Name: Kulless
Humanoid: No
Classification: Alternative
Homeworld: Gerres Gule
Coloration: Pink, Tan, & Brown
Biology: The Kulless were a squat, somewhat obscure species found within the Star Wars galaxy who were known for their asymmetrical appearances. They appeared diminutive, although their large, hunched backs actually left them standing between 1.4 – 1.7 meters in height. They were a rather heavy species, with naturally rotund frames and thick tails. They had small, four-toed feet with toenails of varying size. Their hands were much larger, almost disproportionately so compared to their pencil thin arms, with four large fingers each. Their brown/pink skin was mottled, wrinkled, and covered in warts.
Their hunched backs gave way to a drooping, almost haunting face. They had deep eye sockets with solid black eyes. They had two large, exposed nostrils, and a low hanging mouth with snaggled teeth. Overall, they had very disproportionate features with each Kulless looking noticeably different from their peers. They were also a very slow moving species, although they appeared to be somewhat strong with especially intense grip strength. Their lifespan is unknown, as are details regarding reproduction, although they are believed to be able to speak Galactic Basic.
Lore: We know next to nothing about the Kulless, as they primarily existed as a one-off species for a podracing video game. What we do know is that they originated from the planet Gerres Gule, and evolved sentience relatively recently in the grand scheme of the galaxy. Their strange appearances were acknowledged by many individuals in-universe. And podracing may have been popular or influential among their species. They were also found within the Mid Rim, in a seemingly well known section known as the “Dragonflower Nebula.”
Legends/Canon: The Kulless are currently only exclusive to Star Wars Legends.
Unexplored: There’s still a lot left unexplored about the Kulless, including almost any information regarding Gerres Gule. What is the planet like, what sort of landscape and environment does it possess, and what sort of fauna, flora, or other sentient species can be found there. What is Kulless society like, and what sort of civilization or cities do they have? Do they have a thriving economy, and what sort of exports do they produce? Do they have any sort of unique governmental structure(s), were they allied with any galactic factions or governments, or were they disconnected and too primitive to be involved with organized politics?
What did young Kulless, or even Kulless women look like? Did they possess any sort of special anatomical or biological traits? Did they have any sort of rivalries or relationships with other species? Were they oppressed for their physical appearance similar to other species like the Artiodac? What sort of unique traditions or cultural practices did they have that set them apart from other sentient races? Did they have their own language or way of communicating? Did podracing actually have an impact on the Kulless, and if so, did Gerres Gule have a racing circuit and how many Kulless actually became drivers? Finally, if they do make the jump to Canon, what changes would be made to their physical appearance, if any?
Additional Notes: Will the Kulless be Canonized anytime soon? I doubt it. Would anyone really care? Probably not. But are they exactly the type of obscure Legends aliens that keep making their way into the High Republic? Honestly, yes! Because of this, it may be worth it to remember this one, just in case they are referenced in a piece of High Republic media in the near future. And if they do, I will definitely come back and update this article. (Also, fun fact, the podracing game they made their debut in was “Star Wars: Racer Revenge,” with the Kulless racer Shrivel Braittrand being named after Travis Hilterbrand, the games lead designer!)
