Aloxian

Name: Aloxian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human/Alternative

Homeworld: Zav Alox

Coloration: Blue-Gray

Biology: The Aloxians were a humanoid species who shared the same general shape, build, and most anatomical traits as many Human or near-Human species, although, on average they were slightly shorter, averaging out at around 1.2 meters in height (though some were seen as tall as 1.5 meters). They had dark bluish-gray skin with black stripes on certain portions of their body such as their cheeks, as well as long silver hair growing exclusively from the middle top portion of their head and upper jawline. They also had five-fingered hands with long, claw-like fingernails (as well as what appeared to be three-toed feet). Aloxians had flat faces with wide noses, eyes with red, brown, or gray irises, black cheek stripes, pronounced, hairless brows, and fan-like growths extending up and out from the top of their head with small, circular ears perched beneath. These large growths would only seem to develop around the time Aloxians reached adolescence, and infants/young had much rounder heads.

Aloxians had surprisingly innate strength, despite their thin frames, and were known for being naturally violent or aggressive, an ingrained trait that needed time, focus, and training to overcome. Psychologically, this could also be artificially overcome by placing a bone helmet on young Aloxians practically from birth, though if these helmets shattered their rage would suddenly be unleashed. Aloxians found it very difficult to pronounce Galactic Basic, and usually preferred to speak their own language, also called “Aloxian.” Aloxian lifecycles were said to be “complex,” maturing faster than the average species but also having longer lifespans, though we have yet to learn just how old they can get. They also had, at the very least, average natural Midi-chlorian levels, if not slightly above average, as a number had been recorded among the Jedi Order.

Lore: The Aloxians were native to the desolate world of Zav Alox, and were well known by but not a part of the Galactic Republic by the time of the High Republic era. They were infamous galaxy-wide for being an incredibly aggressive race of fairly primitive warriors, and had long-since become the target of various galactic slavers. These slavers would kidnap young Aloxians before they had fully developed their immense strength and violent attitude, turning them into brutal child soldiers or gladiators that could fetch quite the price on the black market. Few efforts had been put in place to halt the trafficking of young Aloxians, though the issue had at least been acknowledged by denizens of the Republic and was seemingly less prevalent by the start of the Clone Wars.

On Zav Alox, the Aloxians often entered into small, feudal civil wars which could never quite reach an official end simply due to their aversion to rationally reason and come to a compromise. Because of this, many Aloxians grew up without even understanding the concept of peace. Their rocky planet was also home to the deadly Vonduun Crabs, which preyed upon the planet’s other fauna and natives, hypothesized to be the reason the Aloxians evolved to be strong and aggressive in the first place. As a coming of age ritual, Aloxians were sent to kill a Vonduun Crab and adorn their head with its skull. These skulls would actually help temper a wearer’s anger thanks to a strange philosophical placebo phenomenon. However, when an Aloxian had grown large enough, their head would break through the shell, releasing their unbridled anger once again. This meant that younger Aloxians were actually a tribe’s decision makers, and they could rarely maintain an official governmental system.

Aloxians placed a strong emphasis on individualism and finding oneself, and the shattering of their ornamental skulls symbolized the becoming of who one was truly meant to be. Younger Aloxians dreaded this day, however, as their skulls were an object of absolute comfort to them and usually their most valuable possession. Aloxians who had been taken and raised offworld could easily be molded and taught how to quell their anger, as seen with the multiple Aloxians among the Jedi Order. The species as a whole also seemed to have a unique spiritual connection to the Force, although whether they have elevated midi-chlorians levels is yet to be seen. The Jedi kept a close eye on the Aloxians, but unfortunately chose to rarely intervene as far as we’re aware.

Continuity: The Aloxians are exclusive Star Wars Canon, introduced early into the “The High Republic” multimedia initiative.

Unexplored: Given how new the Aloxians are to the Star Wars universe, there’s still quite a bit about them that needs to be expanded upon. Answering some of the following questions can help flesh out this species even more than they have been so far. What is/was the entirety of Zav Alox like? We’ve seen brief glimpses of it, but what is the history of this planet, what sorts of environments does it bear, what sort of flora and fauna can be found there, and was it involved in any major galactic events or catastrophes? When were the Aloxians first discovered? And was it by the Galactic Republic, criminals and slavers, or someone else? How advanced were the Aloxians according to galactic standards during various eras? And what is the exact reason as to why they are not ever seen represented within the Republic Senate?

How does the Aloxian tribal system work, and what sorts of rituals do they have outside of the coming of age Vonduun Crab hunt? What sort of philosophies accompany their violent tendencies, and how do they justify their rage-fueled lifestyles? What do Aloxians think of outsiders, and what do offworld Aloxians think of their homeworld brethren? How many young Aloxians have been kidnapped and enslaved throughout history? And why do we see so few of them by the start of the Clone Wars? Were the Aloxians themselves (or any outside forces) actively fighting against these raiders? And how were these criminals able to so easily infiltrate the brutal Aloxian ranks and kidnap their children? Finally, did the Aloxians have any other unique beliefs, religions, traits, arts, products, exports, etc. that could further set them apart among the already crowded Star Wars universe?

Additional Notes: I love the Aloxians and what they’ve done with them so far! Being one of the first unique species used to help promote the High Republic, primarily through the new and lovable Jedi, Qort, I couldn’t help but add this species to my list of favorites. As they continue to expand their unique lore, I find myself wanting to see more and more of them, which I am pretty confident we will. I’m also not the first to say this, but their skull helmets do remind me of the design of the fan favorite Legends Sith Lords, Darth Krayt, which is always a plus in my book. Overall, I think the Aloxians are a great addition to the Star Wars universe, and I was super excited when they introduced us to yet another Aloxian Jedi, the adorable Jedi Initiate Zint!
