Bravaisian

Last Updated: 09/09/2025

Name: Bravaisian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Diminutive/Alternative/Beastite (Xenarthran)

Homeworld: Bravais

Coloration: Blue, Green, Gray, and/or Pink

Biology: Bravaisians were a diminutive species that had evolved from an anteater-like species. They stood approximately 1 to 1.2 meters in height, with spindly bodies and large heads. Their thick, leathery skin was usually blue or bluish-gray in coloration, fading into a pale pink color around their lips. They had short arms and small hands with four thin fingers each. The Bravaisians’ most notable features were their long snouts, possessing large lips at the end and housing an elongated, prehensile tongue. They would use this tongue interchangeably with their fingers to grasp objects and perform tasks, appearing to have no favored method of gripping things. Some Bravaisians also sported redish-orange hair sprouting from the upper-back portion of their head.

Bravaisians also had hyper sensitive eyes and were naturally nearly blind in daylight. Being a nocturnal species, they could see slightly better at night, but even then their small eyes did not support great eyesight under any circumstances. While they have no visible nasal or aural cavities, their other senses were apparently elevated, especially within dark environments. Due to the sensitivity and excruciating pain that light caused, Bravaisians were almost never seen without protective goggles. They also generally avoided bright locations, and had an overall aversion to heat as well. Their diet consisted primarily of insects, collected using their prehensile tongue and snout, and despite the shape of their mouths they were able to pronounce Basic.

Lore: The Bravaisians are still a relatively unexplored species, with only a little worldbuilding lore that, fortunately, does at least set them apart. Their homeworld of Bravais was very close to it’s nearby sun, and during the daytime hours the surface was ravaged by heat and blinding light. This meant that the Bravaisians slept in the planet’s caves and crevices during the day, and came out to conduct their business during the night. Many Braviasians also left their homeworld at the earliest possible date, meaning it was very common to see them on other, much more hospitable worlds. Unfortunately, however, it was a big adjustment to leave as it greatly messed with their natural sleep schedule.

Bravaisians had a great disdain for light, and often avoided sunny worlds or even highly illuminated buildings. This being said, they found comfort in shady areas or even darkened bars or cantinas, locations like Maz Kanata’s castle being an especially favored sanctuary for the species. It was even a common occurrence for Bravaisians to have their eyes surgically removed, or much less often, they may have even plucked out their own eyes. Considering the temporary pain much more favorable than the constant annoyance of light, and completely capable of operating even when blind.

As far as we know, the Bravaisians were citizens of the Republic, and their planet was located within Republic space, although we don’t know where in the galaxy it is located or when this first became official. The species was commonly seen among the galaxy during the High Republic era, with at least one being a member of the Jedi Order at the time. Almost all of their other appearances have currently been relegated to the Cold War era and beyond, with few to no appearances during the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War years so far. However, based off of everything else we know, this is simply due to the fact that they are relatively new to the Star Wars franchise and will being to make more frequent appearances in the near future.

Legends/Canon: As mentioned directly above, Bravaisians are exclusive to the current Star Wars Canon.

Unexplored: With a unique backstory/homeworld, the Bravaisians are ripe for exploration, and there are definitely some major questions that require answering. When were the Bravaisians first discovered, and who decided to travel to Bravais for what reason? Are there any worlds or locations, such as Umbara or Maz’s Castle, that they are more partial to given their sensitivities? Were they ever drawn into any major conflicts, and did Bravais offer any sort of advantage (resources, location on a trade route, Force Vergence, etc.) that would warrant war reaching its surface?

It would also be nice to learn more about their biology. How much vision do they actually possess? What is the extent of their diet, can they process other foods, and what sort of insects call Bravais home? How would they explain their aversion to and the pain caused by light? Is it difficult to find surgeons who would be willing to remove eyes, or is it a common occurrence in the galaxy? We’ve seen one as a Jedi, but did they have an average Midi-chlorian count or was it relatively high or low? Would that make the Bravaisian Jedi Bibs a rare occurrence, or just one of many? There are many things to explore further, and I definitely see them receiving more lore in the future of The High Republic.

Additional Notes: Honestly, I really like this species design. They do have quite a few similarities to the Kubaz (anteater-like, snout, insect-diet, goggles, subterranean lives due to intense sun-related cataclysm) but their design does also set them apart enough in my opinion. And I would really like to see more of them, especially their homeworld, if the chance ever arises!
