from the film and thus missed out on making their way into official Star Wars Canon. Despite being currently relegated to Star Wars Legends media, their homeworld of Couronne is officially Canon, meaning there is hope for its inhabitants to be canonized as well!
Unexplored: There is clearly a lot that we never learned about the Imzigs. When were they first discovered, and did they evolve from a long separated race of Humans? How did they fit into the greater galaxy, and what sort of allegiances or relationships did they have? Were they entirely independent and isolationist, or did they have strong ties to collectives such as the Republic, CIS, New Republic, etc.? How were the Imzigs affected by the rise of the Empire, and did they have any influence over the coup that took place around that time? What transpired to lead up to that climatic event, and was this out of the norm or were the Imzig used to political unrest? What happened to all of the surviving guards? And what happened on Couronne following this event? Finally, were there any general details regarding their history, society, culture, economy, philosophies, religions, customs, traditions, habits, biology, relationships, arts, etc. that were unique enough to set them apart from other Near-Humans?
Additional Notes: This is a very interesting case, as there are only a few species that I can think of that got their starts within deleted scenes from films! I would really like to see them, and specifically the Wing Guard Security Force member Utris M’Toc, pop up in something like the upcoming Lando Calrissian show or some other piece of Canon media that has to do with Lando, Lobot, or even just Cloud City. If we could even see more of Couronne, and get the Imzigs referenced within The High Republic, I would be more than excited! It definitely feels like the type of small, obscure Legends detail that they would feature!
