Name: Carthasian
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Alternative
Homeworld: Benja-Rihn
Coloration: Green
Biology: The Carthasians were a species of green humanoids hailing from the planet Benja-Rihn. Their bodies from the neck down were approximately the same as humans, although they were varying shades of deep green in coloration. Their heads were rather large, with a segmented neck area leading straight into a beak-like mouth. The top of their head was separated from the rest, and contained hundreds of short, fleshy lobes protruding from the top, resembling short, spiky hair. Their eyes were oblong ovals that set back in their head at an angle. These eyes were bulbous and glassy, and the insides were red with pink rings surrounding the pupils. They also had the ability to speak Galactic Basic Standard with no issue.
Lore: Carthasians were famous for the many archeological wonders that dotted their planet of Benja-Rihn, especially in their capital city of Carthas. Most of the species were perfectly content living and working on their planet, and thus few were found in the outside galaxy. They collected artifacts found in ancient tombs and temples, possibly related to the old Jedi or Sith. At one point they were invaded by a mysterious race of unnamed insectoids, and would have been pushed to the brink of extinction, if it were not for the efforts of Jedi Master Mace Windu, who may or may not have been utilizing a strange form of time travel to rescue the Carthasians.
Continuity: The Carthasians only currently exist in Star Wars Legends.
Unexplored: So ignoring all of the stuff about “time travel” and them possibly going extinct before Mace Windu went and changed everything, there are still some interesting concepts to explore with the Carthasians. Who left all the temples on Benja-Rhin and why? What do the Carthasians do with all of the artifacts and structures they find? Do they try to sell them, utilize them, or just place them in museums to boost the tourism industry? Because of all of the treasure on their own planet, do some Carthasians become intergalactic treasure hunters? If they do go out into the galaxy, what do they do and how would they interact with other species?
What did they think of the Galactic Republic, the CIS, and the Clone Wars in general? Did they join the Republic and the Senate because of Mace Windu, or did they remain neutral? Why did the unidentified insectoids attack them and was it related to the artifacts? Are the insectoids a species we actually already know about? Is that a common occurrence, were the insectoids sentient or attacking instinctively, and do the Carthasians have their own defenses or weapons or do they have to rely on outside protection? Also, what did they do during the other eras, including the widespread Galactic Civil War, Cold War era, or even The High Republic? There are many good questions to ask and things to explore, and this isn’t really even mentioning concepts such as their general society, culture, history, economy, traditions, and other basic things a species usually has.
Additional Notes: Even though they’ve only made one short appearance in the Star Wars franchise, and it falls within the confines of Star Wars Legends, they still sort of surprisingly left a lasting impression. They have a very unique character design and the little bit of history and lore that exists about them is fairly interesting and unique. Of course, it’s all up to interpretation now, and you can use or ignore whatever aspects you want about the species in your fanmade media if you are a fan author or creator. But I do also wish we would see more of them in official Canon media, especially as explorers and treasure hunters, if nothing else. And just imagine them rendered as a 3D model or even a full-sized, live action costume. Hoping and praying we see that someday relatively soon!
