Biology: Azumels were a humanoid species found throughout the Star Wars galaxy. They had thick proportions and stood between 1.5 and 1.8 meters tall on average. Their skin was also thick and leathery, and was generally orange, yellow, red, or gray in coloration, although they could also occasionally be found in a variety of other colors, including shades of darker blue, or even rarer, a lighter blueish-green. Their entire body was covered in mottled black spots that culminated on the top of their head in a much more unified manner. Their hands were wide and boasted only four fingers. Their chins extruded outwards into two “lumps,” and out from the upper sides of their head sprouted six distinct eyestalks, consisting of three sets of two, vertically stacked above each other.

Their noses were wide and flat, and were covered by the patterned spots that appeared on the rest of the head. The eyes themselves were large and generally blue, green, or occasionally orange, with a black slit-like pupil at the center. They could move each individual stalk freely, and had a very powerful brain that could process six different points of views at once. Their mouth turned downwards naturally, and they were known for their boisterous voices. Azumels commonly spoke their native tongue, also known as “Azumel,” although they could easily pronounce Galactic Basic as well.

Lore: We know next to nothing of the Azumels, and only learned the name of their homeworld, Azum, relatively recently. However, they have popped up throughout the galaxy in essentially every single major Canon era so far, and had access to space faring technology sometime prior to the events of the High Republic, so its possible they’re one of the more established sentients in the galaxy, and not just recently discovered. It appears that they were affiliated with the greater Galactic Republic and subsequently represented on the Republic Senate, and we’ve seen at least one Azumel serving the Jedi Order, the somewhat infamous Master Cibaba.

Continuity: The Azumels only exist within the current Star Wars Canon.

Unexplored: So the first thing I think needs to be explored about the Azumels is their prominence within the Republic, especially during the High Republic and Clone Wars eras, as this will set up more of their history for later events. How were they represented within the Senate, and were they one of the species that broke away with the rest of the Separatists, did they stay closely allied with the Republic, or did they find a way to remain neutral, one way or another? From here, you can explore what happened to their species during the Galactic Civil War and subsequent eras. Though I don’t see as many similarities as I think a lot of fans do, I suppose it could also be interesting to see if they are possibly related biologically to the Gran, supporting the popular fan misconceptions and theories that have been going on for some time now based on their coloration and more-than-two eyes.

Following this train of thought, was it possible that they were a genetic offshoot of the Gran, similar to the Ottegans or Nu-Cosians, or maybe they were more a cousin species like the Harch to the Aqualish or the Jashwicks to the Sullustans? And would that make them canonically mammalian, despite possessing some almost reptilian traits? What is their home planet of Azum like? What about it caused them to evolve with so many eyes, and could it be attributed to low light environments, or maybe the need to avoid dangerous predators that swarmed from all angles? Of course, we always have to tackle the standard, general worldbuilding questions such a what does their societal structure, economy, culture, government, traditions, religions, art, habits, civilizations, allies, enemies, etc. look like, both on Azum, as well as within other groups of Azumels spread out across the galaxy? Being granted fleshed out, specific answers could do amazing thing’s for the Azumels’ established lore, popularity, and memorability overall.

Additional Notes: Originally, I didn’t think the Azumels were all that interesting, given the aforementioned comparisons to the Gran. However, I have since realized that they do have a lot more to offer when it comes to their appearance and lore, plus the ability to move each of their six eye stalks freely could prove incredibly useful in situational stories or settings. They’ve also consistently appeared more and more across other media, and have started to take on a real identity all their own, with what I think the pinnacle of their existence being when one of their own, Seezelslak (from the “Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge” VR experience), made his debut in the 2021 “Augmented Reality” Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! Ultimately, it’s up to you how you want to utilize them in your own work, fanmade or potentially otherwise if you’re an official creator who happened to stumble across this article. If you’re looking for a species with an extensive, pre-established history, both with the Republic and in the universe in general, then I’d maybe suggest sticking with the Gran. But if you want something unique and new to explore a little bit more freely, then definitely take the Azumels for a spin!
