Hrakian

Name: Hrakian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human

Homeworld: Hraki

Coloration: Gold

Biology: The Hrakians were a pretty near-Human species found throughout the Star Wars galaxy. At first glance, they closely resembled Humans, with the same general height, build, and anatomy. Of course, they also had very distinctive golden skin, seemingly with an almost metallic sheen, and the irises of their eyes were the exact same color as their skin as well, with solid black pupils. They also had uniquely thick “strands” of what is apparently still hair on their head and face which, again, matches the exact color and tone of their skin (which could be cut despite their skin-like appearance). Hrakian lifespans were ever so slightly longer than that of the average Human, with most individuals living to be over 85 years old. They had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic, although they also had their own natural tongue also named “Hrakian.”

Lore: The humanoid Hrakians called the lush planet of Hraki their home. Unlike many planets in the Star Wars universe, Hraki had many diverse biomes including massive mountainous regions, grassy plains, and dense jungles. Being located within the Vorzyd Sector, and more specifically the Vorzyd Cluster, Hraki was a popular stop for spacers traversing trade routes that cut through the cluster of worlds, or for those who simply wanted to visit the nearby Vorzyd V, a popular galactic gambling hotspot. The planet was covered in a number of spaceports, and the Hrakians who lived there were fairly hospitable to offworlders and fond of the business that they brought with them.

Hraki, alongside the rest of the Vorzyd Cluster, was discovered by the Galactic Republic somewhere between 2000 to 1000 years prior to the rise of the Empire during a tumultuous era known as the “Draggulch Period.” However, unlike many other worlds, the many species and citizens of the cluster were not immediately made a part of the Republic. Instead, they formed their own independent but peaceful confederacy referred to as the “Commonality.” Designating the planet of Columex as their capital, species like the Hrakians and the Paiguns assumed places of authority. They also took advantage of their place among the uber-popular Perlemian Trade Route, and opened themselves up to commerce and an abundance of spacers, smugglers, and the likes.

For the next 500 years, the Hrakians and their fellow Commonality members would thrive, with business booming thanks to the many casinos popping up on Vorzyd V, and large investors Commenorians and the Greyshades pouring funds into the Vorzyd Cluster and their spaceports. The Greyshade family especially used the support they provided to gain political power among the Commonality, and sway their governmental system to accommodate their whims. This included pushing for the Commonality to forgo their independent ways and officially join the Galactic Republic.

Approximately 500 years prior to the fall of the Republic, the Commonality and all of its affiliated worlds, including the Hrakians, officially became members of the galactic organization, although the Hrakians were not granted a seat on the Senate. Instead, the entire Vorzyd Cluster was represented by a single Senator, always from the Greyshade family, although  they were at least given additional voting weight that was said to be able to single handedly sway the Senate. Still, many species like the Hrakians were not a fan of the new governmental setup although no outward expressions were made to rebel.

When the Galactic Republic collapsed, a state of emergency was declared among the Commonality, and the Greyshades made a deal with the Galactic Empire. This treaty ensured that the Commonality would not be invaded or usurped by force, and instead they would be allowed to continue operating with limited autonomy as long as they surrendered a portion of their gambling profits to the Empire. In addition, the Greyshades kept a seat on the Imperial Senate, albeit with much less weight, and they were given command over an Imperial-made space station known as “The Wheel” further on down the Perlemian Trade Route. Sadly, none of this benefitted the Hrakians, and they had come under Imperial jurisdiction without their consent.

Despite the radical changes that had been happening with the Commonality, the Hrakians were one of the species that suffered the least, and remained relatively successful while under the governance of both the Republic and Empire. Their spaceports continually remained open, their world remained peaceful, and there’s no concrete evidence that an Imperial occupation was ever initiated. Even then, many Hrakians had long left their homeworld and become spacers, even forming a large company known as “Hraki Intracluster Transport.” They served as the unsung backbone of the Commonality, and developed special freight ships that were recognized galaxy-wide.

Legends/Canon: The Hrakians are currently relegated to Star Wars Legends, although at the very least, the Vorzyd Sector and Vorzyd V are Canon so it’s not a stretch to think that they will be canonized sometime down the line. Pretty much everything above would easily translate into Canon, although there was the additional detail that the Vorzyd Cluster was completely conquered by the Yuuzhan Vong, something that would have to remain Legends-exclusive.

Unexplored: While there is a lot of lore above, it is more in regards to the “Commonality” than just the Hrakians themselves. And while what happens with the Vorzyd Cluster and their confederacy has implications on the Hraki and its inhabitants, there are still a lot of much more personal avenues that can be explored. Of course, if they are brought over to Canon, anything and everything is subject to change or erasure, so we’ll just keep this exploration in regards to their Legends lore and hope that some of it is canonized alongside the Hrakians themselves.

With all of that said, here are some potential questions to explore: When were the Hrakians first discovered by other species within the Vorzyd Cluster? How much power did they hold within the Commonality, both before and after the rise of the Greyshade family? How widespread was the Hraki Intracluster Transport company’s reach, and what were their custom transports like? Was Hraki ever officially occupied by Imperial forces? Did Hraki boast any other sort of business or exports outside of their spaceports? And what were their collective or individual views on everything that was happening around them? Were they in favor of all the attention they were receiving and the rise of the investors, or was it something that they inwardly or outwardly opposed?

Additional Notes: The Hrakians are definitely an interesting species that I could easily see appearing in something like The High Republic as either a Jedi or member of the Nihil. Really hoping we do see them canonized, and honestly does anyone else think that they’re kind of like a more realistic take on Simpsons character designs? No, just me? Ok…
