Name: Chalhuddan
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Aquatic
Homeworld: Chal Hudda
Coloration: Green, Blue, and/or Tan
Biology: The Chalhuddans were an amphibious, frog-like race that were seldom encountered within the Star Wars galaxy. They were round and squad, with smooth, mucus-coated skin and pudgy features. They were bipedal, although they still had many frog features like webbed hands and feet, as well as a very frog-like head. Most of their head, back, and arms were varying shades of green, while their chin down to their underbelly was light tan in coloration. They also sported varying darker patterns all across the green portion of their bodies.
Chalhuddans had no true neck, instead possessing a massive, lumpy throat that extended down to their chests. Much like other frogs, they had the ability to inflate this stretchy membrane with air. They had flat, nearly lipless mouths and pointed noses, as well as eyes with large, yellow irises, and pupils that either took on the shape of a sideways oval or sometimes even a “crosshair” design with lines extending in four directions from said oval pupils. They had two horn-like protrusions jutting up and out from above their eyes. On the tops of their heads, they often either had a cluster of small spines or long, black hair, a trait uncommon among similar species.
Some of these visual distinctions may have been a result of a Chalhuddan’s current “gender,” of which they had five. These five genders were very distinct between members of their kind, but almost indistinguishable by non-Chalhuddans. Their gender system (and details regarding reproduction) were considered to be very complex, and Chalhuddans were actually a part of a unique cycle. Every so often, after a currently undetermined period of time, they would go through a form of metamorphosis and change into one of the other four genders. They seemed to have some indication of what they would become next, but the transformations were, in fact, random and not predetermined or controllable.
Chalhuddans could vocalize Galactic Basic Standard, although it was not incredibly natural to them and they most definitely had their own unknown language as well. Many of the words they used, including the titles of their genders, were completely unpronounceable by most other species. It is believed that their throat sacs also assisted with their speech and annunciation, although it’s exact purpose was never specified. They also seem to have an elongated, frog-like tongue, although they have currently never showed them off or demonstrated any sort of special skills with them. We also have confirmation that they could be Force Sensitive.
Lore: So most of what we know about the Chalhuddans revolves around their “gender system.” Many cultural events were directly rooted in or influenced by the gender shifting process, and they placed great importance on identity and titles. They had a complex pronoun system, which only branched the more genders an individual Chalhuddan went through. This species despised being misgendered and saw it as an affront to their culture, but because non-Chalhuddans couldn’t pronounce any of their pronouns, they asked other species to simply refer to them by their names or as broad a pronoun as possible.
The Chalhuddans acknowledged that they were different than most of the galaxy because of how they approached certain concepts, and because they were easily offended, they were often antagonistic towards offworlders who they called “Dry Ones” and actively chose to rarely interact with them. This led to them avoiding any sort of allyship with galactic factions like the Galactic Republic or Confederacy of Independent Systems. Fortunately, Chal Hudda offered no real evident monetary, political, or strategic advantage to any galactic governments so they were able to remain secluded and, for the most part, go unnoticed (although at least one member of the species joined the Jedi Order).
That was, at least, until the later days of the Galactic Civil War when the Chalhuddans were threatened by an epidemic of which they had no cure. The Rebel Alliance had access to a cure and attempted to reach out to the Chalhuddans so that they could provide humanitarian services. After a long fought discourse between Princess Leia Organa and the Chalhuddan leader Occo Quentto, who assumed the Rebellion were looking down on their people and only offering to assist out of pity, Leia finally proved that they really were just seeking to help the galaxy and the Chalhuddans were simply a part of it.
Vaccines were eventually delivered to the Chalhuddans, and out of an obligatory sense of gratitude, the two groups formed a shaky alliance. At a later point, the Chalhuddans would actually assist Leia and the Rebellion by granting them passage and cover before they could be discovered by the Galactic Empire, officially taking a side in the conflict. While we don’t know whether any Chalhuddans really threw in with the Rebellion and became combatants and informants, a mutual relationship did remain with Leia promising them another favor late on down the line.
Continuity: The Chalhuddans are exclusive to the current Star Wars Canon.
Unexplored: Some of the biggest questions I have about the Chalhuddans revolve around their future in-continuity. Did they ever fully side with the Rebellion and begin fighting back against the Empire? Did they ever join the New Republic and overcome their particular disposition towards the “Dry Ones?” Did the rest of the galaxy actually view them with disdain or disgust, or was that just what the Chalhuddans assumed based off of misunderstandings? What did they think of the fall of the New Republic and rise of the First Order? And did any Chalhuddans ever leave their homeworld and just become an average galactic citizen, or was that not an option for them due to their life cycles and complex culture? Exploring the answers to these questions, along with our usual list of generic worldbuilding traits, will prove most beneficial in further fleshing this species out.
Additional Notes: I always enjoy species that tackle unique concepts as a part of their core identity, and the Chalhuddans remind me a bit of the X’Ting from Star Wars Legends. Seeing the galaxy from their perspective would be a very fascinating to experience, but given their isolationist attitude, I also don’t know that there are many unique stories to tell with them at the moment. We’ll have to wait and see what they’re up to post-Empire before we can really gauge how galactic their story can truly become!
