Name: Moldwarp
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Reptilian
Homeworld: Unknown
Coloration: Brown and Tan
Biology: Moldwarps were a fairly humanoid species observed recently in the Star Wars galaxy, standing around the same height as the average Human and appearing to have all of the same general traits such as two arms, two legs, and one head. However they differed in a few evident regards, including their thick, scaly skin that was tan with dark brown spots. Moldwarps had fairly muscular chests as well as arms, each ending in large, three-fingered hands. Their necks were also elongated, providing them with a slight hunch when not forcing themselves to stand completely upright.
Their hands were elongated, with wide lips that wrapped all the way around their faces. Their teeth appear to be one solid construct on each side of their jaw, although they could be more bristle-like than just one large tooth. They had two massive nostrils situated on the front of their face, separated by a large crease. Their forward-facing, black or purple eyes were wrapped by wrinkled eyelids. It is believed that the Moldwarps have poor eyesight because of this, and sometimes but not always appear to wear specialized goggles. And they had hair-like tendrils extending down from the back of their head which were dark in coloration, while also sporting tufts of actual gray hair on their faces, sometimes forming moustaches or beards.
Lore: Not much is known about the Moldwarps at the current moment. One we’ve seen was a rich socialite and gambler found at the Canto Bight Casino & Racetrack, another was a dashing collector and thief alive during the High Republic, but we have no real idea of what the species as a whole was up to at any given time. The same can be said for their homeworld, which may be the Core World “Lespectus,” as that was the homeworld of at least one Moldwarp individual, Edmo Ectacle. It’s very hard to say at the moment, but still, it’s at the very least a start,.
Legends/Canon: The Moldwarps are exclusive to Star Wars Canon.
Unexplored: As with many of the TLJ “Canto Bight” species, they remain relatively unexplored, although over the past few years or so we’ve seen a lot of them starting to get highlighted in different media across Star Wars in a variety of ways. Yet, the Moldwarp has currently remained almost entirely untouched, save for a brief appearance in the High Republic show “Young Jedi Adventures” (and a few random mentions in obscure books. So some good ways to flesh them out even more is to explore the following concepts, as their design is already fascinatingly unique. First and foremost, we need to learn about their place of origin. Is it the planet Lespectus, or a new planet that we have never heard of before? And what sort of environments led the Moldwarps to evolve in the manner that they did?
What sort of governmental structure(s) did the Moldwarps support, and were they ever involved with any galactic governments such the Republic, Empire, or New Republic? Did they have any major services or exports leading to a thriving economy? And if so, was it common for Moldwarps to end up as rich as Edmo Ectacle? Did they have any unique social practices, traditions, or habits that would make them more memorable? What sort of history did they have, and when were they first discovered and integrated into the overall galaxy? And of course, what is the reasoning/origin of their bizarre name, “Moldwarp.” These are just a few of many worldbuilding questions that I would like to see explored eventually!
Additional Notes: I like this design, it reminds me a lot of some of the Legends depictions of the Noghri (which were already notoriously unreliable when it came to illustrations), especially with their elongated faces, which is lacking in the Canon depictions of the Noghri as seen in Star Wars Rebels. But still, there’s not much else to the species at the moment. With so many of these “Sequels” species making their way into the live action shows, The High Republic multimedia event, and even the recent Star Wars VR experiences, there’s still hope for the Moldwarp to make their way into the spotlight sooner rather than later. And I will continue this article as we learn more about them!
(Also, fun fact, “Mouldwarp” is a somewhat outdated term used to refer to varying mole species in real life, although it has also been used to simply indicate the idea of having “skin like a goat.” So whether or not either of those definitions were used to inspire this species’ appearance, or whether it was chosen retroactively because of said appearance, we still can’t say for sure. I don’t see many mole or goat-like features within the design, but I suppose it’s not out of the question. We’ll learn more about it as the lore surrounding their behavior, biology, and homeworld(s) continues to be revealed!)
