Kotabi

Last Updated: 11/13/2023

Name: Kotabi

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human

Homeworld: Kotab

Coloration: White and Gray

Biology: The Kotabi are a little-known, fairly near-Human species. They had the same general height and build as the average Human, as well as much of the same anatomy. They were generally thin, with pale white pigmentation and completely hairless bodies. Their black pupils were much beadier than most humanoid species, and their eyes were surrounded by naturally darkend skin, making them look almost perpetually tired. From what we’ve seen so far, it is very possible that the Kotabi are naturally genderless. Details regarding Kotabi reproduction, life cycles, and life spans have not yet been revealed. This species also has the capacity to pronounce Galactic Basic, albeit with strange speaking mannerisms.

Lore: Little is known of the Kotabi as of yet, and they are still being fleshed out in media from the ongoing High Republic media event/era. Due to their seemingly genderless nature, they refrain from utilizing pronouns in their everyday speech, instead always referring to each other or even themselves almost exclusively by name. This, along with other unique speech quirks, made their manner of speaking Basic very irregular by galactic standards. This species and their homeworld were known by the Galactic Republic as early as the High Republic era, although Kotabi were rarely seen among the greater galaxy. The majority of known instances are currently also Jedi, although there is not enough information to extrapolate any additional species data from that as of yet, including the nature of their baseline m-count.

Legends/Canon: The Kotabi and their homeworld are currently exclusive to Star Wars Canon, being one of the poster species for early media from The High Republic multimedia event.

Unexplored: There’s a lot left open with the Kotabi, given their relatively new and sparse appearances. What was their homeworld like, and did it have any unique or memorable bits of history? When were the Kotabi first discovered by the outside galaxy, and were they an official part of the Galactic Republic and its Senate? Were the Kotabi an isolationist species, or had they expanded out among and integrated into the rest of the galaxy? And what were the Kotabi up to during eras following the High Republic? Were they roped into the Clone Wars, were they oppressed during the Galactic Civil War, and were they made a part of the New Republic prior to the events of the Cold War? Exploring these ideas, as well as just general bits of lore or identity, can go a long way in setting this species apart from other pale near-Humans

Additional Notes: While I can’t say this species’ design is unique (I totally thought they were Umbarans for quite a while after their initial reveal), there is just enough here to set them apart from some of the more basic near-Human species. I’m also curious as to whether the whole “Bond-Twins” concept surrounding the Kotabi Jedi twins Ceret and Terec is a universal concept, or something exclusive to the Kotabi species. Hopefully we’ll get answers soon!
