Biology: The Fluggrians were a diminutive amphibious species found occasionally within the Star Wars galaxy. They had squat, rounded bodies with slimy green skin and tan patches on their arms and stomach. Fluggrians stood between 1.2 and 1.5 meters in height, with a naturally slouched posture. They had stubby limbs with perpetually bent joints. They also had long, two-toed feet as well as three-fingered hands, each sporting long, sharp, purple talons. Fluggrians had enlarged abdomens that extend forward between their legs. They also had wrinkled chests, and a noticeable lump on their upper backs.
Fluggrians had enlarged heads, with a protruding chin and large, pink lips. Their upper lip naturally turned up, revealing two large, white upper front teeth. They also had large aural cavities on the sides of their heads, lacking true ear structures. Fluggrians had large yellow eyes with beady black pupils, these eyes partially obscured by their massive, protruding forehead growths. They also had no visible noses or nasal cavities, however, they did have small gill slits on both sides of their necks which allowed them to breath proficiently both below and above water. Fluggrians were covered in small purple spikes and intricate lines which actually served as a series of complex extrasensory organs. Fluggrians were naturally skilled swimmers but awkward walkers. They could also pronounce Galactic Basic with ease.
Lore: Fluggrians were originally native to the wet, marshy world of Ploo IV. They were actually considered a highly evolved and advanced species, developing complex floating cities and technologies, and evolving beyond the need for clothing as it inhibited the advanced sensory organs found all across their bodies. Unfortunately, the Fluggrians were also known for being disagreeable, corrupt, and notoriously xenophobic, harboring a particular hatred for their neighboring species, the Glymphids, as wel as contributing greatly to galactic crime. Fluggrians had unique styles of architecture and technology, with noticeable trademarks and doors and seats slightly too small to properly accommodate the average humanoid.
Fluggrians developed space-fairing technology fairly early on into their history. This allowed them to travel to the other Ploos and beyond. This is when they made themselves an enemy of the Glymphids. Shortly before they cracked the secrets of hyperspace technology, the Fluggrians were discovered by Republic explorers and were subsequently brought into the folds of the Galactic Republic. This era of the Republic became known as the “Subterra Period” and took place sometime during the thousand year span between 8,000 and 7,000 BBY.
During the millenia leading up to the fall of the Republic, the Fluggrians spread far out across the galaxy. They began to join many criminal organizations and empires, as well as form some of their own. Many prominent crime lords in the pre-Imperial eras were Fluggrians, and they gained a notorious reputation across the galaxy. When the Empire rose to power, they occupied Ploo IV and oppressed the Fluggrian people. This was believed to be due to their fears of the Fluggrians’ advanced technology and vessels. It is unclear whether or not the Fluggrians attempted to fight back, but they did not side with or request assistance from the Rebel Alliance.
Legends/Canon: The Fluggrians originated from “Episode I: The Phantom Menace,” which means they originated within Star Wars Legends but were made Canon by default. They did, however, receive a little bit of Legends exclusive lore including their feud with the Glymphids as well as the fact that they were subjugated at the hands of Darth Krayt’s new Galactic Empire.
Unexplored: The Fluggrian were fleshed out a lot more than most of the species created to be podracers, however, there are still some things left to be explored. How long prior to the Subterra Period did the Fluggrians develop sentience, what did evolve from, and how long were they in a primitive stage? What did their magnificent floating cities look like, and what was so unique about their technologies? What sort of unique biological or anatomical traits did they possess, and what exactly could their extrasensory spikes detect? Did the Fluggrians hold a seat on the Republic Senate? Why were they conquered by the Empire, and did they rebel? Why did they feud with the Glymphids? And did they possess any other unique traits, whether societal, political, economical, religious, traditional, etc. that make the Fluggrians distinct?
Additional Notes: There’s definitely a really fun design here! I like the little visual and lore details that they’ve given the Fluggrians, and even their and their homeworld’s names are fun to say. I could definitely see them fitting in well in a Star Wars animated series, and I’m glad they’re already been mentioned within The High Republic, so I definitely hope Star Wars continues to recognize and explore this species more in the near future. (A character belonging to a new species named the Da-vlunnian also appeared recently in The High Republic (2023) #1 and was quickly mistaken for a Fluggrian by a lot of people, myself included, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some sort of retcon was made that linked the two species.)
