Homeworld: Morak

Coloration: Gray, Blue, Green, Brown, or Orange

Biology: The Shydopps are a humanoid species that have started appearing in the Star Wars galaxy as of late. They were approximately the same height and build as the average Human, possessing the same number of appendages and other general features. Shydopps had smooth, hairless skin with pigmentation that varied widely in coloration, including but not limited to varying shades of blue, green, gray, or brown. They also had varying discolored patterns on their body, oftentimes in the form of mottled spots or veiny zigzags, all of which were shades of dark red or brown.

Shydopps had muscular necks and large heads which were flanked on either side by headtail-like growths (potentially lekku) that curled around from the upper-back portion of their head and extended down to hang past the sides of their chin. These pointed offshoots were usually where the Shydopps’ patterns were most concentrated, with the jagged lines on the upper portion and the speckles towards the bottom. Shydopps had pronounced, dark-colored lips, large, flat noses, and sunken eyes surrounded by darkened wrinkles. Hidden under their prominent brows, these beady eyes usually had yellow irises and small black pupils. They also had five slightly noticeable crest-like ridges extending from their forehead to the back of their head.

Lore: Not much is known about the Shydopps overall. By the fall of the Empire, many Shydopps had taken residence on the planet of Morak, although we’re not actually sure whether or not that is their planet of origin. At least some of them had formed into a fairly competent raider faction known simply as the “Shydopp Pirates,” and spent their time attacking and stealing from the Imperial Remnant presence found on Morak. It is possible that they themselves were remnants of the Rebellion, although we also see some in New Republic custody, so their ultimate standing is unknown.

Legends/Canon: The Shydopps are exclusive to Star Wars Canon as they were introduced in the second season of The Mandalorian.

Unexplored: There’s a lot left to be desired with the Shydopp’s lore, although it is still being established as we speak. Where is the Shydopps true place of origin? Were they always native to Morak, or did certain groups simply immigrate there for a certain reason? Were most Shydopps pirates and criminals by trade, or have the instances we’ve seen been outliers to a mostly peaceful species? Were the Shydopp Pirates ex-members of the Rebel Alliance, or did they attack the Imperial Remnant simply because their mining operation was so lucrative? And why did they have the specific pieces of tech we saw them use in The Mandalorian Season 2? Were they just utilizing whatever they could find, or were those their vehicles and weapons of choice?

In addition, when were the Shydopps first discovered? Were they ever a part of the Galactic Republic, or did they remain independent? How common was it to see them out and about among the galaxy, as opposed to those dwelling on their homeworld? What sort of governmental structure did they possess, what was the root of their economy (whether export, services, piracy, or other), and what sort of traditions, habits, or societal norms did they possess? There’s still much to be established in regards to the Shydopp, but at the very least, we have more of a basis than many species, and a lot of bits of lore to bounce off of and explore!

Additional Notes: When I first saw the Shydopp (Vorg Alsum) on a screen on New Republic prisoners in The Mandalorian, it had me intrigued. Then when they appeared as an enemy force to fight against Din Djarin, I got excited about their appearance and wanted to know more. Eventually they told us the group was known as the “Shydopp Pirates,” but didn’t specify what “Shydopp” meant. I spent so much time waiting, but it FINALLY paid off when they confirmed that this species in general was known as the Shydopps. Because of this whole journey of receiving more and more clues, the Shydopps hold a special place in my heart and memory, despite not really being all that remarkable in lore or design.
