Barolian

Last Updated: 09/08/2025

Name: Barolian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human

Homeworld: Baroli

Coloration: Peach, Yellow, and/or Blue

Biology: The Barolians were a near-Human species found throughout the Star Wars galaxy. They were nearly indistinguishable from the standard Human, aside from their naturally blue hair, as well as their pale complexion with light tan or sometimes even almost yellowish pigmentation. Besides that, however, they had the same general height, weight, build, features, and general anatomy as Humans. They could easily pronounce Galactic Basic, and were believed to have the same general lifespan as Humans, as well as likely the potential to breed with them and produce hybrid offspring. They also had the capacity to be Force Sensitive, although any sort of high natural Midi-chlorian count has not been noted.

Lore: Little is known about the planet of Baroli or its inhabitants. It was located on the edge of the popular “Hydian Way” trade route, and while it was within Galactic Republic space, it was also considered to be well out of the way in a rather untouched portion of the Expansion Region. It was discovered as early as sometime before the High Republic era, although when it was officially brought into the fold of the Galactic Republic (and if they were ever given a seat on the Republic Senate) remains unknown. Baroli was apparently famous for its many unique moons, although further details regarding them or their relation to the Barolian people was never revealed.

The Barolians themselves were quite mysterious, often adorning themselves in ornate cloaks and tattooing their faces with various cultural symbols of unknown meanings. They also seemed to rarely travel offworld, although if they ever did, they would commonly stay away from Baroli for long periods of time. It seemed fairly easy for most Barolians to pass as Humans, which they could use to their advantage. During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Baroli was placed under their jurisdiction, although it is unclear what happened to the Barolians at that time. They would later join the budding New Republic, although again, the extent of their involvement also remains to be seen.

Continuity: Most of the lore above comes from the Barolians’ occasional appearances across Star Wars Legends media, however, they were recently Canonized in name thanks to two Barolian pilots appearing in the book “Tempest Runner” set during the High Republic era. The biggest difference between Legends and Canon Barolians is that, in the EU, Barolians were generally considered 100% Human, simply a subculture with a slightly different natural hair color. Canonically, however, they are described as a distinct species, although they are so incredibly close to baseline Humans that it probably barely matters in the grand scheme of things, most likely coming from a relatively recent divergence.

Unexplored: If you couldn’t tell from the many “remains unknown” statements above, a lot of the Barolians lore has always been a mystery. There are many aspects to explore regarding their history and place in the galaxy, and since it appears that they have remained true to their Legends roots in Canon, we can use that as a springboard to ask a few questions that would help flesh their species out as a whole! First and foremost, we still need some additional illustrations to give us a better look at a general member of the species. Do they have any unique anatomical or biological traits? Can their hair be any other colors? Did they have a heightened Midichlorian-count? And what variations of facial tattoos and patterns could they possess?

On that topic, what was the purpose of the tattoos? Was it to indicate clans and families, much like the Kiffar, or was it more like the Mirialan’s tattoos, telling their life stories and accomplishments? Why were so few Barolians found throughout the galaxy, and what did they do on their homeworld? Were they a reclusive race, or maybe they had a dwindling population? Were they a part of either Republic’s Senates, and what happened to them under the Empire? What sort of government, society, economy, and exports did they have? And did they have any other unique traits, habits, beliefs, religions, practices, etc. that would further set them apart from similar Near-Human species?

Additional Notes: There’s not a whole lot to say about the Barolians at this time. They’re fairly generic both in lore and appearance, although the story of how they continued to appear in Legends media is pretty fun. Originally they were a one-off species created for the slicer Zakarisz Ghest, but due to how surprisingly popular he seemingly became, other creators began to include the species in their works as well, including author Paul Ens, who created the Barolian Jedi Padawan Ekria, stating that Ghest had been one of his favorite Star Wars characters of all time. Whether a similar thing happened with their inclusion in The High Republic remains to be seen, however, they continue to appear across random Star Wars media and that’s good enough for me!
