Blubreen

Last Updated: 09/08/2025

Name: Blubreen

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human/Aquatic

Homeworld: Unknown (Ploo Sector)

Coloration: Varied

Biology: The Blubreen were an aquatic humanoid species seen occasionally within the Star Wars galaxy. They had a similar build, height, size, and configuration of appendages as most humanoids, but they also possessed a number of noticeable and unnoticeable differences. Blubreen could be seen in a wide variety of pigmentations including blue, green, red, purple, and potentially a number of others, while also sometimes even being multicolored based off of their parentage. Blubreen were completely hairless except for on their heads, sporting thin eyebrows and pitch black hair on the top of their heads.

Blubreen could exist comfortably both underwater and on land, able to breathe through their nose/nostrils found on their face or the five gill slits found on each side of their necks. They were proficient swimmers, with lean, muscular bodies that helped them cut through the water. They had both webbed hands and webbed feet, with fingers and toes that were slightly shorter than other humanoids. They had flat, slightly pointed ears, purple lips, and solid black eyes that allowed them to see well among the murky depths. Blubreen did have the capacity to speak Galactic Basic, and could be, at least occasionally, Force Sensitive.

Lore: Next to nothing is known about the Blubreen. They had been discovered by the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order by around the time of the Battle of Naboo, although it’s unclear whether or not they were actually affiliated with the Republic and/or held a seat on the Senate. They also had underwater cities on whatever homeworld they originated from in the Ploo Sector, and at least some wore an advanced form of wetsuit at all times. These wetsuits could be dark black with purple highlights, potentially allowing them to blend in with dark waters and offering a little bit of extra protection via padding.

Continuity: The Blubreen are exclusive to Star Wars Legends at the moment.

Unexplored: The Blubreen remain almost completely unexplored, whether potentially to garner intrigue, or more likely because they were never intended to be anything more than a one-off species. However, the following questions can help flesh them out whether within the context of Canon or Legends. So, when were the Blubreens first discovered, and by whom? Were they affiliated with the Galactic Republic, other group(s), or did they remain completely independent? What was the name of their homeworld, what was it like, and were most of the Blubreens still located there or have they long since spread out among the galaxy?

What sort of governmental structure did the Blubreen have? Did they have any major exports, distribute distinct galactic services, and what was the status of their overall economy? What was their society and culture like, and did they have any unique traditions or practices? Did they have any sort of strange or memorable species-wide religion? How did they view the rest of the galaxy, and what sort of philosophies and perspectives did they hold? What were their origins and history like, and what sort of species did they evolve from? And regarding potential biological details, could they breed with Humans or other near-Human species? How fast and deep could they swim? And just how many colors and combinations could they be?

Additional Notes: This is another one of those sorta “whatever” species to me. There’s not a lot unique here design or lore-wise at the moment, although there are at least a few glimmering details hidden under all that “meh.” The wide variety of colors that the species can be is a nice detail that adds a bit of design potential, and their possible proclivity for murky depths is fairly fascinating as we rarely see that outright. Still, if the Blubreen eventually make their triumphant Canon debut, they’re going to require a little tweaking to become a species worth remembering among the many other aquatic species already in existence. As it stands, they feel very much like a generic design that would feel at home in any number of comic-centric franchises.
