Graduation Day (1/6)

An alarm blares.

Eyes flutter open.

Muscles tense.

Synapses fire.

Confusion sets in.

Then panic.

The blinds shoot up.

Sunlight pours in.

Sheets hit the floor.

A uniform is fastened.

Long black hair is bound.

Shoes slip on.

A door swings open.

Then a slam.

Hastened footsteps ring out.

Echoes bounce off empty halls.

There’s a leap down the stairs.

A graceful landing.

A sprint towards the doors.

And suddenly fresh air.

Chilly wind whips across the courtyard.

A deep breath.

Then a glance at a watchtower.

Sigh of half relief.

A large insect buzzes past.

A flock circles quietly overhead.

The sun peeks through the clouds.

Rays illuminate spots on an overcast field.

Imposing walls bear down on all sides.

A familiar commotion in the distance.

Figures standing in formation.

Punches thrown in sync.

Kicks extended in unison.

Sweat peppers the turf.

Grunts slip past pursed lips.

Eyes focused on invisible enemies.

The rhythmic shouting of commands.

Artificial grass crunches under foot.

The gap begins to close.

And then a voice pierces the morning air.

Sharp jaw clenches.

Eyes roll.

Then a slight exhale of frustration.

“You’re late…”
