Name: Shaull
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Alternative/Near-Human
Homeworld: Unknown
Coloration: Unknown
Biology: The Shaull were a humanoid species that were visually very similar to the Lowen. They had the same general height, weight, build, and anatomy as a Human or near-Human species, standing 1.6 – 1.8 meters tall on average. They had muscular bodies, with strong cores and four-fingered hands. Their skin was an unidentified bright color (presumably light blue or green), with darker colored splotches found on their arms. Shaull also had fleshy lobes hanging in random configurations along their shoulders, back, and head.
Shaulls had a number of ridges extending up from their forehead and over their head, leading into the large lobes dangling from the back of their heads. Lowen also possessed no visible nostrils or ears, although they had rather humanoid mouths and eyes. Presumably the lobes on their body were extrasensory organs that existed in place of noses and ears. The Shaull were also capable of speaking Galactic Basic.
Lore: The Shaulls were known as a curious but fearful race, the standard member of the species spending their entire lives on their undisclosed homeworld wishing they could travel the stars. Occasionally, however, a few brave Shaulls would muster enough courage to gain access to space-fairing technology and begin life as an explorer and vagabond. These Shaulls would attempt to live out the species’ ultimate life goal: experience everything in existence. Something that, despite their ultimate lifespan, they would depressingly realize they could never fully achieve.
Many of the bold Shaulls took jobs as indentured servants to grant them access offworld, although their unique adaptability to all types of technologies granted them special privileges and opportunities and pilots, engineers, mechanics, and more. These jobs would distract them from their attempts to travel, but would also grant them the funds to do so later in life, so they usually considered it a fair trade-off.
Legends/Canon: The Shaulls are exclusive to obscure media from Star Wars Legends.
Unexplored: The Shaulls were relatively mysterious as a species, as most never left their homeworld. A homeworld who’s name and location was never revealed. This means that, should they ever make their way into Canon, they will be in dire need of some expansion to their history and lore. We can start by answering some of the following questions: Where are the Shaulls from? What is their homeworld like and what caused them to evolve the way they did? When were they first discovered, and by whom? And at what point did they decide that they desired to travel among the stars?
When did they first gain access to space-faring tech? And what kept the species so scared from actually living out their dreams? Were they perhaps invaded in the past, or had they suffered at the hands of some natural, meteorological catastrophe? Or maybe they had simply been fed a bunch of tall tales by offworld travelers? What drove their natural technological prowess? And why did they often settle for indentured servitude?
Were the Shaulls ever aligned with any major galactic power such as the Galactic Republic, Rebel Alliance, etc.? And what did they think about war and politics in general? How big was the Shaull population by the Battle of Yavin? And were they well known among the galaxy for anything in particular? Did they have any unique languages, exports, arts, philosophies, religious beliefs, habits, or anatomical capabilities that made them stand out? And what was their ultimate place in the galaxy? Answering questions like these can help establish the Shaulls as their own unique species and not just a knockoff Lowen, Neti, Feeorin, etc.
Additional Notes: I almost completely overlooked this species based on their one and only illustration alone, as I honestly thought it was just a weird drawing of a Lowen, a species I wrote an article on not too long ago. Thankfully I did a double take on their name, but honestly, there is very little to go off of here outside of the lore surrounding their desire to explore, as well as their fear of it. So honestly, I really hope we do see them in Star Wars Canon, purely so they can finally receive an identity of their own. They’d be a perfect fit for the High Republic given it’s recent track record!
