Name: Condluran
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Beastite (Rodentia)
Homeworld: Unknown
Coloration: Brown, Tan, and Pink
Biology: Condlurans were a species of sentient bipedal rodents resembling an anthropomorphized version of the real world the star-nosed mole. They stood between 1.5 and 1.8 meters in height, with the same approximate weight and build as that of the average Human. They were almost completely hairless, with wrinkled, leathery, dark brown skin that grew pinker towards the front of their face. Some Condlurans did have stray, singular hairs growing from any random portion of the body, possibly sprouting up specifically when not well groomed. Condlurans possessed five-fingered hands, each sporting large, thick claws.
Their heads were rounded, with an elongated snout. At the end of this snout was a flat nose and wide mouth surrounded by an array of approximately fourteen small, fleshy beard-like growths, eight above their mouth and five to six below. They sported massive incisors on both their upper and lower jaws, with small, widely spaced, pointed teeth flanking them on each side. Condlurans also had a pronounced underbite, displaying their lower incisors even when their mouth was completely closed.
This species had small eyes with large black pupils, and rows of three small, fleshy spines in place of eyebrows. Their small ears were held flush against their heads, exposing their rounded aural cavities. Despite the unconventional shape of their mouths, Condlurans could pronounce Galactic Basic with relative ease. It is also believed that they possessed superior eyesight, especially in low light conditions, but that detail has yet to be fully reinforced.
Lore: Little is currently known about the Condlurans within the Star Wars universe. At least one was found on the planet Mapuzo, and while it would be fitting for a mole species to be native to a mining colony, we still have no confirmation regarding this detail as another took up residence on Jedha. It appears that at least some Condlurans actually readily welcomed the Galactic Empire, tolerating forms of oppression as it provided them with stability, something that they had apparently lacked under the Galactic Republic. Generally the Condlurans appeared to be viewed with a sense of disdain, and were known for being shifty and untrustworthy within certain circles. They had been discovered and introduced into the galaxy by the start of the High Republic era, though how fa back as yet to be determined.
Continuity: The Condlurans are a species exclusive to Star Wars Canon, being one of a few new species to originate from the Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series, before beginning to appear in additional extended media like “The High Republic” later on.
Unexplored: There are some hints towards greater lore surrounding the Condlurans, but little that has actually been fleshed out or confirmed. If we should see them further in the future, here are some questions that, if answered, would really help define the Condlurans and their place among the Star Wars galaxy. First off, where exactly do the Condlurans come from? Are they native to Mapuzo or maybe one of its neighboring mining colonies, or were they possibly shipped to different worlds as a work force on behalf of the Empire? Was the individual, Freck, we saw in Obi-Wan Kenobi a good indication of his species overall mindset during the Galactic Civil War, or was he more of an outlier? Did they all embrace the Empire, and to what extent were the Condlurans oppressed by the regime?
Going in a more general direction, what was Condluran society and culture like prior to and following the Galactic Empire’s rise to power? What sort of governmental systems and structures did they possess? What was their economy like, and did they have any particular exports, especially related to mining? Did they have unique architecture, and were they a subterranean species as their design would suggest or have they long since taken residence above ground? Did they have any notable biological/anatomical traits that we have yet to learn about? And, of course, did they have any other unique philosophies, religions, arts, languages, habits, traditions, or other cultural practices that would help to further set them apart from other sentient species?
Additional Notes: At a first glance, these anthropomorphic moles don’t seem all too special, but given Freck’s relative prominence within an episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi (and the memes that sprung up regarding he and the species almost immediately afterwards), they did attain quite a bit of notoriety and are more memorable than a design like this would normally warrant. After the Tostonians, the Condlurans were only the second new species from the show to receive an official name (there have been more since), and it honestly took quite a while even to get that, so I can imagine any additional lore may be a while in the making. Still, I do hope we get some additional information soon as that would be incredibly helpful in further understanding the inner workings of a species with a lot innate questions surrounding them!
